>Paradoxically, while the gin reduced ginning labor requirements, it amplified demand for field labor in planting, tending, and harvesting, driving the enslaved population in the South from roughly 700,000 in 1790 to 4 million by 1860 as planters expanded cultivation to meet surging global textile mill needs.[2][7] Whitney's patent faced widespread infringement, yielding him little profit despite legal battles, and highlighted early challenges in American intellectual property enforcement amid rapid industrialization.

C is best language ever with no flaws, you only have to write a whole new library from scratch to merely concatenate two strings or get a length of a string in less than O(n^2) time but go ahead, do better smartypants.

alternatively you dont know anything about programming
in either case i think you should get sterilized and be made to do menial work, for the good of society
>>
>>109921015
it's not very hard and you only need to do it once. if your program's performance is dependent on how fast your string handling is you would write a lot of string operation functions yourself anyway, regardless of what type of a string it is. string handling in C is genuinely a nocoder issue, same as whining about headers. there are real issues with C but I'm not going to do your work for you

MAIDS is almost fully memory safe now. I appreciate more now why Rust has memory safety, and why so many people want to rewrite things in Linux with it. Making MAIDS memory safe exposed a lot of MAIDS OS bugs and made them easier to fix, and finishing memory safety will probably do this more. I had previously thought memory safety in Rust is just make an unsafe block and any time you need to do anything complex or interesting, code ends up in the unsafe block, and so unsafe block basically becomes a special kind of comment that says "If we have memory bugs, they exist here". I thought it was fake and used to call it "safety theater". Now I understand there is much more compile time and runtime checking than this and that the safety guarantee is actually much stronger than just labeling potentially unsafe code as unsafe, to make it easier to find.

I think I just became a supporter of Rust in the Linux kernel as an eventual full replacement for C.

Unfortunately, I have use cases for syslangs and C is one of the most accessible. Can you suggest any other syslangs? I could use Rust.
>>
>>109923908
I like js because it's hosted and doesn't pretend to be anything special. Python gets ridiculously messy because it sort of plays both ends of the spectrum. async and await just work in js because of this, unlike python. Plus the js committee usually doesn't propose broken shit and fix it later, kind of like Python's fstrings being incapable of nested, same quoted, contrnt, while js (tagged) templates just worked day one. Helps that functions and closures are first class too so you don't need to be an oojeet.
>>

>>109923940
depends on your skills, disposition, and what is it that you will be doing
are you gonna build an os, or are you just interfacing with it?

if its the former and youre scatterbrained, i think its better if you go with rust
if scatterbrained and youre just interfacing with the os, but your project is small, id say go with c

if youre very disciplined, have a good notion of interfacing, and are quite experienced, then you go with c
c works best when you have a well furnished codebase to build from and automations to set up your projects

its a demanding language when taken seriously, but once you check all the boxes, its really good

theres also other alternatives- theres go, theres also c++, theres nim, zig, etc
maybe thats what you need? something between rust and c?
otherwise yeah, if you want to build a big project in c, you really have to keep your ducks in a row, because spaghettified c is unmaintainable

You shouldn't do this because what happens in practice is you leave performance on the table trying to huff it out like survivor man with your weak language.
People have been saying a compiler can write better assembly than you can, which holds true in many cases. The same can be said about writing your own hashmap in C or just using one of the better ones implemented in C++ or Rust. Very very unlikely you'll outperform hashbrown, swisstable or Facebook's F14 Map. Keep in mind hashdos is a real threat to any exposed to inputs as well.

words on a spec don’t matter. what’s important is the real world implementation that actually does the thing and compiler maintainers are too responsible to adhere to the standard and break existing code just because technically it is UB. regardless of what standard you're dealing with, a standard sets the baseline specification, not the ceiling
other specifications, whether they be formalized standards or merely informal agreements (or even unspoken but universalized conventions established through long term cultural dominance) are more than free to further specify things that have been left undefined or implementation defined like the Sys-V and Itanium ABIs do, or in the case of specifications like Vulkan does with the C standard, use it for baseline definitions and concepts and expand upon it
this notion that you have to adhere solely to the subset of C that is valid under the ISO standard is weird, extremely limiting, and bizarre
that subset is merely the subset ISO guarantees predictable behavior for

As a C programmer, you're retarded. The compiler can, and absolutely does, optimise around the assumption that signed overflow does not happen.

