I'm planning on building a computer soon. The tech prices don't seem to be improving.I'm trying to figure out what GPU to get. I'm getting a gift of (up to) £1000 towards this GPU. My options are:9070XT (likely XFX Mercury OC Magnetic Air Edition; or Sapphire Pulse) (~750-850)RTX 5080 (likely Zotac Solid Core) (1350; I would pay the extra)A big factor is picture related. I don't like this wonky ass standard. If I go for the 5080, I've no choice but to get one with this connector. The best recommendations seem to be the WireGuard Pro (but I'm not keen to spend an extra £150 to monitor it). What's my best option for a power supply/cable that'll avoid burning to shit?I'm favouring the 5080 over the 9070XT; I've had a few AMD GPUs in the past, and I've had issues with them. My Nvidia GPUs have worked fine, but I want to take sensible precautions against the melty connector.MSI seem to do PSUs with safeguards, but I've seen a lot of pictures of specifically MSI's yellow connector getting scorched.Inb4 waste of moneyProbably, but I'm crippled with heart problems. I can't go outside like I used to easily.

I bought i 7600xt because I make game and i want people to be able to play it.

>>109923426this connector is fine if you plug it in correctly. stop believing the scare stories of the shitposting internet. for every burnt connection there are a million that didnt.
>>109923426Generally I would advice that, unless you have a very specific niche case that you are aware of beside gaming, go with AMD.AMD GPU are more wonky yet, they often just need a bit more massaging to work. The actual issues gets solved, albeit slowly over time. Features as well tend to come, but at a lag of a few years.Keep in mind that gaming is moving towards Linux, and AMD works better with Linux, and that stance also lends itself well to future hackery or even selling it if compute completely stagnates in the future. In that sense they are more futureproof, because as long as there are contributors there are drivers, which should compounds nicely with AI and compute stagnation. Then there is just self-respect and not getting cucked by tech overlords. AMD is the least worse in that regard. They also recently made a big investment into the software side, which might mean more stability going forward as they always were a magnitude smaller than Nvidia.Of course, you should not be buying a GPU at all right now. And definitely should not buy everything in one go, as some categories are cheaper than usual if you're struggling financially. Stick with the universal parts and frameworks, for reuse and futureproofing. Nvidia for gaming is 95 % FOMO.
>>109923426Fuck this cable. Imagine getting a new graphics card only to find out you dont have the current flavour of PSU cables. I looked through every box at home and work on a Friday. I had to order it and lost a full weekend of being a patrician. Anyway, I am pretty happy with my 9070XT 32GB. I paid 1800€ including shipping and the fucking cable. I don't game so much anymore and 32Gb vram is a game changer for me, so i switched to amd. Cant yet recommend it bc I haven't even properly screwed in the PSU yet after raping it bc of cable
>>109923546>this connector is fine if you plug it in correctly. stop believing the scare stories of the shitposting internet. for every burnt connection there are a million that didnt. It's in my head though. I don't want it to fuck up and burn out.>>109923682My reasons for not going AMD:- Unsure about card longevity after they stopped supporting 7900 cards- Drivers are apparently still less stable than Nvidia's- Not likely to hop to Linux yet, though it had crossed my mind. Will likely be on W11 LTSC.- DLSS 5 actually looks kind of cool for emulatorsBut it's not definite. None of those are absolute deadstops to going AMD. I'm just leaning towards Nvidia right now.I've had a PC with a 5600x and 3060Ti in it for 4 or 5 years and it's done me well enough. I want a PC that'll likely be decent for the next 5 or so years. If I were to go Nvidia, should I be looking at any specific PSU for 12 pin protections?

