>Thanks for the answer. Would you recommend a 27" or a 32" monitor for the 4k? O read that 4k + 27" can look sharper, but ideally it should be 32" or something
(Cross-reply) I recommend 27" 4K as that reduces the pixel pitch (black distance between pixels) and raises pixel density the most for the sharpest image. You can compensate for a smaller than 32" screen by simply phsyically moving it closer to your field of view but you can't do the opposite to add resolution that isn't there.

First time posting in the general. I have a question about upgrading the CPU.
>France // no budget concern, no energy limitations

My mobo is an Asus B-360 Plus that dates back to March of 2018, it's pretty much ancient at this point. Supports only DDR4 up to 2666MHz, PCIe 4.0, it even has the dual-GPU support from back when it was still a thing... It wasn't a bad choice when I bought the PC in 2019, but anyway I'm not looking for a mobo upgrade because it still does the job and I already have a full pretty strong rig.

My CPU is an i7-9700F and since I bought a 9700XT recently I'm thinking of trying to push my current build to its best potential to limit bottlenecking and so on. But it's not just for gaming because I produce music and I found also recently that launching a bunch of plugins at the same time cooks my CPU and it forces me to fucking micro my workflow...
So I checked online what CPU would be best suited, and I found that I could theoretically put an i9-9900K and just enjoy the thing... But I'm wondering because I have the mobo's user manual in front of me: it says it only supports CPUs up to i7, but *pangoly dot com* says it supports i9 according to Asus themselves (but I can't verify it myself because the mobo is discontinued from their website). Is the info reliable? I just know the socket is 1151, so it should fit, right?
If so I'm also wondering if it's just a good idea. I don't mind spending 400€ for a device, but if I gain just ~25% of performance according to benchmarks, is it really a good idea?

I checked the benchmarks, I barely know how to read this stuff. What can you tell me?
Buy or not?
>>
>>109986764

So I quickly checked the CPUs you suggested and their compatibility with all the mobos available in my country. Stuff doesn't compute, doesn't blend. I'm looking at at least 1200€ total, sure for a significant improvement, but I don't want to re-install my two OSs and backup all the software and files and all that.
I was looking for a small but sensible upgrade which is why I asked. I'm still on the verge of ordering the 9900K, I was kinda looking for somebody to push me over the edge.
>>109986981
Yeah so like I'm saying, at first glance it's not that simple at least here in France. Maybe if I search on smaller stores or in different countries, or straight up on Amazon by recouping sources and tech details.
The best in the world is not what I'm after. I try to make the most of what I've already got. But you got me on a track.
>>
>>109986764

Nah, I did some research I get where I got things wrong now. It's not a good idea to put an i9 in the B-360 Plus, the mobo will also bottleneck the CPU. It also demands a bit of tweaking, it won't work out of the box, might also have to underclock it, it would be wasting 400€
I will look for another way to modernise my rig. Thanks for caring.
>>
>>109986981
>if you cared about ms you would bouighted oled
If I have to use it for movies and games only to save on its lifespan then it's an expensive toy. I need brightness.

hey all i'm having a weird ass windows 11 bug not long after putting my new pc together, it's this bug where file explorer is totally broken. it's almost like the tab key is broken and will just cycle through whatever assignment it's on. like it'll just keep going down the list of video files in a folder for example and me pressing the arrow keys or clicking on a different file won't stop it. i also noticed that folders don't immediately disappear when deleted, and i have to refresh to make the change stay.

i thought it was the mouse or keyboard but unplugging them doesn't do anything. windows update didn't do anything, and i thought it was my corsair ram XMP mode but not really. any advice?

it also doesn't happen in pop up windows when going to save a pic in this reply box, for example too. only really in file explorer. really gets in the way of trying to move files around and whatnot

Back after considering the CPU upgrade. Anon is right, at this point why fucking bother with a 2018 mid mobo.
So what I'll do, when I can afford it, is gut my machine to replace the key parts that make it a slug.

RAM : Corsair DDR5 CL36 6000MHz
Vent: Noctua NH-U12A
Mobo: ASUS Prime X870-P
CPU: 9850X3D

Total is a bit above 1200€.
3 times the price of what I had in mind but hopefully 3 times the performance. If I sell the used hardware to the computer raccoons I can make it a sub-1000€ home improvement.
I already have a 1000W modular PSU, the wi-fi card, the case, and drives.

What do you think? Good idea?

Yeah so KLEVV is apparently the commercial brand of SK-Hynix, the well-known RAM chip manufacturer if you've ever upgraded the stock RAM of a laptop for instance, competitor of Samsung and Micron.

