I think when Sora came out, a lot of the excitement started to shift toward video generation which is built on the foundation of image generation; a lot of people are excited at the prospect of being able to generate their own movies. AI-generated still images are still a big thing if you look at the current popularity behind image generators such as Nano Banana 2.1 and GPT-Image 2.0, but a big use today is for generating reference inputs for video generators like Seedance 2.5.
If you actually want to know, it's that people were just killing time until it became possible to easily generate photorealistic naked kids doing lewd things and now most people are generating things that can't be posted online.
