They want to develop once and not spending their effor porting shit to newer gtk. Speaking of wayland. There is a churn of new subststems in linux and every year we have new init/sound system/display server/bus/etc. This should also go away. Also debugger. Also, people spoke about this like hundred of times. There is also alternative: containers route. sandboxing/flatpacks/etc. But it's shit way and still require to stabilize/support some apis for long time.

Linux is already perfected by Devuan.Best distro (Debian), but with no systemd. As good as it gets. GNU/Linux has been solved. Nobody needs another distro.
