The switch however can be overwhelming and I no longer have the time to spend a long weekend doing that shit when I want to simply install an IDE and clone my git as sun as possible.

>>109879400If you really want a ready to go experience then Ubuntu is your easiest choice. Most Distros are secure by default and Ubuntu is no exception. Many people don't like or recommend Ubuntu for cultist reasons but none of them disprove Ubuntu as a really good OS that works for the user and not vice versa.

For somebody who wants a not riced desktop but also some gaming capability, how does Fedora fare these days? I'm currently on Mint on my laptop and it works fine but I want to switch back to Gnome DE and I heard Fedora has better native support for it

You can configure distros that coe with apparmor (like Debian and Ubuntu) to be relatively secure, but you'll have to write most of the rules yourself.
