Is programming in general a fools errand even if I strictly do it as a hobby? Even if the doomers are correct and getting a junior dev job becomes impossible in the near future, I'd still like to do some gamedev and other projects in my spare time.

programming is like a mental hamster wheel that keeps me from going insane. it has never provided any financial benefit to me in the nearly 20 years i have been studying it.

learning to program will almost certainly not be the most efficacious way to get a computer to do what you want when you can prompt stuff
that said, if you want to learn to program anyway, good for you, and you’ll be able to understand what your clankers spit out (at least if there isn’t too much) and you’ll be able to say “no no no, I meant…” just by looking at the code they output (for more types of code that they show to you)
