/iemg/ Dogma Check
Tired of the hivemind? Here’s your prescribed sanity dose:

>Crinacle is not your priest.
Rankings are a guide, not divine scripture. Your ears > his spreadsheet.

>Harman and JM-1 ≠ perfect.
It’s a preference curve, not a law of physics. Some genres need deviation.

>Chi-Fi isn’t magic.
Great value, yes. Immune to QC issues and hype cycles? Nope.

>Graphs are not sound.
They don’t show staging, dynamics, or fit. Use your ears, not just squigs.

>BA ≠ metallic, DD ≠ perfect.
Implementation matters more than driver type. Always has.

>Meme sets aren’t the whole hobby.
If it’s not shilled 24/7, it might still be good. It's highly encouraged to form an original opinion.

>Disagreeing ≠ cope or deaf.
Let people like what they like without foaming at the mouth.

>Loud posts =/= smart takes.
Confidence without experience is just noise. Show graphs, impressions, or both.

>Cognitive dissonance.
When you're presented with a truth that threatens your entire perception of the world around you, your brain will simply refuse to process it.

This has been your scheduled break from pos groupthink.

The first IEM I tried for this is a TWS IEM, going beyond the built-in EQ was more of an extra thing after implementing all the ANC/codec/voice prompt settings so it could sound the same everywhere (no custom voice prompts, that's actually locked down)

guess i'll make a recommendation request. my soundmagic e80cs just broke. i'm probably just gonna buy another pair, i've been using them for 8? 10? years and i like them well enough + they have a mic, but i figured i'd see what there is nowadays

>budget
60-80 cad
>intended use
general usage. i'm not an audiophile so i don't care if i can hear the guitarist's slapping balls and pinpoint their location. just normal usage (music, games, on my phone and my pc, etc.)
>frequency response
pic related. this is for the e80d but i assume it has the same as the e80c since the only difference is the connector
>past gear
like i said, soundmagic e80cs. i liked them a lot, good range imo. right amount of bass and good highs. they sounded a bit duller/muddier on my pc than on my phone. i assume that's resistance shenanigans (that i don't really understand) but i'm not getting a dac so i lived with it
>additional request
this is probably an impossibility since it seems like most iems don't have one at all but i'd prefer a mic on them since i don't have a separate one and of course half the time i'm just talking to my friends on discord

thanks in advance

If you want to keep using tws, then I'd recommend budget sets that have cheaper build than the big brands but sound as good, and in most cases a lot better. Check out moondrop space travels, puddings, etc. I own the space travels and I like them better than my airpods pros. My airpods, airpod bros, and momentum buds all died within a few years, I could've gotten 10 space travels during that time.
>>
>>110042254
+1 for providing a graph, the Moondrop Chu 3 graphs very similar from sub bass to 6k, then looks like smoother treble after. I'd recommend you check that out. Although I don't have the Chu 3, I have the Chu 2, which is similar in design, and I can vouch for the build quality which is stellar, the shell is small and comfy. You won't run into any oxidiation issues since you live in Canada.

Heyo, I don't quite understand what IEMs are. Are they fundamentally just better earbuds? I normally use over-ear headphones (currently have AKG K371), but I need something more portable that still has good sound and I don't want wireless lithium bombs.

I was thinking of getting the CrinEar Daybreak from the shopping guide (based on budget and aesthetics desu). Is the cable they come with short-ish (1-1.5m since I couldn't find it listed)? I'd be using them with a HiBy Digital M500.

>100-200€ budget
>listening to Pop, Rock, Electronic, Alternative etc on the go
>only relevant previous gear is the aforementioned AKG K371 and I really like the sound

Also I prefer not fucking with an EQ if possible, shit just needs to sound "about right". Are the Daybreak a good choice?

>I don't quite understand what IEMs are. Are they fundamentally just better earbuds?
Basically, instead of shit like pic related, which is designed to cover the ear canal from the outside, IEMs are designed to go inside the ear canal. External noise isolation is inherently better, while the potential sound quality is also better because you don't have to compensate for the disadvantages of a design that sits loosely outside the ear canal.
>>
7Hz Salnotes Zero 3 when?

Neutral sound. Depending on your HRTF around 6-8 KHz, it'll either satisfy you and turn out a bassless dogshit. For me it's awesome, I love it.

