I have here an old HP Z420 WORKSTATION from 2012 which has 44GB DDR3 installed and an EVGA GTX 1060 6GB (next post picrel). I used to use it to run Mint and play games but somehow it broke during a software update or whatever, and I abandoned it and just used my laptop out of mere laziness... part of me is curious about using it as a home server, something more utilitarian... but I don't know how to do that exactly... Can /g/ give me some a playbook or some ideas as to what to do with this, if it were yours?

I'd maybe put the parts in a smaller, more ventilated chassi and then use it as a solid HTPC. Slap a couple HDD's in it and pack it full of movies, tv shows etc. It's what I did with my old rig from 2015. Still going strong.
>>109970229Make a nas and run services on it over your network (files, emulators, movies, git, etc), make a hometeather, host some i2p or tor websites, if you have a static public IP you could even host your own website. If the gtx is still working and you don't mind -very- slow generation you could even use it to host small local models with llamacpp or sdcpp.
could run a ton of server tasks, but the main problem with just saying "make a home server" is that it really depends on what you personally would find useful.NAS? jellyfin? homeassistant? frigate? who knows what you'd have a use for.
I have a Z400 with 48Gb and a six-core processor, similar GPU. It runs Proxmox pretty nicely and then that runs a VM with all my home server docker containers on it, a plex server, a few windows test boxes, and a game server. It's bit power hungry, is the only tradeoff, versus something like a mini desktop PC.
