Is Linux gaming a thing?
you can easily run proton without steam with umu-launcher
The best game this year has a native linux build
>>109927863But why would you run any game without Steam? You're not one of those Epig shills that sucks off Tim Swiney on the daily are you?
>>109927887Soms people like to own their games and buy them on GOG, anon.
You can use Proton on non-steam games.I fail to see the issue.
>>109927891GOG games come with setup scripts / installers for that. You can literally just run them if they provide a native Linux build, otherwise just run it through Wine or Proton.

>>109928050Installing Nvidia drivers can be really annoying, specially for someone new
>>109928050Fedora is a fully FOSS distribution meaning they don't install any proprietary drivers like NVIDIA by default. It will run off of Nouveau by default which is a free driver in Mesa.Nobara, is sort of what like CachyOS is to Arch. They take Fedora and fix all the shit Red Hat can't be fucked to and also add in a few optimised tweaks of their own.
>>109928050>>109928069>>109928072yes, because following a 3 step instruction (enable one repo, type one command, wait for it to complete) is so hard it's better to use a meme distro
>>109927863I tried installing about 40 games through heroic launcher. Three wouldn’t launch at all, two needed steam’s proton instead of ge-proton, three needed some tweaking with winetricks. So you have 75% that just werks, ~10% that need hotlinking steam, ~10% that needs tweaks and ~10% that won’t run without major effort or at all. For me that’s a sufficiently good track record to avoid microslop’s trash

>>109928030I have 5070 and the only issues on fedora is if rpm has a new driver but the flathub didn’t yet update their harness for it. does Crimson Desert works without Steam?
>>109928099>5070 & fedoraso strange. I recognize the words but feels alien in a sense

>>109928130Yes, small forks that don’t actually do much of anything useful are memes compared to the baseline distro. It takes 30 seconds to add and install nonfree nvidia drivers to fedora why in the world would you install a whole different distro just to avoid pasting two commands into the terminal??You’ll want to learn how to do it anyway cause theres a lot of good shit in third party repos. Even basic bitch ffmpeg is in nonfree
>>109928141Nobara does lots of useful things though, much more than just installing the fucking drivers you need for your hardware.Yes, you can replicate everything it's doing but not in 30 seconds. curl | sudo bash
>>109928134>don't hear about Fedora being used for gaming much. it's a corporate product from red hatnta but isn't fedora the most basic bitch distro that exists aside from steamos?you have ubuntu or mint for old hardware and fedora for new hardware

>>109927863You can game on Linux now
>>109928156I asked a clanker and all of those seem pretty basic to set upI suppose there's no reason to not use it if you want a decent ootb experience but as another Fedora (KDE) nigga I did most of those with barely any effort, any non retarded /g/fag shouldn't struggle with those especially in an age where an LLM can handhold you reasonably well
>>109928168>not sure why everyone thinks fedora is for "top computers" seems like corpo propagandafedora is a 'modern' distribution that removes a lot of old cruft. early gayland support, early support for fractional and multiple displays with different resolutions support, new version cooked twice a year. it's a better ootb experience if you have modern hardware compared to some grandpa-coded debian or mint
>>109928176>I asked a clanker and all of those seem pretty basic to set upYes, none of it is difficult if you know what you're doing but we're talking a new user here. It'll take more than 30 seconds unless you already have that script you can quickly curl | sudo bash to set it all up for you.The point is to save time, also it can sometimes be more stable than Fedora too because they work with snapshots of the Fedora repo that get synced once or twice a month and backport fixes to Mesa or the kernel, etc, immediately if they need to fix a regression, etc.
>>109927863I exclusively game without Steam, I think it's super annoying.

>>109928459Just say you're too poor to afford a modern display. There's plenty of games and videos with actual HDR output, not "fake" they were rendered/mastered that way.
>>109928462>whyThe cool thing about computers is that they're not consoles, so you can do more than just videogames on them. You can even play games while you work!
>>109928456The use case is that i want to press one button and have a bunch of actions happenI can do this easily on windowsI can do this easily on macosI can't do this on le highly technical tinkerer OS which is fucking bizarre

>>109928443>>109928452I do EDA and embedded software development on Linux. The other EE uses Windows and his shit is always breaking. I have no idea what this guy is talking about having to reboot on Linux. I have never once been forced to reboot.