But I checked the Amazon reviews of the X870-P mobo I'm sighting, and apparently there's trouble with the RAM if it's not advised by ASUS. I'll have to see if KLEVV/Hynix are doable on the machine.
>>
>>109987394
if it's klevv, anon might get screwed over by dual rank 2x16gb ram. then he won't be able to giga clock it to 8000mhz cl36 on zen6/zen7 in future

Hynix ram is certified to work on all AMD boards. The only ones with ram issues are vendors that used the wrong trfc when AMD switched refresh modes (trfc2 or sb set to 1 for example) Klevv/Hynix uses the correct trfc.

How can a major reviewer get an important fact like this so blatantly wrong? An actual QD-Mini LED will have a measurably wider color gamut closer to 100% for Adobe RGB and DCI-P3, which these displays don't get close to.

Damn I went too far.

Actually the KLEVV 6000MHz aren't supported for EXPO. I'll have to downgrade the RAM a little bit, which is okay I guess.

>>109987548
Fucking AMDrones, man. I only switched teams for AMD recently, I was intel/Nvidia until both stopped being good. But the AMDrones are like that, I wonder why.
Maybe because it's the poorfag's choice and poorfags are notoriously retarded. Or it's because the shit you can do with AMD is so huge there must be some guy out there who has a random problem. But my AMDfags friends don't have any issues surprisingly enough, they run massive shitty games with dogshit hardware and it works.
>>
>>109987591

I barely understand what the fuck I'm reading now that I'm researching. I mean I get it, but I get that it's not really interesting. Crucial don't offer interesting clocking software support either.
I think I'll stick with the quality-price ratio of good RAM. KLEVV are nice.
>>
>>109987591
>it's because the shit you can do with AMD is so huge there must be some guy out there who has a random problem
Kinda the opposite.
You can be a regular user and get bit with various AMD specific issues.
I was very close to thinking about giving AMD a chance until I heard about shit from a coworker.

I almost drank the koolaid again. Last time I touched AMD (GPUs) listening to the "community' I felt like I really got bit and it almost made me quit gayming.

I swear my AMDudebro glazes this brand like it birthed his children. Can't tell what GPU he's using though, he doesn't know the model or brand... "Uhhh I think it's a 6GB but it runs Diablo 4 dude." Alright you doofus.
My brother only games on laptops but always goes for AMD for the CPU if he has the choice, and I agree.
Myself I changed GPU for a 9070XT and because it's compatible with my monitor I'm very happy with it. But I'm launching this general into orbit because it's bottlenecked by the rest of the config. So now I won't just change CPU, I'll go overkill for once, and I'll go AMD for the CPU because at this point I think Intel aren't doing a proper job and are asking too much. AMD give you an affordable premium experience.
>listening to the "community' I felt like I really got bit
I'm sorry, Anon. That's something I don't do. I just look at what the professionals show on the benchmarking sites and I follow my instinct.
First was discovering Display Port is way better than HDMI and the community said there's some multiverse shit happening in the audio/video transmission that makes it better than DP. Nevermind the fact you can run a 4K signal at 240hz for three times cheaper, "HDMI is better"...
Then it was finding out AMD has Freesync which is usual in mid-range monitors and Nvidia just don't give a shit. Now I'm using Freesync, with my shitty rig it launches games at "500fps", literally. Never read about Freesync/G-sync ever in my whole life, finding it out you have to instinctively snoop around every setting and info online by yourself.
But it's good to always think twice. Only the very recent, last AMD GPUs are worth something. Even the 7900XTX is a bit shit in my opinion.
>>
>>109987750
Always use caution when ordering from there, but I have personally never had any problem at all ever receiving stuff from Amazon themselves or a hosted shop or even a third-party seller. Or, actually...
When I say "use caution" I mean make sure the box is not damaged before opening it. Maybe ask your girlfriend to film the opening while you do. That's to make sure you can justify a complaint.
But otherwise... A friend of mine ordered a pre-built from an Amazon shop (not Amazon itself), as the shop also had a primary website but offered different and better deals on Amazon, for her first proper gaming PC. The PC came in working condition but was setup like a motherfucker, like the mobo wasn't properly encased in the machine, they said there would be a wi-fi card but it was a shitty USB dongle, and the Win11 license wasn't activated. But the thing worked and was pretty cheap. Eventually we had to put the finishing touches and it was a piece of work.
So it depends, I'd say 9 times outta 10 it's great. Especially if it's just ordering a device you setup yourself. If you order a service from Amazon it's different.
>How are warranty claims and returns handled?
I heard if there's a problem with delivery they hire a killer to wipe out the delivery guy's whole family... For returns I suppose it's correct as well. But for the warranty you'll have to look with the product's manufacturer, I don't think Amazon takes that in charge.

I have two stripped down, secondhand computers - both micro-ATX, if I'm not mistaken.

One has a A10 5800K and the other has an i7 2600K. Both should have a working, corresponding cooler. As far as memory, I have several sticks of DDR3, a few HDDs, and a couple SSDs to spare. Neither mobo supports M.2 and I only have one working, 300W PSU - the other one (750W) I gave away to and then borrowed from an old neighbor of mine, and it may be defective. I also took all the case fans from one of these two spare computers and put it into my main rig for maximum cooling.