>>109924999Obviously I meant how much worse is a 5080 compared to a 5090.
There is basically no real practical gain in output between a 12GB 3060 and a 16GB 5060Ti or 5080 for anything you will notice including LLM local moders ( that's just down to the model) and generative AI imaging or TTS or VTT, RAG or even vectorising and fuck all difference for gayming unless you are retarded enough to convince yourself that more than 70 FPS matters or that you can't live with 1080. I have owned all three and compared them eztensively. If they are on a DDR5 system with a dcent modern CPU in the 14th geb range it matters not a shit unless you are watching numbers on overlays for the hell of it. However they will run hotter for the same tasks and you wind up with potential melty cables on the 5080 and a stupid massive PSU.>>109924805>you need a blackwell 6000asshattery>>109923712>32Gb vram is a game changer for memore asshattery, if that was the case you would lready have two 16GB cards but the odds it makes fuck all difference to output are nilI blame gayming youtube for this nonsensical vomit the land of fools and shills who live on steam overlays and want you to buy like and subscibe. If you have more than 8GB Vram (11,12,16) it's basically all the fucking same. If you just have to get a 5060TI 16GB OP, it does not have the melty cable issue but you won;t notice a ton of differhce from a 3060 12GB unless you go looking for it and there will be zero gain worth it including on local llms or gen AI. >>109925281Looking at the msi page the main difference seems to be that safeguard only has a buzzer peeping eventually shutting down while + has the MSI software on top.
>>109925281>>109925340Forgot the link sorry https://www.msi.com/blog/introducing-gpu-safeguard-advanced-gpu-protection-on-msi-next-gen-power-suppliesit can be interesting to see the per pin current and get a popup but on the other hand side MSI center sucks. The one with safeguard can be enough but you do you
>>109925340>>109925367Yeah I'm looking at these features, and SafeGuard+ seems really cool, but I'm only looking at a 5080. I reckon SafeGuard would be enough. It's just to intervene if something is going very wrong, which these cards can go very wrong, but the 5080 isn't the biggest offender for melting cables. The 4090 and 5090 seem like the type of cards you'd need for the SafeGuard+ thing.I'd also read Seasonic were working on a similar technology, hence the question. Wasn't sure if FSP had come up with anything either - they're usually pretty belt and braces.
>>109925267The 8GB sucks because it's not enough for models and context (note I kept saying a 3060 12GB DDR6 on DDR5 and PCI 4) but really a 5060 TI 16GB is probably the way to go for you. You'll see yourself, anons think if only I had this GPU then this AI crap might get good when really it does not get much better in output and even the speed increase is just more than you care about anyway. 32GB models are not some new dawn, just the same shit. Me? I don't get 4K over 1080P even for modern gaymes and I don;t give a fuck once it's steadily over 60 FPS preferably in the 70s. For LLMs, when the T/S output is faster than you can read and it's shitting out paragraphs and pages for me, it really makes little difference, I don;t get a vast difference in image generation either and basically you will see most games on max settings on either too unless you need 4K 144.The ONLY real use for high VRAM cards with 32GB is a wierd one, VR. Now I tried it and did not like it, I don;t like having that shit strapped to my face and it's not like there is a huge library of ultra compelling stuff but maybe meybe if that's your think then you can use 32GB. Fun fact most models will run teh same and output the same from a 1080TI 11GB > 3060 12GB DDR6 -> 5060TI 16GB there is a speed lift betwene the 1080TI and 3060 12GB and a smaller one to the 5060 TI 16GB. I hated having the 5080, hated the machine hated the temps it hit, hated the watts pulled by the i7-14700 and the temps. I don't proactively hate the 5060TI 16GB but it just is practically nil difference.Years ago the leaps were massive and absolutely worth it. That's not been true for a while now (last 6 years)

I've been using a pre-recall cablemod 3 8-pin to 12vhpwr on a 4080 set for 320-350 watts for over three years, recent vids got me curious, I heat probed all the connector cables and found nothing out of place.I also dont understand the fears over the "octopus" cables. If the PSU and cables are Not Shit Quality it should not matter, and if anything 3 or 4 8pins should be less thermally stressful at the PSU side than a 12vhpwr to 12vhpwr8 pins officially support 7 amps per pin for 250w and actual good cables have enough headroom to run 10-11 amps per pin with no problem. A 3x-to-1 should have no problem meeting the 600w spec + peak spikes.
>>109926869You need a 4080 class card to reliably run 120FPS w/ DLSS w/ FG at 1080p.>>109926886I also wonder how many GPU burns may have at least partially been a result of people with OCD constantly moving shit around or replugging the card for whatever reason maybe excessive cleaning, or set their cables up wrong, or picked a case too small and the cable was wedged against the side panel.
>>109926886for me the quad octopus caused much more coil whine than a native 12vhpwr cable. With that said using a cablemod and moddiy cable with 90 degree connector the former would hit 9.1A on a single pin using an astral 5090 and the latter was pretty well balanced however this can change depending on the terminal positions and how you otherwise bend the cables. I'm currently using Asus special cable that goes up to 8.8A on a single pin with the lowest being 6.8 but given that the ampere rises from 1 to 6 it's likely caused by some cable bending.