>>109928469>still no examplelol"HDR" in games means "when your character goes from inside to outside, the brightness adjusts with a smooth scale instead of being able to see everything right away". It's literally even more fake than "fake HDR".
>>109928475lol the whole point of Wayland is to have a cellphone like environment on Desktop Linux. You will be happier on Android than trying to force Linux to be like it. Stop bothering the adults.
>hdr is a meme>desktop environment is a meme>upscaling, framegen and raytracing is a meme>vidya is a meme in the first placeWhat do you even do on your computer? Recompile emacs and vim all day?
>>109928476for me also KiCad works, FreeCAD also works just fine.
Linux has a bunch of gotchas. You might use it at first things might seem like they're working but then it starts breaking piece by piece. For example I installed Linux. Went to bed and the next day logged in from sleep on KDE. My screen was FULL of artifacts, it didn't go over the programs, only the desktop but they stayed until I logged out so I know it's the compositor breaking.I have an all AMD brand new high end gaming PC, so it's not my hardware. I logged out, logged back in, it was gone so it was a problem with the sleep function on KDE I assume. But it's still buggy. Then I tried to play a game, specifically apotheon. It's a single player game. I got it on sale on GOG, launched it with heroic. Used proton cachyOS latest as it's the default. I didn't configure anything, No voice audio on the intro movie, no music in the actual game, it was broken on launch, you can test it yourself. The windows version is absolutely fucked on Linux.I also tried launching the game through steam, and because steam experimental has no codecs, it just gives an error video screen. So I'm guessing if you owned the steam copy, it would default to the Linux version, but it just goes to show that it's not perfect on Linux. Then I uninstalled and switched to the native Linux version. The native Linux version just worked on heroic. This is a case example of Linux not just working out of the box with wine/proton. Not all software will run on Linux perfectly. It is what it is, but it's not a case where someone can say every game works. This was just an average game. A lot of windows games don't work on Linux or have problems. Also I can't prove it, but it seems like my internet and browsing speed is slower and loading of videos is slower compared to windows 10.
>>109928474I can do this on Linux just fine because the software is free and most the APIs are C like or D-Bus and easy to bind against.
>>109928450what about sandboxing game mods?what about sofware exploits?>>109928409sway control tools + wtype works, you can even run sway under your normal compositor if you want to
>>109928483It's literally a completely different colourspace, retard. It's not just adjusting the brightness
>>109928490Do selenium but with netsurf instead. I'm waiting.
>>109928487FreeCAD is unusable garbage IMO. I wish it weren't. KiCad is great. I moved to it from what's now called "lepton EDA."
>>109928464>which means games will have to optimize their codeevery single poorfag coping with ancient GPU will be left behind the second next gen consoles release
>>109928494Real HDR is. That's my point, retard. The term "HDR" in games does not mean what you think it means.
>>109928492>game mods?Sounds like non-free software.
>>109928496>FreeCAD is unusable garbage IMOthings changed a bit with v1.1. but depending on what I need to do I always use an older standalone Sketchup version through wine. also works just fine
>>109928497Next gen consoles are going to be really fucking expensive thanks to AI and still probably won't be as good as someone's midrange PC. Only the poorfags have anything to worry about on that front
>>109928361>>109928464>>109928497GPUs are going the way soundcards went: everything is moving to software rendering because it's good enough and CPUs are getting faster.
>>109928495Anon, what are you on about? Chrom(ium) has a whole automation API built-in. That's basically the lowest of the low hanging fruits.
>>109928492firejail works fine
>>109928510I really prefer OpenSCAD but the mechanical people all use this online thing.
>>109928517>netsurf is chromiumRetarded or just pretending?
>>109928515>GPUs are going the way soundcards went: everything is moving to software rendering because it's good enough and CPUs are getting faster.t.
>>109928506xonotic is free
>>109928524that's great for parametric stuff. had to do some nuts/bolts, berry nice.never touching anything online. that's a sacred rule. steals your shit, needs your email. I'm not falling for that meme
>>109928533It's not my shit it's the company's. They say use the online tool and so the online tool gets used.Everyone in software is essentially running an HTTP reverse transport shell and uploading the entire codebase to OpenAI anyway.
