And even now, it's mostly only for AI and cryptomining. Blows my mind most CAD software, as one basic example, still can't make good use of GPU hardware for rendering and simulations.

A 5070 Ti costs almost as much as the first PC I built in 2006. Granted the level of performance uplift since then is astronomical. With the Covid/post Covid inflation there is a premium 10-20% above standard inflation. Check the Fed inflation calculator against what you paid for your first PC build vs its equivalent cost today but you are probably better off using inflation numbers based on shadowstats. It’s closer to the actual inflation. Things aren’t nearly as bad as you think, yet. But it’s trending in the direction of getting worse and we all know the trend is your friend (don’t fight the trend).