AMD GPUs nowadays are the safer option. No, seriously, they're cheaper, safer regarding power connectors, hell, even their drivers are more stable nowadays (for example, back in January Nwordia rolled out some shitty drivers the level of 2014 AMD, I'm not kidding). Now, shit happens on Lisa Su's side too, not gonna lie, but it's far, FAR less frequent. You just gotta monitor the driver situation and block updates if anything. Also, the 12-pin connector is awful, and not only because of its thin wires. There's no load balancing in green GPUs anymore, not even in top ones. As a result, it's fine only for <300W cards, like 5070. 5080 is a no-go.Tl;dr AMD and Nvidia swapped places but not the prices. >>109932904Get a top-tier power supply and a good surge breaker then.
>>109933349I ordered the MSI one and have surge protectors.
>>109923426What kinds of games do you even want to play? at what resolution? at what settings? There are some cheap ass GPUs (around 100$) sold on Ebay right now that can play Crysis 3 at 1080p at highest settings with 60fps average, if you're not into AAA slop then you don't really need more than that.
>>109924927you are insane
>>109933431Too expensive?
>>1099328922014 AMD more like 2026 AMD cuz their shit is still fucking broken all the time, but nVidia has been catching up to their game (by becoming worse as well, it's all fucked) anyway facts
>>109933445I have no issues with cost if it's actually worth it, however you're just throwing your money at the grinder, the funniest part is when Nvidia will release a new feature in few years that will force you to upgrade anyway, futureproofing is really not a thing anymoreI don't even know what kind of games even require you to have a 5090, most games are not that intensive, and the ones that are run poorly on the 5090 with highest settings its insaneAre you one of those people who simply wants to own a 5090 for prestige rather than gaming?
>>109933469>Are you one of those people who simply wants to own a 5090 for prestige rather than gaming? Not at all. I figured going with higher quality now would let me put off upgrading for longer.
>>109933489Can you actually tell me what games you want to play? it sounds like you're picking a GPU before knowing what you actually want to run on it
>>10993346920k is pocket change, just exit position and buy your toys, done
>>109933505Mostly indies and older games.>then why are you talking about buying a $5K GPU, that shit runs on granny's old laptopBut what if a really good modern game comes out that happens to have cutting edge graphics?
>>109923426If you ever plan on using Linux, go with the AMD card.
>>109933401>MSIOhnononono. Anon, you're going to get jewed by chinesium components. Seasonic makes all their components in house and Titanium-graded components will handle undervolting with no risk of failing if there's a small surge.
>>109923518daveillzs did this and then he murdered the game and we cant play it anymore
>>109933785The MSI PSU I've chosen has glowing reviews all round anon.
>>109932558doesn't exist
>>109933582>But what if a really good modern game comes out that happens to have cutting edge graphics? We already reached the limit of good graphics in like 2014, you're really betting your money on 'what ifs'?
>>109933582Bro I bought a 5080 Fe for msrp and have not played any modern slop on it.
Why do you people decide to buy now still?Serious question, there were blaring alarm bells why did many of you not buy specific parts?I built my PC over the course of a year and bought each key component over time during sales and during signifiers.
>>109934779There are no sales anymore, might as well do it now before prices rise
>>109934797I mean before that even now you can get some parts but you had 2 fucking years to prepare for gpu
>>109923426Depends entirely on your use case. For gaming/general computing, literally anything decent made in the last 10 years will be fine. GTX1080ti still runs every game at decent frames still. Don't be afraid to go AMD if you can get a deal on it. Gaytracing is a meme designed to eat up processing power for barely noticeable gains in visuals. DLSS looks like shit and is not worth the Nvidia tax. I've seen it on a 5090. Its cool for about 5 minutes, and then its just whatever. For local AI/image gen, it has to be an Nvidia card. The more recent, the better. CUDA is very much still a thing, and you will need AT LEAST 16gb of VRAM to run any decent model at decent speeds. Also, its not like local is automatically superior. Paid AI is heavily subsidized right now. If you don't need to run it locally for whatever reason, its much cheaper to just buy tokens than run it yourself. You can get Claude for $20/month. At current 5090 prices, you could use Claude for 20 years before you saw any savings, and that doesn't even include electricity or A/C to cool your gooner cave when that 5090 turns it into a sauna.