I also still have my old R9 390 that I'm considering using to learn and practice GPU cleaning, since it may be a little bit broken (but it still outputs video and runs okay-ish).

Any cool, fun, creative, and/or useful ideas on how to repurpose one (or both) of these machines?

I can't go back to 1080p edge lit IPS after trying the TCL 27C2A even in SDR with local dimming off, I just can't. I already planned on selling my existing monitors for what pennies they are still worth.

I would just buy an OLED but I hate how dim they are and they defeat the purpose of HDR for me. But it seems to me due to availability there are just no good options on the market right now, even though I'd probably be content with daily driving the TCL right now as I was for many days in many situations.

Amazon is just a 3rd party marketplace now I wouldn't buy anything on there unless the shipper/seller is amazon directly and outside of prime day/black friday sales that almost never happens now. For CPUs they are generally still good. Coolers, fans, stuff like that is fine. RAM used to be okay but it's total scam town now I would not get ram off it any more, same with SSDs. HDDs are some of the worst because Amazon will constantly list used drives as new for some reason. GPUs forget about it, all scammers. For cases they can be okay because lots of 1st party manufacturers will list on amazon and you will be ordering with the company that built it. They are good with returns delivery is great if it's Amazon but they can also outsource to terrible companies too - if it says "Dispatches from Amazon" that just means the product was in one of their centers and they can hand it off to any delivery company they want.

Can a faulty 12vhpwr extender cause a GPU to crash?
I've been having these weird crashes with my 5080 where:
>video output stops
>fans spin to max
>windows plays the "device disconnected" beep
any time I wobble/or move the table that my PC sits on. These crashes could be caused by the smallest movement, like putting a glass down or taking off my headphones or slightly bumping the table with a chair.
I think it's my 12vhpw adapter that's causing them. There isn't enough room in the case to use the regular 12vhpwr cable that goes directly to the PSU, so I resorted to using a 90c extention cable/adapter (pic related).
What I think happens is that the small vibrations and the poor contact with the pins in the adapter make the GPU shut itself down due to wonky power delivery.
Are 12VHPWR adapters/extenders known to cause such issues? Do 90C plugs still melt or are they safer in that regard? Would another extension or a simple 90C plug be the better option?
>>

Based on the hundreds of 12vhpwr melting incidents, black screen GPU crashes is an early symptom of the cable failing to provide proper, balanced power across the six 12v pins

Direct cables are better
The problem in your case is either a damaged 12vhpwr socket on your GPU/psu or a bad rng roll on the 12vhpwr on that specific install causing unbalanced currents, usually fixable by replugging the cable again

i already played xenoblade 2, but i wanna play it at 60fps+ and use a mod to remove the localization changes, and I'll also be playing other PC videogames, i don't want to do emulation alone
>>109991892
there's patches to fix the most severe issues already, as far as i know there's one regarding the QTEs but you can make the game auto play them and you just lose a little bit of damage, also remember ddr4 and ddr5 cost the same in my cunt so i'll only be saving 180usd

Just now
>plug in GPU
>turn on PC
>flash and a pop
>no burning smell
>PC won't turn on now
How over is it for me, what are the chances that was the GPU getting fried or just the PSU? Brand new build

A flash and pop is the PSU exploding especially if the light was visibly coming from the rear of the case, but lack of smell is odd. Age of that unit?

I'm serious unfortunately

Everything is brand new. I had just put the new GPU in, the pci cables were attached correctly, I'm not sure if the actual gpu not being properly attached to the MB could cause this or not.

Any good prebuilts?

Nvidia will not be releasing more gpu's. No 6000 series is due. We'd have heard about the new faster rech by now. I knew this was going to happen so I bought a 5070ti gpu for ÂŁ830 around April

hey guys, do you think the ABS flux II from newegg is a decent prebuilt? from what i can tell the B580 should support bassically everything i want to play for the next few years.

i have a montech 903 base with a 240mm AIO on the front so i was thinking of just putting the parts from the pre built into the case.

100% the psu. Nothing else pops in a pc when overloaded, just turns off.

7800x3d on b850 is best and safest. 5050mhz is a nice round number

The GPU not being connected properly will not cause a power spike that blows a capacitor (that's usually what such pops are), a poor connection doesn't increase the draw. Maybe you really did get super unlucky with a defective PSU that blew on first activation, but this is something you're going to have to diagnose one by one. Again, it is unlikely to be *caused* by any component not being properly plugged in. Try shining a flashlight in the PSU and see if you spot anything amiss, if you can't open the thing up.

Why you people are so afraid with sticking to Ddr4. Don't worry. It's gonna last until 2032
