The only even slightly useful suggestion made was the idea of using the hot water for showers but that's because it recycles the actually scarce resource, energy, the same one you want to burn for no gain.
>>109915527
It benefits people who need fresh water where none is available, it has nothing to do with datacenters. Even if you want to build one in a desert where you have access to saltwater you can just cool it with that saltwater.

Absolutely incoherent.
>>109915567
That's why you use the near infinite supply of fucking fresh water and just don't build in a desert. If you want to for some braindead reason then using salt water is still cheaper than desalination, even when you have an excess of the cheapest energy source, hydropower.. which comes from fresh water falling from the sky.
>>
>>109915581
isn't that a good thing?

>>
>>109915594
>If you want to for some braindead reason then using salt water is still cheaper than desalination
No it isn't because desalination is well trod ground, all it takes is energy. In contrast reworking the whole system to work with saltwater needs expensive engineering hours and there's just no reason to bother when the majority of the world doesn't need to cool with saltwater. Data centers in ME use desalinated water.

Your pic is the exact reason they introduced banked resets. Surprise early resets can make you lose usage while also fucking with any schedules you may have planned. People were rightfully complaining about this so they came up with banked resets as the solution.
>>
>>109915588
I'm extremely familiar and you're not. I live in salt water spray, with a metal roof in a fishing town with boats made of metal with engines cooled by sea water. I can also directly observe the small hills condensing the evaporated sea water and follow the infinitely flowing streams to the hydropower stations that power the town.

did they actually wait until the mathematically least efficient time for the userbase to reset instead of just giving everyone a banked reset
>>
>>109915656
>because there is no other source
The point is the datacenters get subsidized desalinated tapwater so that's the cheapest option from their perspective but it's only cheap because it's subsidized, someone else is paying for it.
>they have a shitton of oil
A limited supply they could be using instead to build something long term like nuclear or even regreening using among other things strategically placed artificial hills that condense moisture from the sea air.

this 100% opus 5.5 mogs so hard and every time i tried astra its code is shit, it doesnt really do much and tunnel visions so hard it cant fix anything and needs constant babysitting

hope? it only proves what we've been saying that they're desperate and currently codex is bad value

personally i'm not falling for it again, 5.5 was awful, 5.6/6.0 are unusable and nowhere near opus 5 level either
>>
>>109916013
i don't even think astra is bad, i just don't think it's opus. astra was undeniably state of the art like a week ago until we got opus 5.5, it was catching things fable wasn't. except now opus 5.5 is catching things astra and fable weren't while also producing plainly beautiful products and incredibly efficiently.
i don't like the consolewarring that happens here. i do like vibecoding though and i'm excited to keep making things with opus.

Calibre has a lot more features, but quite a few of them are poorly executed, it's not cross-platform, and the UI is just awful. Yes, I know you can use themes, but they are not a remedy to everything. IMO, Readest seems to be a much better modern alternative than Calibre, but I haven't used it much.

>Cerebras inference
that'd be crazy. people don't really get where the frontier actually is now.

think of this:
>gpt-6 sol was about 7 times faster than astra (as per a twitter thread showing astra produced 25k tokens in 19 minutes while sol did 29k tokens in 3).
>the super ultra mega fast mode with the cerebras chips can run inference on gpt-5.6 14 times faster.
>usually half the tokens you spend are due to tool calls. they came up with jev which can handle most of those 200 times faster with basically no cost.
if you are following along you have 7x (sol optimizations) 14x (cerebras inference) 2x (jev implementation). that is 7x14x2 which is 196 times faster!!! than how we were currently doing things before!!!

it's just that those fast inference chips have not been rolled out in large scale yet and it's more of a premium thing, but soon it won't be. people were scared of ai before imagine how much more they will be when they realize that you can current sota ai capabilities 196x faster.

Vaguely on the topic, but does anyone know of good solutions for generating bird sounds with AI? Basically, I want to provide a species name, duration (e.g. 5 min) and get an audio recording of its calls. I've tried Stable Audio 3 (Medium and Small-SFX) for text-to-audio generation, including LoRA fine-tuning, but most of the results are horrible and sound nothing like birds. I also tried ECOGEN, which generates synthetic mel spectrograms classifier training. I tried to vibecode a way to reconstruct audio from those, but again, the results were just awful. It doesn't help that I know next to nothing about audio.

