I think the world and internet would still suck with or without smartphones. Undesirables were going to come online no matter what. This is not at all true. We only started caring about privacy after smartphones. Before that privacy was achieved mostly through just obscurity. Desktop OSes had no actual sandboxing and any program was given full access to the system except maybe to system critical files. Security and privacy was mostly an after thought, implemented on it and was duct tapped on it in most cases. This is why Linux and even Windows fails to implement basic sandboxing features for their new app installation formats like flatpak and such that smartphones had or ages.