>>
>>109926142
there are expectations everyone has been operating under for decades. In the same way a language cannot break backwards compatibility without pissing everyone off (unless it eternally stays pre-1.0), a compiler programmer isn't going to squeeze out some minuscule optimization at the expense of breaking decades worth of existing code even if the code is relying on UB where he technically has license to do so. and that unspoken social contract is as real as, if not more real than the actual standard
>>
>>109926592
Yeah bro gonna tell the cpython, posgtres, linux devs that.
>>
>>109926613
i hope they have a good reason to do that
a union is an interface to the underlying memory. i cant think of a situation where one would prefer type punning through casts or something
you can treat a union like any other type. i think. im not sure if you can assign with = between unions like you would with structs, otherwise, yeah
its a type. its like a structure. only its various members overlap instead of being in sequence
>>
>>109926646
The reason is this:
1989 - strict aliasing is now UB
1989 to 1998 - people make projects saying that the standard is a grey area and the compiler is the ultimate arbiter
1999 - NOW MILLIONS OF LINES OF CODE BREAK, GET ARBITED, GO REWRITE
Other "arbiting" debacles:
-fwrapv
-fno-delete-null-pointer-checks
-deleting side effect free infinite loops, the memory is shared, but you didn't mark it volatile, YOU TRUSTED THE IMPLEMENTATION

in all sincerity, what's the situation with learning code?

I'm on vacation and out of tokens (Cursor (Grok 4.7 extra high)). When I get home, I will start work on custom firmware for consumer piece of hardware which is great, but has poor support. Within 3 months, but as soon as 2 days I will have substantial improvenents to performance (they don't try anymore), and interface (a kind of thing impossible to market, as good interfaces are unc ick). I'll be the only person in the consumer world with a good model.

another is easy to tell of. It's a Bible app for the xte4. well, crosslink, locally forked to do Bible necessaries, plus other things for massaging the texts and forming them. BUT that was 1.0. I will be abandoning epub and have a more custom fork soon as I have prompt time and tokens.

This is an impossible timeframe for a person like me, not stupid, but not Mr. Superprogrammer.

In addition, superprogrammers always graduated with honors in craziest interface you ever saw and what are these colors?

Yiu can ask mr genius amazing programmer to make the app you want. for 25 years ask.

I have no idea who you even think you're talking to. I don't use C or have a strong opinion about it, you're just so obsessed with India that you see it everywhere. How does someone even form this level of obsession?
>>
>>109930432
No, India is just the cschizos. Indians learn c first in their education and it's used for crapware everywhere in india. They can't help being obsessed with c since it's their first language.
>>
>>109930569
But why can't you help yourself from being obsessed with India?
>>
>>109930601
Omg jeet, I'll criticize your shit nation all I want. This is fucking 4chan, you sensitive little turd.
>>
>>109930259
It's because ISO C restricts enumerator values to range of ‘int’ before C23.

Java with some c++ here and there.

I am not from India. I have never met an Indian person. I don't know anything about India, beyond that it is a third world country on the other side of the planet. What I don't understand is why you are so obsessed with India? It's like being obsessed with Laos or something. Just assuming every random person you meet who expresses anything you disagree with or dislike is Laotian wouldn't make sense and it doesn't really make sense with India either. Why the India fixation specifically?

You still haven't explained your obsession with India? Why would you think every C user is Indian? C was invented in the US and is still commonly in use globally.
>>
>>109930618
Why doesn't it do that always?
>>
>>109918925
I think you mean absolute

maybe read the room and realize this is a hobby forum for hobbyists.
there's a thread for job seekers, go ask there

the recent dhh "asm makes it fast" thing tells me that knowledge/expertise in this field is even more important than ever. (he asked AI to make his screensaver faster so it made it in assembly... while also changing how the data was laid out and all that. dhh tought assembly is was the reason it got fast)

why NOT care about the specifics when you don't have to write it yourself? that's how you can get quality software with AI, only through expertise.

When I read a definition in programming why do I have more questions than answers? I have to end up searching up 3 different other things to understand the definition and then another 3 for each of the 3. How tf do people actually understand this shit?

C is basically on life support.
no one cares about it anymore.
>>
>>109931420
C is the most commonly used language on the planet, and it isn't even close.
>>
>>109931438
That's because of the billion jeets.
>>
>>109931438
and? doesn't change what I said. It's just a low quality language and the compiler devs mostly malliciously comply with whatever new garbage they keep shoving into the language. If C++ doesn't have the functionality built-in, it seems like its doomed to fail.

Why are you so obsessed with India? What does India have to do with anything? C has been dominant since the 1960s.

>>109931513
It directly contradicts the claim that it is on life support and that nobody cares about it. The backbone of the majority of modern tech is C. Non-C is a rounding error compared to C.
>>
>>109931543
>It directly contradicts the claim that it is on life support
not really? there is a lot of critical, heavily used software, in the world, but doesn't change it isn't maintained for shit.
just stop being a pathetic bitch. the compiler warn/error is low quality because they don't care. just stop.
>>
>>109931543
You have to do with india, jeet.
>>
>>109931554
Loads of new stuff is made in C too? You disliking C doesn't mean it is dying or irrelevant. It means you dislike C.
>>
>>109931575
Absolutely obsessed. Fascinating.
>>
>>109931581
again, doesn't change the fact that the C compilers themselves are on life support.
