i think industrialisation and electrification have made our lives comfortable enough to allow for spending way more time on research and development over just working to live. things really snowballed once we didn't have to constantly think about when we'll be able to eat next

Also major reason for fast progress is also population explosion since industrial revolution, more people means more smart people looking to figure things out and invent solutions to problems, but also standardised education making village peasants learn about all the possible subjects before specialisation.
