IIRC it wasn't built to handle modern displays and ports and all of that. So many things were kludgy and barely worked. It was easy to see that this would be an issue that increasingly affected things so a replacement was deemed necessary.

It was real. Screen locking on X11 was a joke. The locker was basically a fullscreen app. On Wayland it's a proper locking mechanism that won't show your desktop if the locker process crashes.

Not even remotely. The actual reason was muh security it's le old. And here we are: wayland nowhere near usable to this day, all remote desktop solutions stopped supporting linux because it's impossible to make it work on wayland.
