Element is so fucking bad that I'm unironically considering learning the skills needed to replace it.I thought that I could just give it some years and it would improve but I think it actually got worse over time. They introduced new bugs that have gone unfixed for years. Despite being the same product and codebase the mobile and desktop varients have different featuresets, and redundant ones at that. Why are there at least 4 different audio players in the same client each with different features. You can change playback speed on mobile but not on desktop. Voice messages have a spectrogram but audio files (even with the same codec+container) don't. And other bullshittery. Why are there 3 different ways to have a video call in the same client, again - each of which has different features that don't always overlap. So instead of just integrating the features into 1 of them you have to jump between 2 different ones for 2 different reason in the same client. What is this clown shit. Oh my fucking god.And you go to the issue tracker and it's all trans furries implementing features like spoiler text so they can considerately spoiler text related to self harm and other gay shit besides fixing fundamental problems. Like the fact starting the client can reprocess all of your read recipts. As in all of them. As in starting my chat client costs me 20+GB of RAM and 2 minutes to start because it's walking my entire history, which it needs because scrolling is broken and send me flying to a message I posted 2 years ago while the CPU spins at 100%.And so on, and so on. Jesus fucking Christ. And THIS is the best of the worst right now. That's our best option because nobody wants to use the older existing things that are already established and already worked. Like XMPP or anything else.Sending text messages to another person considered an impossible technical challenge in 2026.

>>109921502Why did everyone stop using stuff like pidgin? it just worked. I guess AIM and Yahoo! Messenger dying off kinda killed it huh.
>>109921831I think it's the closed nature.MSN Messenger (and custom hacks/mods of it) is my personal favorite. It may as well be perfect. Maybe cosmetically it could be changed but the core is there. It does everything I need and in a reasonable amount of resources/responsiveness.Doesn't matter though because they shut down the service and the software is centralized+proprietary. Now there are open implementations of reverse engineered protocols, etc.But the problem with this kind of software in general, is that you aren't the only one that matters. It doesn't matter if I can use that if my friends don't.There's fragmentation that splinters out as services die or change and users continue to feel the burn each time it happens to them until they decide to not even jump ship to another service since they know it will happen again.Personal case in point, I liked Google's desktop chat client. Can't use it, dead service.I really liked this Japanese program I can't remember the name of that was like Nintendo's swapnote but it was much older. Worked great. Dead.On the other side, the open stuff tends to not be great. At least in my experience with XMPP.The proprietary software + extensions just tend to be better, and unfortunately not copied despite the fact you really could. This is true even for Matrix. It may or may not be the best protocol. But it's not the worst thing ever.Yet experiencing it is horrible because all the software is bad and/or has deviations in the comparability or even handling of extensions / message types. My experience with Pidgin and prior to that I used Trillian. Both were positive. But I strongly remember the frustration of Pidging technically supporting features but not being handled well or fully. Pretty much every feature at the time was like 25% of what it needed to be. But this was decades ago, so the situation may have changed.
>>109922027>My experience with Pidgin and prior to that I used Trillian. Both were positive. But I strongly remember the frustration of Pidging technically supporting features but not being handled well or fully.I remember this too, and Trillian. Best:Discord, not even lying. Just works. That's how it goes. Most freedom:XMPP. There's a 'foundation' but it's all by consensus and it's an open protocol anyone can develop for, but no group-chat or screensharing, and the devs don't really consider it a priority, so don't keep your hopes up.Somewhere in between:Matrix, VC money and could become just as corpo as Discord one day... but not for now.I don't need Federaton:Jitsi, Fluxer, Stoat. You have more options if it's just 'you and the boys'.Pointless Tier:Delta - Just XMPP but worse, uses relays, easier for normies, tho.SimpleX - Just XMPP but worseBriar - Just XMPP but worseWire - Just XMP but worseTimeless Tier:IRC - just worksIf I didn't mention it, it isn't worth mentioning.

Make it an option if you want to include both, then the user can select. There's no reason for them to be arbitrarily fragmented in terms of features.Things like the graph seem to only benefit both voice and music since it widens the seek bar and gives context to the position of audio. I don't see a downside. Likewise with adding the features from mobile like playback speed. Why not? Even if you bury it in the context menu or somewhere else, what's the harm in allowing music to be played back at 2x like voice can, why is that only a voice option on mobile and not desktop anyway.