>>109928527I'm refusing to engage with your retardation any further or your poor choices in browsers. Best of luck.
>>109928546>gets BTFO>cries like a bitch and runs awayWaylandfags everybody
>>109928528The big thing for the last generation is programmable pipeline. At this point the only major difference between GPUs and CPUs is the memory model. They are going to go away as a specialized piece of hardware before the prices go down.
>>109928557Sure, just wait until CPUs come with a few tens of thousands of cores. Any minute now.
>>109927899GOG is amazing holy cow. You pay money, you get game, just like how things used to work.
>>109928557>At this point the only major difference between GPUs and CPUs is the memory modelAnd also the fact that at the moment you can maybe play gta vice city at smooth framerate with cpu rendering alonewhich is great news for tux racers but maybe less so for everybody else
>>109928543To be fair, I'm pretty sure PTC says it will use your shit you design in OnShape for their AI nonsense on the free plan. It's still a semi-valid concern. Given I've seen WalkMe shit in Siemens dogshit, I'm sure it "accidentally" leaks too.
>>109928571Yeah if it were my company there's no way half this stuff would fly but it's not my company.
>>109928505It's irrelevant what it means if your display server doesn't even support it.
>>109928489Completely different experience for me. I used both Cinnamon and GNOME over the years and neither ever broke for me. Now you made me scared to try KDE lelI have an NVidia card, which I've always heard works terribly on Linux, but it's always been good to me. No headache to setup drivers or anything, even as a complete Linux noob. As for games, it plays everything I want and more. Cyberpunk never worked on my computer when I ran Windows - turns out Linux runs it just fine.It has also improved my internet speed. My wifi dongle only has official drivers for Windows, so I had to install a custom module for Linux. I shit you not, I reach +100mb/s download speeds, whereas on Windows I barely broke the 3mb/s mark.
>>109927887Because steam is the shittiest software I deal with. Takes forever to start up, forced updates, literally fails to render the stupid store page, segfaults which steals focus while gaming (literally have to turn off steamoverlay and steaminput because of their shit software). Some games shipped also have hard dependency on steaminput and are literally unplayable. A lot of Sony shit is still borked.
>>109928576I still can't believe I had to ask Siemens why AWC was downloading random JavaScript from the Internet for an "on-prem" software... It's insane.
>>109928586>Because steam is the shittiest software I deal with.Steam went to shit the moment they integrated a browser in their fucking launcher. That thing runs ass nowadays and you can't disable it.
>>109928584Nvidia works well now only because they were forced to bend the knee. With NOVA and a workable mesa driver, hopefully the reign of terror will be over for good.
>>109928581So you don't know a single piece of media that's not just a demo that is properly mastered for HDR. Got it.
>>109928591All is slop and slop is all. Need to ship more features more better with more api and data access and always online heartbeat or the world will end
>>109928586>>109927887It's always so funny to me how "gammers" see Steam as this great anti-DRM freedom thing and everyone from Linux sees it as the most locked-down annoying piece of software they've ever used.We both live in totally different universes.
>>109928607>linuxfags being hysterical retardssame old, same old
>>109928605Google it. You'll find loads of media with real HDR support. In tems of games, mostly any modern game will have HDR support built-in to it (but not always, that's why SDR tonemapping is still important)
>>109927863umu-run gameWow that was hard
>>109928600Which is why I don't understand why people jerk it off. GoG is objectively a superior experience for those that know. Even Heroic in flatpak, is quite literally a better UX and nearly as secure. Literally the only absolute thing steam beings to the table is Pressure Vessel, which can be buggy in some cases anyway.
>>109928614yet people keep wanting to impose their windows retarded behavior into it, for some reason.stay on windows/macos, we're full
>>109928614>game launcher>actually we'll let a browser run in the background all the time with no option to disable ityeah nah Linuxies are right on that one
>>109928047>rimworldi'm so sick and tired of that game fucking breaking, my current issue on my mod-list is colonist priorities/tasking being raped, SO COLONISTS JUST DO JACK SHIT 90% of the time, despite there being shit to haul and clean, and work to be done they'll idle forever unless i manually assign tasks, no errors in devlog either that point to the issue. Fuck this piece of shit game.