Since there's no hpg, I'm looking for a new pair of headphones because the Superlux I'm currently using sounds like ass. Unfortunaly, using IEMs for prolonged periods of time is painful for me no matter how much time I spend getting used to them
>budget is up to $400
>intended use are music (pretty much all genres and subgenres: grunge, breakbeat, folk rock, orchestral and chamber music, ambient, DSBM, EDM, shoegaze, noise, pop, nu metal, trip hop, etc.), games, movies
>tried and enjoyed EM6L and Supermix4 (minus the pain), looking for something similar or more fun sound-wise, with a decent but not overwhelming amount of bass

I have some Tanchjim Origins; might anyone have information on what kind of filters should be used for replacement in them? The swappable nozzles have both a metal mesh and some thin cloth-like black filter beneath it. I kind of fucked up said thin black filter thing when I was cleaning the mesh. Not sure if I'm supposed to replace the wire mesh either, though it's intact.

Question, do any of the USB DACs like Fosi, SMSL, Douk, etc, allow for their optical inputs to show up as a recording device on your PC? Or are the optical inputs just internal inputs you can switch the device to?

I'm looking for something that allows me to record from an optical line, but while I'm at it I may as well get a decent DAC if one can do that. If not I'll just get some $40 startech or something.

Ok Fiio Snosky Melody works well. The only annoying thing but its minor is that it doesnt control volume directly on PC like TSN Pearl would do apparently. So volume buttons works anyway just not visually. Another annoying thing is that i had to adjust best settings via Android, but I only need to do it one time so its okay .PCs web interface have only PEQ with no other settings and PC control application is for Chinese only like wtf, unsure if even have more settings.
Now i will wait for sale in November and get me some Planar IEMs as well.

Yep I had to check up via AI what it meant and its better. Just feels weird when I dont see it changing in UI, but it doesnt matter in the end, so far I am impressed but this little thing. Someone told me i wont notice difference with my starfields but idk it does feel cleaner and have less noice compared to hyperx shit.
I had to ask AI for best settings also

High Gain depends on your headphones

IEMs / low-impedance headphones (32Ω or lower) Low Gain (less noise floor, less hiss at low volume)
Over-ears (150–300Ω, like HD490s, HD600s) High Gain (needs the extra drive)

I changed to Low Gain

DAC Work Mode: Class H Class AB

This is the big one. Multiple reviewers and a measurement site agree:

Class AB = tighter bass, cleaner treble, more natural
Class H = boomy bass, hazy treble, and one measurement site found it "performs very poorly and is very unstable" on this specific device (degradation that changes over time)

Changed to AB, have no clue about this shit, but I think this is specific modes for this dongle

Rest was good on default apparently
There was DRE but its off have no idea what that shit is

the >$200 you'll spend on Timeless 2 will give you an advantage but it's so small, barely noticeable and won't be "$200 more" sounding, if that makes sense. If you want to spend that much, just save up for a good hybrid, but if it's a competent planar you want that punches above its price anyway, PRX and T10/pro are the best places to start since a $200-300 planar won't be the upgrade you anticipate.

There should be sales during that time + black friday. They seem to be very lightweight also which I like since i wear IEMs longer times during PC sessions.

Yeah but starfield is DD so its a bit different also + more warmer sound, but it will be very fun to compare.

try to see if you can find one that has a low latency codec too for gaming (and for that you will likely need a dedicated bt dongle like from creative or sennheiser or fiio etc)

Personal testing and measurements. There are some very minor differences (Tanchjim filters have ever so slightly more damping) but they will behave the same if accounting for eventual clogging.

No, an apple dongle is a portable DAC. Pay attention, and work on your reading comprehension. We started at "they double as a desktop amp", which they don't. You can compromise and use them on a desktop system, but they don't double as a desktop DAC.
>>
>>110061797
If the definition is "must drive ALL IEMs" then there are no desktop DACs, since estat and last generation MEMS exist.
>>
>>110061885

By the definition you gave apple dongle is a desktop DAC.

You didn't.
>>
>>110061879

>"Getting to the desired volume"
Isn't the main issue. A dongle without physical volume control+low output power doesn't suffice because you're affecting dynamic range and resolution of the audio negatively by relying on source volume control alone.
You were told to not bring up "just raise volume" and you did it anyway as if volume alone explains away everything.
You still asked, "name 1" IEM when the point is about requirements, that different IEMs have. It's on you

>>
>>110061948
Well first you have to acknowledge that you're illiterate and failed to understand that your claim of my definition applying to an apple dongle is false, because I specifically used the word variety, which would imply multiple inputs and outputs, something the apple dongle doesn't have. After you acknowledge your failure there, we can continue to defining the properties of a desktop and portable DACs, and why a portable one, an apple dongle or a snowsky especially, isn't a replacement for a desktop DAC.

