That's not what I found. In the past AV1 was only able to compete with H264 in low to medium quality but now it even competes in high quality as well.

https://umigalaxy.com/explore/technology/650/099-ssim-h264-vs-av1

Actually you reminded me about this dead altchan, I was meaning to post some AV1 video there but over time I forgot about it. Might do it tomorrow.

did you try WATCHING the fucking video?
>>
The only device I have that only supports it is my first gen chromecast, so I just enabled transcoding for my user on jellyfin (its disable on everyone else) and I already converted/redownloaded everything on x265

>lossy to lossy
you just trashed your whole media server
>>
>>110043000
I transcoded like 5% or less of it, everything else was faster to just download it again.

Yes, they looked identical to the source. As I had a hard time telling the original and lossy h264/av1 video apart in a side by side comparison. Subjective testing from multiple sources agree that a SSIM score of 0.99 strongly correlates with high quality video as well.

The only thing H.264 offers is better battery life in older devices due to pretty much everything having H.264 hardware decoding. AV1 hardware decoding is already a thing on modern computers, we're all just waiting for phone companies to play catch up.

I'd wager around 2030, H.264 will be the new .DIVX and all the fancy new AV2 encoders will become stable enough to start using and getting like 90% lower bitrate over H.264 lol
>>
>>110042958
Undefeated where? In low quality movie rips on your shitty torrent tracker?
I don't know the last time when I used this codec: all the movies I download are in hevc now and being directly streamed to my devices with jellyfin or by transcoding in hevc, youtube and 4chinks are using vp9, I record my gaming in av1.

Not today, kid.
>>
>>110043185
>all the movies I download are in hevc now
unless you're downloading 4K then you're downloading slop lmao
>>
>>110043162
the fact that you're using nvenc as a baseline disqualifies you from this convo right off the bat
>>
>>110043200
Unless you're downloading unaltered bdremuxes you're downloading slop

got filtered, what you recommend for blackwell?

av1 just werks

That's what people who have a life use and it still BTFO encoding video with x264 slow. AFAIK the H.264 NVENC already achieves parity with x264 slow and AV1 NVENC is around 20% more efficient than that.

So HQ 5Mbps H.264 (encoded with x264 slow), which takes forever now becomes 4 Mbps when encoded with AV1 NVENC and takes minutes.

lol no.
>>
>>110042958
Have you been sleeping under a rock for the last decade?
The average movie encode is x265 these days

I may be misremembering but the slow present NVENC H.264 encoder was seen reaching parity with x264 slow in a video encoding test. Might have been x264 medium though.
>>
>>110043489
they can try but is never going to work due not having enough reference frames. people need to accept that realtime encode is never going to be as good. different uses. best option is to give it way more bitrate, filesize

>AV1 was only able to compete with H264 in low to medium quality but now it even competes in high quality as well.
deprecated by AV2
>>
>>110043556
AV2 hasn't had time to mature yet. This is the same reason why WebP is getting popular 2 decades after it was made.
>>
>>110043251
>That's what people who have a life use
it's literally designed to for quick real time encoding (streamers), not preservation
>>
>>110042992
yeah, AV1 is the first post-h264 codec to compete with x264 encoded h264 at highish bitrates, still not as easy to use as x264 though
>>
>>110043597
does twitch let streamers choose the encoding? because i always see x264 only
>>
>>110043578
webp is not getting popular. is being forced on everyone. that's different.

But my budget laptop from 2010 can't decode 1080p AV1 movies in real time

my 2008 laptop can. is yours an atom or something? or did you just assume it can't and haven't actually tried it?

nta the real issue i compatibility with TVs and other devices. they do struggle and may not eve support it if they are cheap brand.
>>
>>110044250
fair, it's always non-pc stuff that has the biggest issue, since they tend to depend entirely of hardware decoders and otherwise have shit cpus

-- like that laptop can't decode 1080p H.264 in hardware even. the chipset is only designed for SD H.264, only the intel ones after that one can do 1080p H.264. the software dav1d decoder is just incredibly efficient
>>
>>110043597
yeah, like pcvr streaming
h265/av1 nvenc encode like 20% faster than h264 (even on 3090), and 20% faster decode on qualcom xr2 chips (quest3). 3840x2160 at 20mbps looks great, beating nvenc h264 at 50mbps on all metrics except compability. encode time like 2ms on a 5080. so gaymers are eating good, while hoarding cucks are still stuck encoding a 5 minute video for 10 minutes.
>>
>>110044272
Linus Torvalds even called Geekbench out for that.
