Nah I've been a NEET my entire life. Once we're all living on the street it's gonna be kino. I'll be on the street before you guys though so I'll save a nice cardboard box for ya.

yeah, I guess I grieve the loss of my career prospects. Not fired yet but it feels inevitable. I am technically a multimillionaire at this point so I don't have any reason to panic, but it is for sure a little sad. I miss the way my company treated us like valued employees before 2022 and not liabilities to be cut ASAP.

>oops they fired me and the senior dev, junior dev stays and messages us later saying "fuck now i'm expected to do ALL of the work by myself"
>next job, i'm making 60k as a fucking architect
>my coworkers from previous companies are saying that it's the same for them as senior developers/staff devs/etc

this intermediary period of the ai transition is going to be the worst because we dont know whats gonna happen. eventually we'll either find out this career is fully dead and ill do chickens or we'll figure out how we can actually be relevant again

I consider myself lucky that I found a software job at all, but I had to fight for it and it only pays $500/month. Also the company pivoted to AI recently, which sucks because I prefer real programming.

Software devs were being massively overpaid during the 2010s. This is just a natural correction.
>>
>>110082720
these are all consequences of giving human rights to webshitters

we never should have stopped calling them webmasters, as a distinction from actual programmers

I make 77K in tax accounting. Fine for just me renting a $1200 two bedroom and paying $560 a month in student loans. But no way will it ever be enough for a family. So I just stay home and play video games. Saving for a car is hard, yet alone an impossible house.

Contracting died in around 2016. You need a placement agency now, and they take a huge cut. Startups can be saas slop now, but it's very hard because of ai pressure (nobody has ever cared about quality). Other than that, the funding landscape is the worst it's ever been in the history of investing.
>>
>>110081274

I've already started seeing some discussions about shifting our focus to quality over quantity, about how the vibe coding experiment was very successful (lol) but we need to slow down and understand what works and what doesn't etc.
3 months ago they were dumping vibecoded fever dreams prompted by QA for us to review, now they're cutting their tokens. my manager has been very quiet about my low token usage as well

I came to terms with the inevitable short-term death of all human knowledge work earlier this year. Now I’m looking for manual labor, like being a warehouse worker or construction assistant. Getting out of the house every day and hanging around live human beings might actually be an improvement in my life quality, even if the pay is lower. Math, coding and sysops are still fun to do on my own time.
>>

"Impoverished" people who worked hand-in-hand with people of their own tribe, lived in meager dwellings with a family had more REAL wealth than people do today. It's older than that anon. Shit has been steadily accelerating downhill since the 1970s, when we sold our productive bussy to the financier class. Stagnant wages are way worse than you think. Wealth inequality has been skyrocketing for the last 50+ years.

If you want to get mad, you need to look at the massive economic changes put into place in the 1970s, and the economic events that proceeded to take place. Cyberpunk is centered around parodying the conglomerate, the megacorporation. The final evil of society. Ironically, contemporaneous to the peak of this genre, a new evil had emerged and was humiliating the conglomerate. Imagine a Weyland Yutani space station sends out a distress signal. Security forces are dispatched. By the time they arrive, the entire space station is stripped. Everything that wasn't secured was taken, everything that couldn't be taken was destroyed or ruined. The people are dead, lobotomized, or tortured into vegetative states.
Turns out there was something nastier than the megacorps out there, lurking the dark. Repulsive and strange things that flit out of hyperspace, pick the bones of industry clean, and then leave as quickly as they came. Rumors of these mysterious pirates paint a terrifying picture. They have strange weapons and technologies that disrespect the laws of nature. They can turn a man inside out with a glance.

The 70s and 80s were a bloodbath. Corporate raiders with junk bonds forcing LBOs. That was how they first showed up. These days, they have many names. Private equity. Venture capital. Investment banking. The megacorps, for all their might, were made to be impotent. Almost none of them are left. We live in a graveyard of their bones. We helped, because at the time we were fed up with conglomerates. Men making $800k/day telling us that executives making $200k/year were greedy. We really didn't know how good we had it until it was too late.

Market was already saturated
I knew a bank-related company with FIVE HUNDRED employees, for a shitty banking app that DIDNT EVEN DO ANYTHING but call another company's API.
500 people basically didn't have anything to do but backstab each other.
How was it possible? Manager would get more budget as his headcount was rising
I worked in a company that had 50 web developers working on a simple Python webapp that wasn't even designed to run by more than one user. It now functions better with 5 and company isn't even all-in on AI, with CTO even being skeptical about it.
Career isn't gone nature is just balancing too many useless eaters.
We never needed this many software engineers, at least not this many to be employees

That's kind of the point. They're obedient dollar store filler that can be ejected whenever convenient. A company will try to load everything onto the 2 competent employees they have that actually require decent pay until someone convinces them they can finally be replaced by Claude for 5x the cost of just keeping the competent people in the first place. Bean counters can't tell the difference between them other than one costing more.
