There certainly was an appeal to buy Cypress SPI FRAM for some time for "near" infinite writes (10^14) and low latency ~90ns whilst being non-volatile. I never bothered to combine it with my GPS modules as logger/blackbox.
By the time you get knowledgable about an interest, you realize how much better you could do it with other parts and it kills the fun.
My junk box still has enough parts for future me to tinkertranny.

>By the time you get knowledgable about an interest, you realize how much better you could do it with other parts and it kills the fun
Isn't that precisely part of the fun? Keep the scope of your projects reasonable and each time you revisit you get to implement a shitton of better solutions than the last.

I try to follow that rule, the faster I can finish a project, the less chance I cancel it
>and each time you revisit you get to implement a shitton of better solutions than the last
There is nothing worse than a perfect solution, some of my projects run for 10 years now, like wireless displays with WPA2 that get data via UDP from an orchestrator. Since I fix only details in the backend the frontend never required any fixes.

I only wanted cool projects like this anon's:
>>109886919
But I don't know a problem to have reason to buy and play with an FPGA. I'd need something that doesn't work in regular code on an MCU. Even FFT for audio visualizers is just fast enough on an esp32 or stm32. Still have a sealed Nucleo32 around here. STM32 is good for precise PWM. One day.

Cool shit, I've also got some old projects that work good enough to not warrant an rebuild, but not good enough to make me happy when using them. Part of the journey I suppose.

Ah yes, I retired a signal-cli bot that I once wrote for gas station prices.

And for hardware, there is no shame to build stuff others made:

While that's not the best for entertainment, it's why all those threads moved over there. Unfortunately a board like /g/ is just too fast, any serious discussion is necessarily slower than bait/shitpost threads, so it gets pushed to page 11. DIY being so slow is what allows for those discussions.

Motorized and automated a manual coffee grinder to live in the network, check if I'm in the wifi, and if I am it grinds my coffee in the morning when so it's fresh when I wake up.
Currently working on a cocktailbot and a wristwatch, which will be the first pcb design I've ever done rather than soldering onto perfboard.

That seems useful, I get why it tastes better not shelving it the night before and how it saves time in the morning. Automating daily tasks that steal time was often recommended to me by others as top tier project.
>Currently working on a cocktailbot

>That seems useful, I get why it tastes better not shelving it the night before
I also happen to love the smell of freshly ground coffee in the morning. Unfortunately since then I've got a better machine which does all the grinding and measuring for me (I just press a button) and is also much faster, so I rarely use it anymore, but I used it for a few years.
>Automating daily tasks that steal time was often recommended to me by others as top tier project.
If you have something like that, then sure. But I find that it can also trap you in a sort of grindset/hustle mindset where everything has to justify itself with productivity gains. I like having a few projects that don't really have a useful application, it's either just for shits and giggles or something you appreciate for itself.
>Shame I am a teetotal apart from other recreational things, i never drink or smoke
Probably a healthier way to live. To be fair I don't actually drink regularly, I'm a social drinker, so only with friends. But I wanted to build the bot, and expose a rest api to the local network and then have a companion local webpage that you can deploy from phone or pc where people can log in and "order" cocktails. The bot side will be pretty boring though, might even get away with a simple ESP8266, some motor controls, feedback switches, a few sensors. But I figured it might be fun when you have some people over or at a party or something.
>Oh that is a hard project, linking you this
That looks really cool. Mine will be in an analog watchcase, my main issue is battery life and that I want a small electroshock circuit, which makes battery life even worse. I don't really need it to do any smartwatch stuff, I had two and never really used either for anything but reading the time. Ideally I'd even have an analog watchface, but getting the gearing right for that is a massive pain in the ass and repurposing an existing one usually interferes with the circuitry around.
>>
>>110004330
I will reply more later but you might be aware of round displays already on ali, small ones for watches exist too. 5" / 12 cm is already worthy of a small pedestal on a cupboard.
I lack the skills though to integrate small displays. some may even have touch which is probably the point with the large ones as well.
Hope I can reply more later
>>
>>110004373
I'm aware of them, iirc they use a square input for the image and it cuts off the corners, which is a little weird, but they do seem neat.
They aren't an option for the watch though, too high power draw. If possible I want to have something that lasts a substantial amount of time on a single charge, so LCD will likely be my screen of choice. I never liked the idea of having a watch I need to charge each night or something like that.