If the user doesn't need variety, he doesn't need a desktop DAC, and can use a portable one on his desktop system, and as I've already said, illiterate obtuse child, you can do that, but it doesn't mean a portable DAC doubles down as a desktop one. If that were the case, it would imply a portable DAC would be able to replace a desktop one in all situations, and there wouldn't even be a need to differentiate them linguistically, by calling one portable, and one desktop.

Audiopedophile mumbo jumbo. You have not compared them at the same volume.

I have the m21 gold and I love it. I got the cassette cases as well. They sound really good and are worth the price. You can see my post here: >>110041981

>>110062157
The only DAC I've ever returned to China was from fiio. A lot of firmware problems. And their headphones are falling apart. Haven't tried their PMPs but you can check up the forums for issues.

I have.
>>
>>110062632
You said you've never used REW so you couldn't have compared them at the same volume.
>>
>>110062642
Are you really looking for every possible reason to complain? Your transition really must have fucked up your brain, man.
>>
>>110062656
I'm looking at the people that have compared them at the same volume and they couldn't tell a $20k DAC from apple dongle.
>>
>>110062696
What's really happening is you're looking at your personal experience and assuming there's no possible alternative, for anybody else.
>>
>>110062722
You're assuming your personal experience is what you're actually hearing. A very common rookie mistake. Every beginner hears huge differences from everything. DACs, amps, cables, etc. All disappears in blind tests.
>>
>>110062740
This sort of mental gymnastics is exactly what makes you a kook.
One last time- just because you can't discern differences in imaging cues with pieces of gear doesn't mean nobody else can.
Denial isn't even the most correct word to describe your particular dilemma- it's actual cope.
>>
>>110062809
Again, just because you think you're hearing a difference doesn't mean you are hearing a difference. Sad but true. You keep trying to push a narrative that some people can hear it and some can't. That's not the case at all. Everybody can genuinely hear a difference. And completely believe it. Until they run a blind test.
>>
>>110062836
I guess you really are in denial, then. Your confirmation bias is what leads you to these embarrassing logical fallacies and you make the same mistakes every single day with them. Good luck getting out of yourself.
>>
>>110062966
"Logical fallacies" and he's talking about facts established almost 100 years ago lol.

To summarize it for you, dongle DACs, can't replace desktop DACs and he conceded.
>>
>>110063243
They can't? What there is to it besides power?
>>
>>110063259
So basically you define a desktop DAC as a DAC with two inputs so a "dongle DAC" can't replace a "desktop DAC".
>>
>>110063259
The features you have to omit due to design limitations that come with portability.
>>
>>110063289
The feature in question is the second input btw.
>>
>>110063296
Not only. But yeah they can't replace desktop DACs, otherwise desktop DACs wouldn't even exist.
>>
>>110063304
Many things exist without reason.
>>
>>110062525
I've looked and there didn't seem tl be a consensus. Lots of people have criticised their headphone lineup, meanwhile others were praisong their players to high heavens. I want the ECHO myself because it looks neat.
>>
>>110063311
This isn't one of them.
>>110063324
FiiO is a piece of shit. They require you to use virus apps and their web apps don't work. Firmware issues 24/7. Why the fuck does the fiio app need nearby devices access for a non-bluetooth dongle DAC? Fuck outta here. My KA15 just randomly resetting its settings every once in a while. Gayass fuckass shit.

Anime/J-Pop, Game soundtracks, Classical music (mostly piano)

Kingston HyperX Cloud Core. Served me for the past 10 years and is recently having connection problems with the right drivers so it's time to replace it. I guess it was good enough for me? It's clear and loud (to the point that my volume is in the 20-40 range since forever). Both of those things I value since the bulk of my use with the headphones recently is my own voice.

I am retarded regarding audio gear so I need your expert opinions anon. I saw some review in YouTube about the 7hz Zero 2 being a good all-rounder but again I'm retarded about these things.

Me personally I'm a kiwi ears cadenza enjoyer, especially with tangzu sancai tips, and especially since aesthetics are in fact very important, although I'm about to get jumped by a bunch of haters for reccing this. If you're a desktop user I wouldn't get IEMs though, because you can't wear them as long, and because they have shorter cables.
>>
>>110063663
>especially since aesthetics are in fact very important
Aesthetics are only a plus for me. Would rather have good sounding ones over aesthetics though.
>If you're a desktop user I wouldn't get IEMs though, because you can't wear them as long, and because they have shorter cables.
I probably can especially when I get in the zone during editing. Short cables aren't really an issue too since my PC is just near me. The "good" headphones are just so expensive for me atm so why not an IEM that has superior audio quality (at least that's what I keep hearing) for like half the price?

If you mean OG Cadenza, not the 2nd one then yeah that is still goo indeed.

Aight, any good alternatives? Anything woth a similar price to the M21 will do.
