other than that eh, rust is very similar to c++ except it removed a bunch of the bloat and kept the features that devs actually need.

i am thinking of going back to c++ because the compile times are so damn slow

but man if i was working in a team rust is a no brainer, i would never trust another dev with c++

let's be real, ECS is a newer approach, favored today because a) cache locality is big and b) you get parallelization for essentially free

If you actually knew Rust you'd know that it is not suitable for making games. It is too rigid for rapid prototyping and that is essential for gamedev. At least in game logic department(eg actual game making), it's fine for engine part.

>Rust's disk usage problem?
A pod with Rust web service I wrote takes order of magnitude less disk space than a similar node js webapp.

A couple Rust threads ago i asked for some elaborated upon reasoning to dislike Rust. One schizo came in and started rambling eventually, i asked chatGPT to analyze his post and the concurrence was that he was making mountains from molehills. That in fact, Rust implementation has a lot of benefits and the downsides are almost entirely down to just having another language, and that takes time for people to adapt to.
I fed that back to the schizo and he crumpled.

My point isn't that Rust is good or bad - it is that there is a tool, LLM's, that you can use to get genuinely good opinions. But they have an IQ bar you have to pass in order to get good responses, you also have to have some internal machinery to parse what i would call "unmerited inflated consensus", to then question that back to the LLM, at which point they'll admit wrong and readjust their answer.

Anyway, my offer still stands.

Can anyone elaborate on why Rust is bad?
>>
>>109943513
Writing fast Rust is not the most intuitive thing in the world. My Rust program is slower than my Go and C++ programs. I'm going to study to make it faster and know Rust can indeed be fast but it takes skill unlike Go, C, and C++.

>>109943765

>>
>>109944242
Let's just set the scene here. I am asking "Why is Rust bad", this is a broad topic, but here specifically one ought to infer the cultural weighting of the question.
From there, you'd obviously set out to answer the question with said weighting applied inherent to the question, thus narrowing a relatively broad and open question down to specifics that align with the inherited assumptions given by cultural analysis.

This is quite easy to do when topic experts are presented with a broad question, in fact it is common to be prideful of ones ability to do that as it shows a deep knowledge of the topic and ability to transfer the knowledge into a relatable form, increasing transmissibility.

In asking the broad question, with the aforementioned acknowledged, what i have observably been left with is people pretending (pretentiously) to be topic matter experts but who stumble at the first step of inquisition into said topic. It's meta humour on my part. Going to a "technology" sub section of a forum on a social media site, a site that habours heightened opinions often involving hyperbole, to then set the lens clear by observation that everyone here is in fact a retard - via the vector of asking a very simple question in regards to a topic that proliferates endlessly on said forum.

I will continue to laugh at you, and everyone else, and i will continue to ask simple questions and watch as you all fail to answer them. This is enjoyable pass time for me. It also helps me learn to better defend my opinions by thinking multiple steps ahead of you "people", despite the fact that no one even comes close to entering those contingent ends.

pretty much the only thing bad about rust is it's still kind of a jankfest in terms of its type system, all in the name of specific implementation sanity and performance reasons.
I still find stuff like GATs to be half-assed and even the borrow check formalization keeps getting dogwalked because of compilation performance reasons.

these are all legitimate IMO, but not that important, since Rust is basically the only language even trying to do the things it does. Here's hoping to further improvements or a better language.

also the old ranges suck, but the new ones should fix that too. would like to have seen better static_asserts instead of halfassed shit like slice::array_window() -> check if const N is gt 0 at runtime, but whatever.

>>

please use newer training data in the future.
const panic existed since 2018, and got stabilized in 2021. "slice::array_windows()" is const unstable (#![feature(const_slice_make_iter)]). so that assert IS const.
a possible better objection would have been arguing for using NonZero instead, but then you would have tards kvetching about "ugly" code, and "village idiot"-grinning at the sight of an impossible (AND const) unwrap ("Option::unwrap()" is also const stable).
if you don't immediately see an error with N=0, that's because of limitations in const eval in "cargo check" and rust-analyzer. run "cargo build" and you will see a compile error. those limitations are known and deliberate for performance reasons. i have ideas around modifying cranelift codegen and repurposing it as lightweight (non-functional) build target specifically for this use-case, to serve as a maximally lightweight check-time build option. but i don't know if i will ever get the time to do it. and cranelift as-is is fast enough already for those who want this.

Sadly yes, I mean I watched his other stuff so I could get a better understanding of what is going on under the hood and all everything works together. For example, the game is running on MW2 engine, that he decompiled to rust. (I think?) and then he went on to decompile Stake 3 physics engine and Minecraft Terrain generation and ported those two to rust as well. Now I really do want to know how it meshes these three things together, I couldn't understand the source code very well since I suck at programming and I'm trying to get better but my guess here would be that he runs MW2 normally, when he gets into a match he calls Minecraft terrain generation and the Stake 3 side mode sort of hangs around until you activate it.

Is guess that is it? But how on earth could you actually do that? what happens to the physics of MW2 when you hand control over to the Skate 3 systems?

Remember artists don't see programmers or STEM guys in general as human. This has nothing to do with "techbros" or some kind of backlash against AI (which the average software developer has nothing to do with) They've been trying replace software developers with no-code for years. AI has just made this explicit.
Theyv'e been using open source for years bitching about how bad the "design" of open source is. And unlike open source devs, artists never contribute to the commons. Because as much as they like to act like anti-capitalist hippies, they're the real capitalists deep down.

>now that you brought up these two cases I can see it is literally impossible to handle them, kudos to you.
the point is, real world error conditions can't always be handled. unwrap exists for this reason, same way asserts exist in both rust and other languages, or why you shouldn't handle sigsegv unless you're fucking retarded.

i already told you this was added in 2018, and got stabilized in 2021. you wouldn't have needed another anon to show you if you weren't retarded.