>Mine will be in an analog watchcase, my main issue is battery life and that I want a small electroshock circuit, which makes battery life even worse.
Indeed a difficult project, especially with high voltage near ESD sensitive parts. To wake you or something more fun? Charging a DC capacitor for one burst shock is more practical than a transformer for constant AC.
>>110004636
>Ideally I'd even have an analog watchface
>so LCD will likely be my screen of choice
Oh that will be hard to source, surely it will exist, but have you considered just sourcing casio watch replacement LCDs?
Maybe driving them is easy.
>I find that it can also trap you in a sort of grindset/hustle mindset where everything has to justify itself with productivity gains
Oh I avoid life optimization projects. My life cannot be optimized due to non-faked diagnosed ADHD. It is not fun, and it is not a superpower at all. 90% of the time it irritates me.
Often people have cool planners and time schedules that simply do not apply to my perception of how time passes.
> But I wanted to build the bot, and expose a rest api to the local network and then have a companion local webpage that you can deploy from phone or pc where people can log in and "order" cocktails.
Yeah I like that, maybe connect it to a mini fridge with juice containers.
I think a peristaltic pump with medical grade silicone tubes allows you to pump liquids safely. They need replacing though when they get brittle. I worked in the chemical industry and labs.
A few rollers and you are good. Do you have an arm for the bot?
I failed at getting servos work with a decent torque, a very expensive hobby to get into robotics. My advice if you want to hear it: Use a conveyor belt for the drink glasses.
I might reply more again later. It's ADHD related. Mind's already spent again off meds.

I wanna get into food prep, anyone got silicone molds that are good in the freezer that won't give me 3 different cancers?
>>
>>110005769
silicone/teflon usually tolerates up to ~240°C
if you worry about volatiles that cause cancer, bake them out in an oven at 180°C for 40 mins
usually teflon (safe itself) carries more volatiles (organ damage/cancer) from production and is of more concern
since you probably lack an outdoor oven with an extension cord crack your windows open

>To wake you or something more fun?
A bit of both. The original idea was just to mostly imitate a pavlok, which was a indiegogo in 2014 (fuck I'm old) about wearable that would shock you to break your habits. Apparently it's a success seeing as they're still around and have like 3 or 4 products now. Somehow that concept seems to have stayed in the back of my mind and fermented and I always wanted to have a watch that would show the time but also be able to vibrate and give a small electric shock. I had other features in mind, but LCD screen plus high voltage capacitor circuit is already complex enough for a first pcb project.
>Oh that will be hard to source
Finding an LCD display really isn't. Finding one that doesn't get damaged from the shock circuitry however is a different issue.
>I think a peristaltic pump with medical grade silicone tubes
That's what it's gonna be. Considered other pump types, but none are as good in terms of servicing, cleaning and food safety as peristaltic pumps. I also considered diaphragm but cleaning those is a pain.
>Do you have an arm for the bot?
Nope, not even a conveyor or anything. I have a V0.5 which is made of wood, with a printer like belt-driven conveyor and using analog shot dispensers (those in bars that dispense exactly one shot) with some servos, but it's a piece of shit, constantly breaks and doesn't actually add any advantage. It'll just be a station with a weight sensor that you put your cup under. Maybe some nfc reader to associate cups at most, but probably not even that.
I was also interested in a robot arm as an unrelated project, but that'll either use nema17 steppers, which have shit torque, or I'd have to use nema23 motors which would quickly be expensive for a pure hobby thing, mostly to play around with inverse kinematics and matrices and such.

They will increase the eu cuck tax further november 1, so if there's something you forgot to order before the initial cuck tax back in summer and you actually do need order now. I'll order a couple of fans for an old laptop that I need, fu eu.
>>
>>110007507
What is it now? Like a higher VAT or what?
The 3€ flat rate increase fucked my electronics purchases sadly. I don't really care anymore at this point, that alone was the deadly thrust.
>>
>>110007653
another 2-3 euro per item category called "handling fee" (translated from my language), which is pretty funny since the postal service here already take a "handling fee" of like 18 euros per fucking package since the cuck tax was introduced. I wouldn't order either if I didn't need to, I thought I ordered everything I could think of I needed the next few years but missed getting a couple of spare fans for my old reliable laptop, changed to my last spare this summer for it.
>>
>>110007727
I mean it doesn't change much because I'm not buying shit anyways, but that's good to know. FML this hobby and my electronics hobby are dead unless I save up for a large mouser order now.
Each order now costs +(3n+2)€ with n being the amount of categories of items.

https://taxation-customs.ec.europa.eu/customs/eu-customs-reform_en is the link about it, their guidance is 2€ handling fee, though that's up for national discretion.
