Is it still the king of Linux?
Only if you're still on 15 year old hardware.

I tried out Pop OS with COSMIC last night and I really liked it. I think it's going to go places.

I don't like how the top bar can only be on the primary window and you have to install extensions to pin the dock to the bottom of the screen. It's a lot more usable after customizations, but vanilla GNOME isn't as convenient.

Which is all I want out of a distro along with letting me easily install rolling or stable apps as I see fit and respects me enough to run any command and config I want to make.My only complaint is that a lot of devs quit due to retarded tranny identity politics and it has caused the rwmaining devs to throw the towel on certain features, most notably Firefox is no longer mantained and only provided as a flatpak.>>110049125Actually this may not be the case anymore, I don't know who is to blame for this (Whether it's xorg or the i915 drivers) but I have two old low power PC's that Mint can only run in compatibility graphics mode, an N3150 and a J3060. My J3355 still works fine though, I don't get it but I no longer care, I turned those computers into tmux machines.

It's based on Debian, so just use Debian. You can use Cinnamon on Debian

I use Mint to test PCs when they don't work. For some reason Mint is better at detecting hardware automatically than other distros (even Ubuntu, despite being Mint's base) when I run them in live mode, and that helps me to identify when a component is damaged or if it was just windows shitting itself (issues with sound, wireless connections, printers and corrupt USB thumbs are the most common problems I find).
When Mint has a completely modern 2026 update, I'm there.

Wouldn't Bazzite be the best just works distro? Haven't used it personally, just asking because on paper it should be.

Mint and Clement are the "I just wanna grill" meme of Linux and every time there's a controversy about the distro it's on the software side of things without mention of identity politics.
>>110059663Bazzite works well outside of gaming too
>>110060718It's not designed to be a desktop OS, though. You use a distro like that for its purpose.

The next version (based on ubuntu 26.04 released in april) is due for christmas. that means almost all the packages in the repo will be 8 months out of day for this "new" mint releaseit is a joke distro used exclusively by clowns
>>110060923You constantly updoot your packages? I know this is bait
>>110060913Because it isn't designed for anything. Things like default programs are chosen based on whatever the maintainer feels like. It works, but you don't get anything the maintainer actually themselves maintains.Take Fedora for instance. IBM contributes both time and money to Gnome and KDE, so the interface is what they want based on the fact that they actually get to directly influence those projects. Mint makes their own interface, and maintains their own programs like Timeshift. Ubuntu modifies Gnome for its purposes and also has significant influence on Gnome apps (updates to those apps revolve around Ubuntu LTS releases). The actual desktop experience is dictated by the maintainer.Bazzite is just whatever projects like KDE are putting out at the moment. If the maintainers are doing something, it's usually something related to library compatiblity so games and streaming works properly.
