What was the point of that thang?
Get Steam into living rooms.

it's a niche product for people who want a comfy living room TV gaming setup, aren't budget conscious, and don't care about playing AAA games released post 2020. If you fit that description, it's a great device.
>>109934075So nobody.
>>109934075on the reddit i only see it in bedrooms and basements
>>109934056The hype was around it being somewhat cheap (as it should be given it's AMD's scraps and mass produced)Then the goalposts moved by valvdrones and reddit bugman about muh premium SFF console experience which kinda died because it's completely shit no matter how much you reframe it.
>>109934127I thought the hype was "le just works playstation-like built-in gaming pc"
>>109934089is that why it sold out
>>109933851on release it was really bad.seemed like a cash grab, unlike the frame and the controller which came across as actually priced to the market.I guess they figured they could just price it like that because it's THE steam box, the gabe cube, the valve machine that has been discussed and theorized half jokingly since the days people would photoshop XBox 720's and Play Station Fives.ram jump doesn't even explain it. the chip is RDNA 3 lmao. this is mobile tier performance in your living room. why even bother. the only possible redeeming factor is form factor.it is not even more efficient than other small form factor computers on the market.HOWEVER.the pc market is so bad;the prices are jumping so horrifically fast now;that it has become relatively affordable compared to its peers.a stupid price for the compute it has, but that sort of complaint is now at about the same level as a boomer complaining about how a pack of bubblegum used to be a nickel.
>>109934171That was part of it, but since it is just Steam, in order to actually have some value, you have to deliver some value which Valve completely failed at to the point where a whole ass PC with a better GPU was the same price. Which should be impossible unless you just stop caring.Anyone who claims that price wasn't the main factor or at least a major factor is post-hoc to the pricing reveals.
>>109933851isnt this that muslim thing
>>109933851play Black Mesa at 4k@60 with no fan noise>>109933937I considered installing a distro I like more on it but SteamOS also manages firmware updates
>>109934222it sold out because there is no ram or ssds to put in it ;_;
Seriously why aren't valve launching a BYO Ram and SSD sku? What's the point in holding them hostage?
>>109933851smol
>>109933851it connects you to the hive mind
>>109934127>Then the goalposts moved by valvdroneswhat? the goalposts moved because the cost of everything exploded, even for major techplayers which valve is not.
>>109933851No brain require decisionWho knows if itll work out for them like the steam deck. There's bound to be idiots with too much money(or just collectors) out there willing to buy one for the heck of it
>>109934327The cost of everything going up doesn't magically justify the Steam machine's cost. It's much more nuanced then that. The whole point of making such a device is that you can reduce the costs in materials, shipping and get bulk deals. However, that's not what happened with the Steam machine, it's not reflected at all in the price. In the same environment a custom PC which has much more overhead in terms of retail, shipping, etc was matching or exceeding the steam machine and you didn't have to try hard. It's easy to say that muh valve is small they can't get good deals but the price on the Steam machine almost makes it seem like they got worst deals than any given retard on Amazon which IMO seems unlikely.
>>109934387They cant price it lower than part costs unless its hardware/software locked at multiple points(whcih they would never do bc tinkerers would complain + they have tinkerers developping the thing) or companies could just buy the things en masse and install windows on them or use it as cheap compute for their server farms. The entire point of this thing was to get people to buy games from steam and use steam os.
>>109934435>They cant price it lower than part costsNo one is asking to price it lower than the parts costs. It's just the price as revealed was extremely high for the parts that are inside of it.The GPU and CPU in it are shit, evidence points to them being literal scrap from AMD (CPU is an APU with the GPU fused off, GPU is a cut down Navi33) Even the environment doesn't justify the machine costing as much as it does. That 16GB of DDR5 and SSD, while expensive, does not justify $1000+
>>109934387>The whole point of making such a device is that you can reduce the costs in materials, shipping and get bulk deals.anon you bulk deal is going to be dependent on the bulk you order. and you are ordering from limited production pool that is being dipped in by companies many times your size who are buying up production in multiples of years. >It's easy to say that muh valve is small they can't get good deals but the price on the Steam machine almost makes it seem like they got worst deals than any given retard on Amazon which IMO seems unlikely.>I can buy already manufactured for stock at cheaper prices than stock bought from current production lotsno fucking shit anon.
>>109934521Maybe they're flying off shelves and they jacked up prices to keep up with how fast they can make them?
>>109934546>anon you bulk deal is going to be dependent on the bulk you orderSo, valve got a worse deal than retail?
>>109933851they fucked up the timing, againif it had released 2 years earlier at half the price, it would have been a paradigm shift in livingroom pc gaming for the "average" person - in other words the consoletard market they were clearly intending to target before AI fucked literally everything
>>109934223>I guess they figured they could just price it like that because it's THE steam boxThey priced it like that because they were paying the current prices all along, unlike you. You were buying existing stock that was imported before prices went up back then. Prices are only catching up now as stocks are running low and new stock has to be imported at higher prices.
>>109934269>firmware updatestried fwupdtool?
>>109934758Retail prices depend on import price. When you buy a RTX 5060 Ti, you're not having the store import it straight from the factory in China for you when you make the order. It's sitting in some local warehouse and probably has been sitting there for a while since it's a low demand product. The price it cost to make is irrelevant to both you and the store selling it, all they care about is how much they paid to import it whenever that was. Prices go up when they need to import new stock.
