changing a setting isnt maintenance, this makes zero sense. and remotely adjusting temperature from internal sensors instead of making it automatic is also, nonsense

Hackers activated a 'defrost' mode that heats up the fridge for when it requires cleaning or something.

why would it need to be remote activated instead of it being a button for the user? the cost to implement is the same and actually cheaper for physical since the store doesnt have to pay a fee

it just makes no sense
>>
>>110053223
Possibly because defrosting takes multiple hours, they can activate the defrost before they even send the maintenance people out.
But, you know, if the fridges need maintenance you could have the defrost mode button/switch in an obvious place that you could tell staff at the supermarket to activate over the phone instead.
>>
>>110053240
okay so if its automatic like that it doesnt need to be on the internet at all and would be 5 lines of code

you are a fucking LLM

Modern supermarkets need an IT backend these days connected to the internet. All the digital price stickers are constantly updating in real time. Also self checkout and security cameras.

>>110052816
In Europe, it is a *very* common thing for the owners of franchised stores to set their refridgerators to the lowest possible setting they can get away with (meaning lowest amount of cooling) to save money.

This obviously causes the quality of food to degrade, and customers go elsewhere.

So having a central control panel controlled by the HQ actually does make sense in that environment.

I actually worked on one of the more popular frameworks these things used.

I never understood why they were connecting them to the internet either.

The ones that aren't will survive, same for payment. Fully contactless businesses will get raped.

Industrial sabotage. The people who made the decision were intentionally trying to make the system vulnerable for later attack. They would never admit it but this is exactly the kind of thing you would do if you wanted to quietly sabotage a country without any possibility of getting caught.
Or gross incompetence I guess. The effect is the same and such people should be in prison.

here in the netherlands simultaneously our biggest supermarket chain has been hit by (most likely) a cyberattack as well. entire website/online orders or services has been out for 2 days straight now with no updates on it coming back soon
>>
>>110053300
>I never understood why they were connecting them to the internet either.
It's the trend for everything these days.
Probably partly sold on "monitoring" your refrigerators so that they can "alert" you to any "problems" with them before the staff even notice.

Look, they're already fucked even if you have cash and they have cash, because you still need to ring up the item somehow and track what stock you sell.
The store will just shut itself rather than deal with all the extra work to do that shit.
