What's the Millenial/GenX equivalent of the COBOL/FORTRAN/R boomer? Something that's not glamorous but will always guarantee employment simply because no one else can do it.

COBOL/FORTRAN/R
The boomers are dying m8
>>
C++

And this is going away because Claude knows every programming language. You don't need to be a subject matter expert anymore, just smart enough to understand programming concepts and capable of using the overpriced LLM your company provides.

last I heard US gov was going to modernize their IT infrastructure. It's unironically over

Funny that every other boomer or gen xer winds up being totally tech illiterate in the current world over the last 25 years despite being taught these languages and using Photoshop.
>>
>>109947220
manual coding and problem solving
>>
>>109947279
Working with Pascal/Delphi on a daily basis and all I can say is that it's the world's most ugly language by far.
>>
>>109947220
Java, but it's nowhere near the point of "no one else can do it", and it will probably never reach that point.

SQLtarded comic. you don’t need an $and for this query. just age: { gte: x, lte: y }

if SQLtards were honest about their 50 year old DSL made for a completely different type of software than what we make today, they wouldn’t be SQLtards any more

It's true, try finding someone to maintain a 20+ years old JSP/F mess without breaking it.
>>
Excel and VBA

>>109948032
Maybe also this

I applied to be a cobol dev years ago because the management said their whole team was over 50 and looking to retire soon. I didnt get the job (i tried to negotiate salary to meet the minimum income requirement to be approved for rent in that city instead of commuting 2 hours a day and they kicked me out after a 2 hour office tour), and now they are trying to hire a senior cobol developer because I guess they found nobody else and couldn't convince the old guys to delay retirement
>>
It's Java, and i really don't get why people are saying other things.

Meh, it will most likely still outperform the decrepid boomer code
>>
>>109949811
Idk how true it is for government but I did learn in that office tour that mainframe system architecture for your company backend is very cyberattack resistant compared to modern backends.
>>
>>109949526
>couldn't convince the old guys to delay retirement
they got family that they want to spend their remaining years with, and management can go fuck themselves
the old guys have their priorities right

did you just wake up from a 20 year coma?
>>
>>109950085

>>109950040
I dont blame the old guys. I'm just pointing out that the company had a replacement willing to do COBOL as a start of career option, who negotiated 10% up to live in the apartment complex right beside the business, and they would rather turn that prospect away instead of even counteroffer and noe try to poach from a virtually no existent market (senior cobol developers who want to lose all their seniority and PTO to start at a new place making less).

Mobilefagging, sorry

I was gonna rebuke you by saying all that's left that uses java are horseshit gov and big corpo systems.

Then I realized you may be unto something.

dont learn
dont read books

all data is safe

electricity will always be around
owning a computer will always be a thing

If electricity ever really goes away the only useful skills will be farming and survival anyway
>>

Rock, is this true?

VB.NET is still alive and well in a lot of places that do boring stuff like back office software for medical facilities

Web apps writen in ActiveX/Flash/VBScript/ASP/Coldfusion. Yes, lots of old websites that are stuck in servers in old cabinets that need rewriting. Also moderninizing Windows 7/XP era apps to run on Windows 11 which also needs new hardware moving from SATA to NVMe storage.
>>
Perl
Also I'm constantly surprised to see ColdFusion pop up from time to time. There's an awning company near me that's trying to hire a CF programmer, which probably is due to code that's a quarter of a century old.

Fortran and R are still heavily used and cobol is said to be the banking legacy..
