As someone with a transgender parent and as someone who was in a long-term relationship with a transgender person when I discovered the series, Stop!! Hibari-kun might've been more thought-provoking than it would for most people. While it may feel like a generic anime gag-comedy on the surface, it is a pretty interesting bit of Japanese LGBT media written and illustrated by Hisashi Eguchi, original character designer for Perfect Blue. Also, it has a great soundtrack.One of the first things that stands out is that, despite Hibari's gender identity being part of the gag, she is rarely ever the butt of the joke. It is never hateful in its portrayal of her. In fact, when other characters treat her poorly because of the subject, they are very obviously painted as villains, in a downright evil sort of light. And it manages to do this in a comedic manner and without coming off as virtue signaling; everything feels natural and organic. The unexpectedness of this portrayal and treatment of, in my opinion, an obviously trans character is further compounded not only by the fact that she is more fleshed-out and three-dimensional than any other trans character I have seen in the medium but also by the fact that it is a comedy published in the early 1980s of all things!Overall, not only is it a decent show in general, but I think this is a worthwhile series from the perspective of culture and media alone.As a closing note, there is an excellent interview with Hisashi Eguchi in the toco toco series on YouTube that is a little bit telling to me as to how this came to be.
