I get the feeling that the KDE codebase is too much for KDE developers to manage. Imagine 30 years of legacy code across 6 major versions of the Qt library, all written in C++. Maybe KDE is really just the testing ground for Qt pretending to be a DE.

Does anyone actively rely on SELinux to prevent exploits and such? For example SELinux on Fedora helps prevent Podman (i.e. Docker) containers from exploiting each other. Is SELinux worth migrating to Fedora for?

I can, but Fedora has a ton of pre-configured policy. This has to be manually done on other distros, not to mention relabelling the filesystem. Basically no sane person would do this.

I just use AppArmor which is simpler to configure without needing to switch to Fedora.

There's a setting in the options. If it doesn't work (didn't for me), you can find the icon somewhere in some github and add it somwewhere to your linux icons folders and set it from there.
>>
>>110079685
What are you watching them in? It's far more likely to be a driver bug or issue with the player you're using?
>>
>>110079662
Apparently AppArmor isn't as comprehensive as SELinux. For example it protects the host from Podman containers, but not the containers for each other.
>>
>>110079762
I don't know if Podman has AppArmor integration or not but Docker does. It confines each container.
>>
>>110079772
Fair enough but Podman is inherently more secure than Docker independent of SELinux/AppArmor. So I'm avoiding Docker.
>>
>>110079780
How does Podman work with SELinux exactly, anyway? I imagine it needs privileges to modify the policy (same as Docker's AppArmor) so it's useless if running unprivileged anyway.

6.8 fucked up panels for me on multiple monitors.
For starters, the workaround I was using to put notifications on my second display (removing the notification icon from my primary display entirely) no longer works and I'm stuck with notifications on my main screen.
Secondly, hitting super doesn't open the menu on the focused screen anymore, and it's incredibly inconsistent with how it behaves when I try to fix it. At first I couldn't get it to open the menu on my MAIN screen at all, so I removed the panels on my other screens and readded them, then it stopped working on my third screen instead. Now I have it so it only ever opens on my main screen no matter where I'm focused, which is an improvement, I guess.

Cringe, and I hope they fix this in 6.8.1.
>>
>>110083116

>>
>>110083255

many computer users run a modifiesd version of the gnu system avertyday withut realizing it, and they're all gay lolololololololoolol.

thorugh a peculiar tune of eevnets, the verison of gnu which is widely sued today is oftne called "linux," an dmany of its users are not getting laid xDDDDDDDD

there ereally is a linxu, and these people are using it, but it is just shitty looooooooool

linux is the kernel: the perogram in the sytem that allocates the mahcines resources towards crahshing xDDDDD

the kernel is an esential part of an aperating styem, but useless by itself. it's also uselees when it's not by itself because linux sucks amirite.

linux is normally used in comibnation with no drivers, becaue linux has no drivers. (amirite guiz)

In a bit of a pickle. I tried installing cachyos on my rog ally, but somewhere along the line it failed and left me with a borked install that can't boot. The bios is locked and I forgot the password, so the only way I was able to boot into the live usb was by using windows recovery features. Now I can't change the boot order. I think I need to remove the internal ssd from my rog ally, and use a live usb to wipe it. From there I should be able to try installing again. This raises a few questions
Can I install cachyos while the ssd is in an external enclosure, and then put it back in the Ally. What would I.need to change on the install before putting it back in? I assume there's probably some config somewhere that I would need to change
/dev/sda to /dev/nvme, but where?

The lack of backcompat is why Linux is so fast. I don't want 99 gorillion gigabytes worth of runtimes and compatibility layers hogging up my RAM.

>>110089715
The core is intentionally small. Under 50K LoC in total. That's the entire planned userspace plus the abstracted API. The entirety of it would be less than glibc alone.
>>
>>110089739
Wouldn't applications still need to install the needed dependencies?
>>
>>110089747
Yes, but applications would include their own dependencies that are relative to them. Nothing from the userspace would be included. So the base OS is stable.

TL;DR for /g/

Linux doesn't have a technical problem, it has a management problem. Every part that works (kernel, Mesa, Android, the Deck) works because a company pays people to do the boring work, and every part that's a mess is a volunteer hoping glibc doesn't change this week. So the fix is obvious: a dozen or so small companies of five-ish people each, all sharing one tiny core with a stable API and a ten-year compatibility promise, each selling a brandable OS to hardware makers who need one but don't want to be OS businesses. Windows apps and Android run through Wine and Waydroid sitting next to the core, security wrappers know which subsystem each binary belongs to, and the whole thing stays small enough that five people can actually maintain it. I wrote it all down, the design is done enough to argue about, and there's exactly one problem left: somebody has to actually start the first company. That somebody isn't me. I'll gladly keep presenting ideas and solutions, but I don't want the responsibility of running a company, and the whole plan dies at step one unless a real company gets made and made to work. So if you're a founder with a hardware idea and an OS headache, or you just want to be the guy who built the Red Hat for people who play games and use laptops, step up. Otherwise enjoy dual booting.

