I almost envy people who have thousands of loose files and don't care at all. I've always been obsessed with having a clean PC, less files, decent desktop etc.

How do I learn to tolerate digital messiness & clutter?

I secretly believe "messy" PC means productiveness. Because, IMO, productive people don't have time to tidy things up.

Step one: remove the stick out of your ass
Step two: relax for the first time in your life
Step three: understand that in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter
Step four: try to enjoy your life.

hey OP, I suffered from a simillar mindset. The way I overcame this was realizing, that their journey needn'st be my journey and that I can balance neatness and non-chalance towards mess.
Now this might seem counterintuitive, but I keep things I am temporarily working on, on my desktop and the rest sorted in the filesys. As soon as something is done with it goes inside, docs/music/pics etc. And I keep things that are most used/important in the center and gradually move towards the edge according to its importance.

You could use a completely different strategy, OP.
Good Luck.

I barely ever look at my desktop

Use case for desktop icons?

A desk is a tool, you're suppose to collage things you're working on, on the desk.
A computer is a desktop, same principle.

People pretend to organize and concatenate things, thinking they'll increase efficiency without ever establishing the necessary internal machinery to make use of said efficiency gains.

Consider someone (women love to do this), that is organizing a cupboard full of stacking containers for food. They'll take it all out, stack them all nicely and then layer in the lids. They consider this efficient as it makes more space.
Yet the pre-necessary internal machinery necessary to make use of that efficiency is the superpower to think about which container you want specifically and magically pulling it out of the stack, then when finished with it, magically putting it back in.

The reason, the drive was to increase space and increase access speeds to the containers. You increased space while decreasing access, and you decreased access in a manner that to overcome that potential gain you have to be magical.

A "clean PC" (by pure observation of this phenomenon over the years) seeks to increase space and increase efficiency and or access, yet 99% of peoples times is spent in a web browser, with ephemeral memory and inherent bloat that the user cannot control. In the end, they spend more time pruning and preening than accessing.

-- and to anyone replying that you're definitely the one person who actually does stuff that benefits from x y z, just stop lying on the internet, please.

How do you define "messy"?

Not really it's just a matter of
>Visual organization vs efficient route structuring
Reducing the total steps (friction) to file access is the end goal for a lot of people.
If reducing space is your goal, you can simply delete files you don't need. Nothing changes and you get more space. That or you could get more space, which leads to a snowball of information pileup.
For an IRL example. You can organize your garments by color, but that wont help when your constantly looking for a polo. Instead of letting things become messy because "you just know where it is by instinct" you can organize the things you need by how often they are used. That or just bookmark parts of your data structure to create a highway to the right folders. Something as simple as how you name your files can make searches easier due to how your OS automatically sorts filetypes.
>!000_My_Will.pdf
Most computers sort by ASCII or Unicode order making 0 and punctuation marks being the first to appear for most computers. Mixed casing is documented as easier to read and underscores allow for a program to read the address as a single continuous block, preventing scripts from crashing due to unexpected breaks.
vs
>eryxtrftyugihupjoipko.pdf
Random gibberish that makes a file neigh impossible to recall in a lineup of similar files.

Also using the search function becomes a whole lot easier when you name your file types right.

Pin the recycle bin in the file explorer
Press the Windows key and start typing to search anything
Delete everything on your desktop and start menu

this is a good idea. might try it because i got all my projects in Documents/Dev and they live there, never finished

Such a minor point of the whole and you're still wrong.

I've got millions, I just keep hoarding, sometimes downloading entire websites, it's completely out of control and I honestly don't even know what I have at this point.

You need to not do any distro hopping and preferably use mac/windows too.
Becoming a linuxfag was what forced me to finally put my shit together and organize my files just so migrating them to different OS installations would be easier.