>>109916717
it's a tool, and it improves the speed and quality tenfold if you take the time to use it properly
if you're a 1x swe like me you become at least 10x and work half an hour a day instead of 8, complete projects that would take you at least a week in half a day, and get to shitpost on reddit/x/4chan or do your own projects

it's like managing other programmers, telling them what to do, fix their misunderstandings, but they're fucking ai agents instead of humans

I have a subordinate IT guy at my job who was doing the more menial tasks (which would take even me some hours if I were to do them myself - like exporting custom reports from the erp system and shit like that for the administration). think about deepseek. how are they able to provide a 1.6T model for the prices they do? because they done a bunch of optimizations and shit. now do you think the same optimizations are not being used by oai and anthropic too? of course they are they are just not telling you. running these last models are just as expensive as running deepseek or a little bit more if you scale for bigger sizes.

i think astra is probably still a bit smarter on average than opus 5.5 but not by too much
openai need to rush out bel and the bel distils within ~2 months and they need to have a bel successor mostly trained by then too

maybe, but then opus-5.5 uses ~40% less tokens than gpt-5.6-sol for coding. so is cheaper despite the same prices per token.

NEWFAG here

I downloaded cursor using the default grok 4.6. I plugged in zelda links awakening disassembly and asked it to make one change. It thought for 10 minutes and I ran out of usage.

I just wanted to test this out for a bit before I decided to buy the subscription. Why does it give you basically nothing?

Also how much more usage do you get when you pay $20 a month? Could I make major changes to that project and make a cool mod?

cursor doesn't even matter. you don't even have to understand it because it's not in the running for actually viable models. pursue a refund from cursor if you got it literally today. subscribe to claude claude.ai and use claude code. opus 5.5 is the best model on the planet, even at medium and high settings

Why not cursor with claude LLM?
>>
>>109917668

> Grok 4.6
just stop. Go with Claude Code and Opus 5.5 high, you will get a lot of usage out of that
>>
>>109917737
because 1) anthropic bans you for using their model with other harnesses if you're doing it via their subscription (api is okay) 2) claude models are trained to use claude code. if you use claude with a non claude code harness, you're gimping it. it's not performing at it's fullest potential
>>
>>109917668
forget cursor. for programming claude is the best atm. $20 is probably enough to test how it works for you but you probably need the max plan for heavier changes.

>>109917756
>>109917747
>>109917743

>>
So how long until devs get replaced?
2 weeks? 2 months? 2 years?
>>
>>109917737
for claude models the claude subscription is more generous than what you would get from cursor. at least that is how it used to be. I have ditched cursor long ago so I don't if anything changed.
>>
>>109917764
uh no? there are only two serious companies: anthropic and openai. and in that instance yes, i will let my claude subscription expire and renew on codex.
>>
>>109917764
people usually jump ship between OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Anthropic (Claude), they're SoTA.

Claude is winning right now with Opus 5.5, and OpenAI should not come up with something better because they released ChatGPT Sol 6 the same day Opus 5.5 got released, so expect a few months of Claude supremacy.

Eventually you will have both plans
>>
>>109917764
>Do you guys just keep jumping ship to a new everything every month?
Kinda yes because things move so fast. If you can afford, you don't to have to stick to just one but experiment with different options.

You use your normal IDE or editor. Claude code runs on the CLI, and codex runs as its own app too. Most of them work like that, you don’t install IDEs. ZCode, opencode, agy, etc. they are harnesses/apps for agents. Cursor is the odd one out because it embeds the agents into an editor

I would teach them the principles of good code and some very basic programming and data structures. Then I would have them build progressively larger independent projects to get practice making architectural decisions. I would quiz them on their architectural choices for each project and expect them to be able to explain why they chose library/framework x and not y. IMO that's the place where humans still add value, AI without guidance will make every decision and write every piece of code in a very overly complex yet conservative way, but that's not the best way to implement most features.