>>109928497I have a Playstation 5 as well, but it doesn't replace my PC. Some games are fine on a console but I'm not giving up on my PC and moving 100% to console.
>>109928586This. Steam is a fucking garbage DRM that was forced upon me. It only matters (and is good) if you play multiplayer games.
>>109928616Google it yourself. You'll learn there is nothing at all.
>>109928625That and it manages to use more CPU time (on idle) than any software I use normally. It was to the point where I'd have background 10% CPU usage (lowest clock rate to be fair) just keeping it open. I close it as soon as I'm done because idk wtf it is doing otherwise, other than waste my power.
I still use lutris minus its gay scripts but it's pretty clunky.
works on my machine
>>109928626Isn't the code easily accessible and moddable? Just point a clanker at it and ask it to figure things out, it just werks (tm) nowadays
>>109928631The burden of proof is on you. You're the one claiming it doesn't exist.Go play Cyberpunk 2077, for example and that's an old game now.
>>109928645Never understood Lutris. Even installing games from their website is 50/50. I think it just has specific hardware and if your specs don't match, well good luck.
>>109928645you can just look at the log and see what arguments/env variables it uses for games that only work through lutris, and like directly use them in your custom script
>>109928663makes a wine prefix and installs requirments for gaming. also vkd3d and a bunch of other settings. you can manually replicate all but can be tedious at first. just use it and notice what it does, in logs.
>>109928679or just install heroic instead of faffing about with obsolete garbage like lutris
>>109928663I basically end up creating a directory for the prefix, pointing Lutris to run the installer exe inside that prefix, and then I just click through the installer after it makes the prefix. Then I point the launcher to the installation directory. I never use the installation scripts.
>>109928662No, the burden of proof is always on the one claiming something exists. Retard.
>>109928662HDR in Cyberpunk 2077 is just a pure SDR with a fake HDR settingSelf-pwn.
>>109928722You're really too fucking lazy to do a search? Here, first link on my SearxNG instance:https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/List_of_games_that_support_high_dynamic_range_display_(HDR)>>109928728It's not. It has actual PQ output.
>>109927871Never used linux, does this work on games that have their own launcher? Like dmm games
>>109928476You do have to reboot because on Linux you HAVE to update.>just don't update Yeah, sure, and then when you need to install something? it's missing from the repo. >sync the repoAlright, now when I try to install it I can't because of out of date dependencies. This is a non issue on Windows. I can just keep installing software without needing to 'update'. I want my computer as I left it, I will not reboot.
>>109928886you only need to reboot to apply kernel updates dear
>>109928663>installing games from their websiteThey should remove that, it's obsolete now that umu exists and many of them don't even work.
>>109928886>I want my computer as I left it, I will not reboot. What you want is one of the immutable distributions. They are read-only and do not update without reboots. Everything is left exactly as it was until you reboot.>But how then will I install software without rebootingFlatpak packages or containers like Distrobox>But I need <INSERT_SOFTWARE> that requires installing onto the system and therefore needs a rebootSuck it up and reboot. Windows sometimes requires a reboot after installing certain software too.
>>109928864they have worked for memind i'm not familiar with the acronym
>>109928886This is simply false. In Windows, you have to reboot in many cases because default file locking behavior prevents you from removing a file from the file system while it is being read/executed. There is even an API that lets you store the filepath to remove on shutdown/reboot in the registry. On Linux, unlink just fucking works. Processes still running have access to the inodes, while everything new can just pick up the new code.
>>109928897which are all the fucking time?>use an lts kernelI guess this if i stop nvidia updates (which I do on windows too to be fair)>>109928907I've never really run in to problems with that. (Uptime would be higher but I had to update nvidia drivers for PoE2
>>109928176The fact that ALL of this is an issue is why Linux gaming isn't a thing.
>>109928959that you for your input, mr slopya nutella
>>109928959It's an issue specifically on Fedora Linux. It's not universal.
>>109928905It's just a nip website that does a lot of things including game hosting and some games require their launcher
>>109928864Obviously that depends on whether the launcher runs.
>>109928925>which are all the fucking time? What the hell are you doing on a workstation that needs the *absolute latest kernel* every time an update gets released? You don't have to reboot when you update the kernel unless you need a feature that's only in the new kernel.