There is much more to it, but this is the best TL;DR with some compromise on detail. Read the actual article for proper detail.

made this one command chain that searches a bunch of sites on new tabs after the active tab, but if you returned to the same active tab and searched something else, the 2nd wave of tabs neatly opens past the 1st wave
now all the new options will either open the 2nd wave after the 1st wave, or will open those forced new tabs right at the end of a 40 tab chain

IMO when doing the whole installation using basic terminal tools the hard part is the boot process, the thing that involves hardware related tricks + whatever nonsense your bootloader does (you can pick between GRUB, LiLo and systemd-boot (or picrel if you are hackerman enough)).
The rest is all easy: partition a drive, make up a filesystem and pour a Linux system in that filesystem.

Which desktop environment should I use if I want to access a linux system regularly with remote desktop from an android device?
Is unity with it's touch design actually the answer here? Or does KDE do the trick well enough?

I'm in charge of printing all the notation for my orchestra and by now most of our stuff has been digitized by me. But I'm becoming to lazy to get up every time someone is missing something and I want to just use my tablet to use the xerox workcenter in the next room.
Printing from android is insanely ass and ubuntu works right out the box for the printer drivers so I want to keep working with that.
Alternative suggestions are welcome. No I won't just use terminal and ssh because others will have to do it too when I'm not around.

Ok, turns out this fucked behavior is because it thought the panels on displays where the super key wouldn't open the menu were actually on a different display. In my final setup, only the main display had a working super key, and after reboot... the other two displays lost their panel.
Where could they be? You ask. Well when I went to edit the remaining panel, the other two appeared stacked on top of it in the edit space (I assume they were stacking outside of the edit space).
FORTUNATELY clicking on them and changing their position back to the other displays has fixed all the behavior and everything is working again... For now.

Personally I see zero purpose in a display manager, you don't even need it to lock the session.
I just have this in my ~/.zprofile
# If running from tty1 start Plasma
[ "$(tty)" = "/dev/tty1" ] && /usr/lib/plasma-dbus-run-session-if-needed /usr/bin/startplasma-wayland && exit

In both cases all that happens when I boot is I put in my login details and press enter, I see no point in adding a layer of problems to the process.
>>
>>110093444
Same. It makes a bit more sense on my laptop since I do usually boot straight into the desktop environment, but on my desktop sometimes I won't even boot into KDE and will just leave tmux or whatever running in the tty.

GNOME Shell is the actual desktop shell (the clue is in the name)
Mutter is the compositing window manager, or compositor for short

Yes, although there's not a clean separation between them. They are separate but GNOME Shell is still running in the same process space as Mutter and a crash in the desktop panel / shell can takedown Mutter with it.

Alright, I have two dumb questions, been on Fedora Atomic for about a month now and keep having these two issues. I've looked into trying to fix them but can't find a definitive answer poking around forums.

1. Whenever I reboot, my main media drive unmounts. This makes sense as it's the default. I have my main boot drive and then a 8TB HDD for media. How do I set it to automount on reboot? All instructions I find are about automounting a main drive or partition or whatever, not a secondary drive.

2. When my monitor dims out to black, it won't come back. (I'm using KDE). I end up having to reboot. It comes back fine from a full sleep or if I shake the mouse fast, but if it's in the "dim monitor" phase I'm just fucked and have to reboot. I have it set to not dim automatically, but is there a way to use the screen turn-off without turning it off or what?

>>110078842
Which artifacts? Do you mean where it doubles up the clock and login prompts? That's been happening to me but is apparently a symptom of using multi-monitor setup unless you mean something else.

How exactly are you mounting it in the first place? I haven't used atomic, but if it allows you to persistently modify /etc/fstab, then that'll be the way.

Idk why your dpms is failing to trigger back on, it works for me under Cachy with KDE 6.7 (now 6.8 actually).

