random posts about emulators and compilers? at least half of them are bots/agents

one, bots can be easily trained to make legitimate looking posts - they're complex enough topics for most people not to have enough domain knowledge to question such posts in case any factual errors occur in them
two, those two topics have been carefully selected to catch the eye of a very specific audience - people who might have a shallow, if any at all, interest in programming but high interest in video games and/or computer science. and why those topics? because they tend to be the favorites of people that are the easiest to then distract with other outright off-topic posts and basically cyber-groom them
another purpose of these posts is to create an interest vacuum where people legitimately interested in programming have nothing actually on-topic to engage with: the bot posts are just artificial thread filler with only surface-level relation to programming

a-hah. thanks for the clarification

on another note:
TOORING BTFO PT 2-

i revised the model and i came to the conclusion that the break-state is actually a primitive
every loop can be expressed through one
this gives a series of branches, an iterator variable, and a break condition to be satisfied.
that condition is the iterator variable acquiring a value that would satisfy the break condition (break-state)

this is exactly the collatz conjecture, but generalized

and afaik the only argument against it is "but tooring said nuh-uh"
except tooring is wrong and retarded + a homofag so gay he commited kys over mean words
>>
im not sure ill ever be able to figure out an algo to figure out generalized collatz
but i think i have a framework which could be used to formally prove the halting of a loop

its literally a series of numbers, and one would have to figure out whether any of the numbers in such a series can satisfy the break-condition

tooring is a faggot. he should shut the fuck up and get bullied.
the real final boss is generalized collatz
from what i figured out, it is the actual essence of the halting problem

ive discussed this in the previous thread

it boils down to the fact you can short circuit the contrarian program with exit-like routines

no such limitation on a computer.
the theory just doesnt match reality

the whole argument of propagating the properties of a turing machine into engines that could simulate it is fucking retarded

It doesn't matter that the tape head only moves by one position. Random access doesn't change what you can compute, it just makes computation faster. Here is a paper that proves that RAM vs Turing compute the same class of functions, so it is still undecidable.

Is anyone interested in trying my "convert data to images and back" scripts?

You need Linux, with Festival text to speech (the scripts use its scheme interpreter) and Imagemagic (used for converting ppm to png and back)

Here's a rar archive containing the scripts. And here's the decoder script (for festival's scheme interpreter) that you can use to extract the data from it. (Use imagemagic to convert the png to ppm first.)

(define (get-line port)
(let ( (out "") (s " ") (i 0) (b (getc port)) )
(while (and (not (eqv? nil b)) (not (eqv? b 10)))
(aset s 0 b)
(set! out (string-append out s))
(set! b (getc port)))
out))

(print "filename of ppm to recover data from?")
(define f (fopen (read) "rb"))

(define o (fopen "recovered_file" "wb"))

(get-line f) (get-line f) (get-line f)
(fread (* 3 5) f)

(define (recover)
(let ( (data-present (getc f)) (dummy (getc f)) (byte (getc f)) )
(if data-present
(begin
(if (eqv? data-present 1)
(begin
(putc byte o))))
(begin (fclose o) (quit))))
(fread (* 3 5) f)
(recover)
)

It literally does not. That's what the paper shows. You don't gain magical computation powers from jumps. And universal computation is universal computation. If something is undecidable in one system of universal computation. It is undecidable in all of them. Undecidability is a proven non-existence result, not an empirical hypothesis, so no observation about jmp behavior can bear on it.

Computers are not turing machines, they have limited memory and therefore are a finite state machine.
You can prove a Collatz program halts because it either halts or it runs out of memory (and halts).
For an arbitrary program, you can prove that any loop either halts or runs out of memory or halts/hangs based on user input (which is constrained by memory so it is finite).
That being said, the 2^N bit state explosion makes in unfeasible to verify it on a general way.

>>110066155
A universal turing machine can simulate a finite state machine.
A jmp is just tape scanning until it finds the label.
Universal turing machines are not real.
>>
>>110066210
Okay, so simple, then. So in >>110065618 I gave you two fucking proofs. One that generalized Collatz is undecidable because it is total. Another, where they derive that decidable <=> total, not going through fooken tooring. Q.E.D. you are wrong and shut the fuck about Turing finally, go back to your Cnile intrinsics.

>because you cannot simulate jmp
You literally can though. Again, the linked paper demonstrates this. The tape head moving one space at a time, doesn't mean you can't just repeatedly move it until you find the address you wanted to jump to. Jump is just faster than tape scanning.

