>Memory-maker Micron has warned that RAM shortages will persist into 2028, and perhaps beyond.
>Speaking on the company’s FY 2026 earnings call, CEO and company chair Sanjay Mehrotra reminded investors that Micron has already sold most of the memory it will make next year and said customers will pay “much higher prices” than they shelled out this year.
>“In calendar 2027 as well as 2028, we see demand exceeding supply,” he added. “In fact, we see greater tightness in the industry in 2027 and in 2028 versus 2026. Overall, supply-demand environment is only getting tighter.”
>“We do not have line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance.”
>Micron plans to bring new factories online in 2028 – helped by planned capex of $25 billion in the first half of its new financial year – but execs warned those facilities won’t immediately help to improve availability or ease prices.
>The CEO said demand for the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) needed in AI hardware is growing faster than it is for the DRAM used in servers. Micron is also finding ways to expand its margins for HBM, which is currently not as profitable as DRAM.

I don't know if waitfags are ever going to recover from this one.

I think they already all killed themselves.

fortunately sane people buy RAM every ten years. this is a nothingburger
>>
>person that directly benefits from everybody thinking prices will increase is predicting a price increase
damn

my tenth year was next year though

Doubtful.

It's still "cheap" enough i can buy more in case mine dies.
But it's still dire.

Aka, they're jacking up the prices on DRAM disproportionately, because they're favoring companies like Nvidia and doing AI buildouts.

DDR4 isn't nearly as bad as DDR5 prices right now. I don't know why anyone would want DDR5, save for the obvious speed advantage. Everything else about it is a downgrade - basically an abortion of server memory design.
>Controller is built into the DIMM, making it run hotter.
>Twice as fast as DDR4, making it hotter still.
>Reports of instability due to heat, having to blow cool air directly on the heatspreaders.
>Questionable longevity.
I'll wait and see how DDR6 turns out. Or, my next machine will be an APU with unified RAM, more likely.

it's hilarious how DDR5 is like $500 per 16gb in Canada, meanwhile I can buy an entire 5600x pc with 32gb DDR4 for $500

I'm genuinely considering stockpiling DDR5 and/or older components in general (rtx 3060/3070, ryzen 5 cpus) because I'm scared of my current hardware breaking and not being able to afford the price hikes. I wish I had bought HDDs before they shot up but that ship has sailed