Icecat updated to version 153 and now it's creating a "mozilla/icecat" directory in my home for some stupid reason, it's completely empty btw. And no, that's not where it stores its data, that would still be ".mozilla/icecat". So now I have 2 (two, dos) stupid mozilla directories polluting my home dir. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Shit, I realize now I worded it poorly the first time. My boot drive is fine. My second drive that I keep images, music, etc. on shuts off access every time. To "remount" it I just go into Dolphin, click it, enter my password, and it becomes accessible again. That's all. So I don't know if that counts as a "mount" or how to not require that, but that's the issue. It's where I keep my desktop images so that's the annoying part on restarts, kek, especially since I'm still doing a lot of them lately, but yeah.

>>110098879
Fuck you, man.

>>110098919
Oh, shit, haven't hit that yet, that's odd.
>>
>>110098972
Ok so when you use dolphin to mount a device it does so (usually) in a user owned temporary location, /run/media/$USER/<Label>
This is not intended to be persistent, so it's not surprising that it's no longer mounted on boot.

You need to set it to mount on boot. There are multiple ways to do this.
The first and most classic is editing /etc/fstab, creating an entry that lists the device UUID, location to mount, options etc. You'll likely find your main/system/root partition listed in there already.
The second is doing pretty much the same thing but using a systemd service (a systemd service pretty much reads /etc/fstab on boot and converts it into these services for legacy support).
The third I have no experience with at all, but KDE Partition Manager allows you to edit a mount point for a partition. I do NOT know how it does this and I'm not testing it, maybe it writes a new line to /etc/fstab? Maybe it makes a service, or maybe it does something else, I have no idea look it up. If you do choose to do it this way, probably best to unmount it through Dolphin first.

You may want to read over https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fstab and or https://wiki.cachyos.org/configuration/automount_with_fstab/

I know this is for Arch based systems, but it would be true of any normal Linux system. Surely Fedora Atomic does not make /etc/ configuration files completely immutable right? (How the fuck would you configure anything).
>>
>>110099067
>>110099129
Fucking hell, thank you, anons. That perfectly explains that and pointed me in the right direction, this should be an easy setup now. I've danced around this with commands and drive identification, I just took the easy way out with Dolphin and missed the fstab edit. This'll be it.

I thought it was fucking weird everyone would constantly be dealing with "db1035iu489hd9hf19" or whatever as a location instead of routing through an "sdb", explains a few other issues I've had on trying to point to a directory. Legitimately thank you.
>>
>>110099160
UUIDs are preferred when defining mounts over fixed device paths like /dev/sdb because those CAN change (for example if you swapped sata ports on disks, or something in the kernel changed the order in which devices were read). UUIDs will never change, so should be used over /dev/sdX.
>>
>>110099199
Also a fair note, thank you for the info, I just meant more that that seemed a normal path instead of whatever randomly generated long-text version
>>
>>110098882
You can use a ".hidden" file that lists files and folders you don't want to show up in your file manager.

Newish to linux, am I schizo for getting sketched out by Yazi, the terminal file manager thing? idk how to explain it, it's like, so extremely well polished, popular and out of nowhere, it's not really a tool anyone NEEDS that seems life changing yet everyone seemingly has it installed, it's rust and it's chinese. If Linux EVER managed to get the same stability as modern windows OS it'd wipe out Microsofts share of the desktop OS market in a decade, but right now people like me who have a clue but don't want to spend hours reading logs to find out what fucked up just relent and go back to Windows because I know unless the update is truly fucking disastrous, the machine will boot into the window manager and everything will work.

I have even less time for fucking around thesr days with a wife and kid demanding a lot of attention. I'm not sure I'd want it on my desktop. I'm happy with my Gentoo system there but on my laptop it's been perfect.

I build my own image with some modifications for my own use but I really like what they've built.

The Systemd sysupdate stuff is very well thought out too, despite me not being the biggest fan of Systemd the work they've done on that is excellent.

At some point, I think I'd like to see if I can build my own Gentoo system image that can be updated and deployed this way (erofs for the read-only root filesystem with everything in /usr) because I've not seen anyone do that yet.

A lot of it is the latter but if you use debian stable you do have Flatpaks, AppImages, Nix, and Guix for newer software if you want.

If it's only specific packages you can also install newer versions from debian backports. But it's not recommended to do too much because it can potentially break things from conflicting dependencies.

And lastly you do have the option to build the software yourself if you don't mind that.

Yes. The hardware/firmware is already initialised on reboot, but happens fresh on cold boot.

