What was game development like in 1990-1994?
>>
Probably sucked balls. No engines, not even any good scripting languages.
>>
The smell was incredible.

computers were simpler back then and expectations were lower
it was much easier to just write your own engine
>>

>engines
Dogshit.

>scripting languages.
Mostly dogshit but also a false statement.

the golden years. everyone was white, male, and knew how to code assembly.

both of these were false statements. not only the scripting languages existed already, the engines did as well

SNAILCAT GALORE

I imagine RockStar Studios had a bunch of kids coding GTA Vice City etc. must have been a fun environment, no women in the workspace so they could say whatever they wanted, and that is reflected in the game

The good:
>Hardware was simpler
>Expectations were lower
>Relatively easy to make something novel
The bad:
>Development environments were extremely barebones
>Hardware was so slow you had to optimize like crazy
>Supply chains were bad, a publisher with good connections wasn't optional
In a survival of the fittest the 90's were definitely better at weeding out the incompetent.

I had sex because I couldn't play online and girls had to talk to you IRL if you put them into a corner.

All true. But they still managed to churn out some off the best vidya kino of all time.

Me and my girlfriend (now wife) LOVED the gold box games collection.

Magic experience actually.

It was a different time.

On 1990-1994 era PCs, you could get away with coding in C/Pastal. On 3rd/4th generation consoles, you were generally relegated to coding in pure assembly language; the hardware was too limited to do otherwise.

People raced as to whoever can make a polygon texture rasterizer use the least cycles. The white paper version was 40+ instructions, someone eventually got it down to like 9 x86 instructions, but he heard someone else did 7 so he got it down to 6. He later found out that nobody got it down to 7, his co-workers were just fucking with how obsessed he was.

Then the 3dfx voodoo came out and invalidated all of that.
