3080 12GB cards are usually 320~350W power draw cards, unless you got the higher end Strix or similar model.
Assuming that pigtail cable is 18 AWG instead of the safer 16, a single cable is specced to safely supply just over 25A (+290W).
The cable shouldn't have melted if you used at least two separate ones to connect to the 3080 (two separate + 1 of the pigtail).
You either didn't fully insert the 8pin cable in the PSU end, or that specific 8pin PSU connector is faulty (avoid re-using that receptacle).

I did insert it all the way, but clearly I didn't rent a coloscopy device to ensure it was fully seated in place brother. I trusted the click, and it certainly was clicked in because it was a motherfucker to pull out. I accept that terminal on the psu is fucked forever, so hence my use of the last remaining port and a dual pcie cable.

Frame gen has actual value, nvidia does it better.
Path tracing and ray reconstruction are valuable when you can run a game with it, which isnt often.
Nvidia features like hdr filter for games, hdr filter for youtube videos is super useful.

AMD has such shit feature support basically everyone needs to install optiscaler and thats a major downside. Nvidia is the defaul, all publishers support nvidia. Buying nvidia gets you the best and smoothest experience with minimal tinkering.

The linked article states the connector there is only rated for 150w so if anon has a GPU with three connector that draws more than 300w he is past corsairs spec if the pigtail is used with two cables. evga was previously mentioned by him so I'd assume it's an eggs 3080 but not what specific model as it could be the one that has a max of 320w or the ultra that goes up to 400w.

Look at this ESL falling apart. The 5090 ships with a 4x 8pin to 12+2 power cable adapter, that means a minimum of 4x 150W = 600W power supply requirement.
Two 18 AWG rated 6+2 pin pigtail cables fail to meet that power requirement (288 * 2).
No one ever said it's safe to use two pigtail cables to power a 5090. It's just your desperate extrapolation to try and win an argument in /pcbg/.

What matters in this discussion is it's electrically safe to to use cable configuration in pic for a sub 375W video card if the cables are at least AWG 18 rated.

I'm still running a Ryzen 5 3600. Should I consider upgrading? I can't see it failing me anytime soon, but I'm not sure if it's reasonable to upgrade now or if I'm just falling for the AI fearmongering. I would just upgrade to the 7900x, since it's the budget option around where I live.

They likely upgraded the pigtail cables to the 16 AWG rated ones vs. the 18 AWG cable noted where the older article's math was based on (340W vs 288W).

The 288W limit is actually based on the Molex connector rating on the modular side minus one amp on each pin.

Current handling with any given wire gauge is based on length. 16 AWG is better but 18 won't cause connector melting as the rating from Molex stands by their rating even with 18 awg on typical runs.

Like anything you don't want to be right up the limit of the connector. Even Corsairs stated 288w has margin against manufacturing variance. The Molex rating of 9 amps per pin assumes absolutely perfect crimping with Molex's own tools on new, clean pins with little cycle counts.

Corsair however is rating 8 amps per pin because not every mass manufactured item is perfect. The PCIe spec even acknowledges this and assumes an even less confident rating with 4 amps per pin for an 8 pin

I'm not but they cannot test EVERY cable to catch the few defects. Esapiclly in CURRENT handling/temperature rise. You're not getting a full characterization and test report with every cable. At best it's getting put in a jig with a green or red light that at least tells them it's pinned correctly, not whether a cable can actually handle its rated amps continuously.
Batch testing also only identifies systematic production problems.

It only all works because 99.9% of cables/units will be fine with a basic check, but it's impractical at consumer scale and price to thoroughly test every unit that basically guarantees reliability.

Defects exist and it's why the original ATX spec derates the fuck out of the Molex connectors that are based on it. The melting connectors that are being witnessed more often today with 8 pins (and 12pins) is a side effect of the subtle defects that are just the reality of consumer products. Everyone likes to think they are being sold the best quality in the world because your buying "enthusiast" products but that's not reality.

Avoid Kryonaut, this isn't designed to minimize pump out in the long run.
Kryosheet can be tricky to apply, but you will never need to worry about maintaining GPU TIM if you set it up correctly.
It requires strict screw torque tolerances when reattaching the cooler, but don't over torque the screws.

PTM is probably good enough for most people (less pump out than paste, easier to apply than Kryosheet). There are a lot of counterfeit PTMs.
MX-7 would be the budget choice, will need replacing in 6~8 years.

I want to make a desktop after only having laptops for years.
Assuming I go amd (nothing but problems with nvidia so far) and want something high but not too high-end (let's say I want to run the oblivion remaster without stuttering in 1080p 60fps, 120fps if I'm greedy because that's what my current screen handles), how fucked am I regarding the prices hikes?

My use case is playing with openGL, light video editing, computer music, gaymes and browsing 4chinz. Probably using arch (btw) or arch-based OS.

What would be the approximate price for something like that? Not asking for a build per se, just a ballpark estimation.

If you only care about playing 1080p at a lower graphic settings just buy used parts. Buy a 1080TI or something, a 5800x3d and call it a day