Nope.

there are benefits in both. I switched back to gnome after few months since it already covers 95% of my tiling needs, and tabbing between apps and windows is fast enough
but there definitely is value in having super fast switching to workspaces, and access terminals, if that's something you like

>>110109880
like most things in life, you only really need 5-10% to get 90% of the experience. most of the hassle is about configuring it to have things like copy & paste, and file manager etc.
>>
>>110109980
That's fair enough; I mostly just use my PC for web browsing and encoding movies for my jellyfin server, so it's really not worth it to me. I was going to put it on an old ass laptop for my uncle, but he's dumb as a stump, so i just gave him lxqt and pinned firefox for him.

Why do you need to encrypt your Linux kernel? We all know what the Linux kernel looks like.

If you really wanted to do that you could write a minimal initramfs that decrypts the real place where your kernel is and then kexec into it but what is your end goal?

Ultimately, something has to be unencrypted because the UEFI firmware isn't capable of decrypting on its own.
>>
>>110110939
>Why do you need to encrypt your Linux kernel? We all know what the Linux kernel looks like.
I wouldn't know and have no opinion on it.
>If you really wanted to do that you could write a minimal initramfs that decrypts the real place where your kernel is and then kexec into it but what is your end goal?
I personally don't have any end goal here, just trying to teach /fglt/ on hardware specific boot processes.
>Ultimately, something has to be unencrypted because the UEFI firmware isn't capable of decrypting on its own.
Yes, that's why you can't encrypt the EFI system partition. The whole process starts with the firmware loading up an EFI executable from the VFAT partition.
>>110110916
ok??

Fair enough, I guess you were just replying to the other guy.

I see this come up all the time now and again some "smart" guy comes up and says they NEED their boot encrypted.

They can never give a good reason why though. Just signing / measured boot alone is enough to detect tampering.

The only way it can work is by compromising the security/privacy of the kernel. The very idea of a kernel level anti-cheat acting as a black box is antithetical to what most people want from Linux.

So this clusterfuck of a bash script gets executed if you run firefox on NixOS. Very elegant.
(Just testing if gpu-screen-recorder is configured correctly for my shitposting purposes)
>>
>>110113078
This is just NixOS crap to make it find all the resources in the right place since NixOS doesn't follow the FHS filesystem hierarchy at all and places EVERYTHING in these hashed directories in the /nix store.

On a normal distro it would just pick up all of that from /usr or wherever.
>>
>>110113078
there isn't really better way to do it because Nix stores everything in hashed directories under /nix. It's a consequence of doing it like that
>>
>>110113078
Does this happen for every binary on nixos or its only a firefox thing?
>>
>>110112168
AI has about a 2 year knowledge gap vs current reality and no lived experience. It'll tell you every solution is either great or unworkable due to limitations which no longer exist. Try to use AI to deploy AI and you'll get a master class in this.
>>
>>110113154
Depends on the libraries it's linked against I suppose. htop for example is a symlink straight to the htop executable in the nix store without bash wrappers
>>
>>110113154
Anything that needs resources will need to know where to find them since they could be anywhere in /nix.

A Qt app would probably need environment variables set to find the various Qt / QML modules, etc, for example.

This is the trade-off with building everything the way they do. Nix is not like a traditional Linux distribution at all.

>>110113180
Libraries will probably be resolved by the linker but when it comes to resources / plugins / assets / etc, the program needs to know how to find them.
>>
>>110112018
No, it's just POTENTIALLY backdoored. It's still better than not using it at all and costs you nothing.
If it is backdoored, almost no one has the keys.
>>
>>110113154
firefox is one of the more extreme examples because it uses a lot of libraries. Other software might not need as much help to run. But if they have external libraries that they depend on they probably need a script like this to be pointed to the correct libraries otherwise it wont know which one to use
>>
>>110113192
>>110113199

Last time I used Gemini it told me to add my user account to multiple groups to solve compatibility with what was actually just my Bluetooth controller being in the wrong input mode for the emulator I was using. A new user wouldn’t know that adding your user to different groups frivolously is terrible advice.
>>
>>110113219
No, other than a slower initial startup. It's just setting environment variables which Firefox reads before then executing the actual Firefox binary.

On most distros Firefox runs a shell script like this, it's just more complicated on NixOS.

>>110113230
Firefox will dynamically load certain libraries with dlopen, so probably this is needed for those otherwise it wouldn't resolve them.
>>
>>110113219
all that shell script does is define directories to use before the program starts so it knows where to find the files. It doesn't have any real performance impact other than at startup where it might take a fraction of a second to run.

The newer versions of ZFS claim to have fixed the main issue, if I recall correctly it had something to do with encryption keys not being preserved after restoring a remotely backed up encrypted snapshot. As for FreeBSD, I imagine they need an encryption solution that works across a range of filesystems instead of being tied to any particular one.