>>110066193
>bw a turing machine and a computer- they are not
>bc jump.
Universal computation is universal computation. You don't gain the ability to compute more things, just because you can jump faster than a tape scan. The only difference is jump is O(1) and a tape scan is O(L) where L is the number of cells in the searched region.

You're not doing anything the Turing machine can't, jump is just faster.

wow
im too drunk to fully enter 4d but i still can dip my toes in your river
this makes sense but i believe youre pulling in another angle

a turing machine should have the ability to skip instructions to simulate a jump
as far as i understand things
it does not
you can only have
"move left"
or "move right"
but it has to be written on the tape
so the program would need to be precomputed
in order to be able to simulate a jump

bc in a jump youre just skipping instructions...
as far as i understand things. correct me if im wrong
>>
>>110066234
>A jmp is just tape scanning until it finds the label

>>
>>110066256
>doesn't mean you can't just repeatedly move it until you find the address you wanted to jump to.
but you would have to overwrite the program that lies in your path
thats the thing
you would need to have continuous "move left" or "move right" instructions

you just cant.

You don't have to overwrite anything. The process is this:

1. Read N from the program-counter region.
2. Go to the start of the program region.
3. Scan record by record, at each one comparing the stored addr: field against N.
4. Stop when the stored address matches N.

Basically, instead of jumping to a specific address instantly, you're walking the tape until you find the address that matches. It is equivalent to a jump, just much slower (O(1) vs O(L)).

Suppose a program H exists that can look at any program and correctly answer whether it halts or runs forever.

Build a new program D that uses H on itself. If H says "D halts", D loops forever. If H says "D loops forever", D halts. Now ask what H says about D. If H says "halts", D loops and H was wrong. If H says "loops", D halts and H was wrong.

Either way H is wrong, contradicting the assumption that H is always correct. So H can't exist: no program can decide, in general, whether an arbitrary program halts. That contradiction is the whole proof. D always does the opposite of H's prediction about D, so a perfect halting-decider is impossible.

>for starters: tooring is obsolete bc thats not granular enough
>he called everything programs, but now we have programs and functions
The programs/functions distinction is organizational sugar, not a change in computational power. A function is just a program you can call. A program is a function you run at top level. Both compile down to the same machine model. The halting argument doesn't care what you call the units. H examines any computational procedure, function or program, and D is itself such a procedure.

>H CAN CALL EXIT
H's job is to return an answer, halts or doesn't. However H terminates, D only needs that information. There is no arrangement of exit() that lets H escape, because the contradiction is about the answer H gives, not the mechanism by which it returns.

>WHICH FUCKS D WHICH IS CONTRIVED TO BEGIN WITH
D is deliberately contrived. That's the entire point of a proof by contradiction. D doesn't need to be useful, it only needs to be constructible, and it is. if H exists, you can build D by calling H and inverting the result.

>AND THEN ON TOP OF THAT A COMPUTER WORKS DIFFERENTLY
No it doesn't. Jump doesn't get you anything except a speed boost.

>i have empirical data
>thats much stronger than a theory
Undecidability is not an empirical claim, it's a proof that a certain program cannot exist. The theorem isn't predicting test outcomes, it is proving no H can be correct on all inputs, and D is the specific input that breaks any candidate H.
>>
>>110066730
>H's job is to return an answer, halts or doesn't. However H terminates, D only needs that information. There is no arrangement of exit() that lets H escape, because the contradiction is about the answer H gives, not the mechanism by which it returns.
No, he's just trying to be crafty little shit —write D to get information from the return value, but then have H return it with `exit()`, thinking it means CHECKMATE TOORING, while in fact he's just being an idiot, because a single `fork()` can fix the problem. But apparently he program in C and does not know how fork works? ell-mao

I have a curiosity.
Would there be any benefit to making every single program use no more than 128 bytes(16 x 8 general purpose registers) by constantly streaming data or would this just end up as a bottle neck?

>>
>>110067491

i was thikning:
128 bytes to own a system then stream from an ip
but maybe thats impossible
thats what i thought about though
128->own->stream a whole fucking environment, or just dl and install, then nuke
if you have sudo you have everything
but you would be supposed to do everything in 128 bytes
>>
>>110067342
Here's what I think.
The benefit would be no cache misses, so no waiting on data or instructions to come from memory. Your CPU would be able to run without stalling at all.
But in order to do that you need all of your instructions and data arranged so that it can be streamed into your CPU, which means that you either need your program to be entirely static, or you need another system that is organizing the instructions and data to feed into your CPU, and the latter is essentially what computers are already trying to do.
