What the fuck happened to WiFi router prices?
>>
They decided to also charge you for the spying hardware now instead of just sneaking it in.
>>

You don't need that.

Spyware is expensive, goy. I find it funny that the more you pay the more kikeware is baked in meanwhile those cheap chink routers usually rock a openwrt reskin
>>
>>110090959
it costs alot of mula to make those antennas.
>>

>>110090959
not entirely unrelated to the RAM price situation, given that a router is a computer with a specific use, and requires much of the components of a PC except storage.

Muttmerica is banning routers from China (i.e. all routers) aren't they? Lol
They are just gonna crank up price on remaining router stocks already in muttland to squeeze the last drop of money they can
>>
They were banned like a year or two ago.

They didn't want Chinese routers anymore due to security risks. Well that was most routers on the market including many of the best.
They can be remotely hijacked to act as the antennas for drone swarms. Used to generate 3d radar maps of every home and thing in range. And spy on all data all the people remote working are sending.
Relying on millions of computerized radios made by a foreign rival is in fact a massive security risk.

Of course any backdoored devices even those supported by the US will be hackable to the ai of enemies and allies.
Adding intentional backdoors is an outdated practice with ai and is just an open door to rivals as well and even devices without them will be easy for ai to hack without serious improvements.

$60-$80 for a basic model that does everything normal people need.
Up to $200 for the top of the line with latest standards and extra features.

I sold my wifi router and just use a long ass ethernet cable to my firewall now

wifi is dogshit technology, inherently insecure
>>
>>110091135
If my government bans something, i know it is good. It makes me want it even more.
I buy chink routers and install chink security cams on a street next to a ZOG military base.
Bans are completely nonsensical anyway... you really trust that the Chinese is going to tell you exactly what is inside the parcel? I can buy banned devices just fine.
>>
>>110091165

Because it is a security risk to rely on foreign circuits that can embed vulnerabilities.
And relying on foreign circuits made cheaper abroad kills your domestic capability to produce them which is just as important as making your own steel or having your own energy sources. If you cannot mass produce domestic circuits and their components you are at the mercy of others.

A bunch of MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+ to interconnect rooms with fibre

OP is complaining about price and you rec Ubiquiti? If you're gonna go prosumer like that then you build your whole setup including router around it so you can use their dumb management bullshit, and then put hundreds of devices on it because you own an office building. If you're gonna do the network setup yourself with the router then you get a home AP that's just as capable for half the price of Ubiquiti's cheapest model so you can set up multiple APs with better coverage and feel less bad about throwing them in the trash when the next wifi meme comes out.

>>
>>110093519
>Routeros is literally open fw
It's commercial closed source, to install it on an x86 machine you need to buy a license. Yes, OPNsense exists, but for SoHo it's practically non-existant, and the only alternative FW you'd be installing on a MikroTik would be OpenWRT which is complete and utter meme dogshit only retards would want to install.
>>110093596
It is crippled because it's bloated and keeps breaking with the devs not giving a solitary fuck about fixing things. You can brick your SoHo router by doing an OpenWRT package update because of how massive they are compared to what those devices offer. Compare that to RouterOS that packs a metric fuckton of features in less than 16MB of firmware data, all while still being Linux based.

OpenWRT is garbage and anyone recommending it doesn't know shit about fuck, just wants to circlejerk about how everything he uses is FOSS.
>>
>>110090959
The internet has become more expensive & lower quality. Whats going to be next when it fails?
>>
>>110093797
>You can brick your SoHo router by doing an OpenWRT package update because of how massive they are compared to what those devices offer.
Skill issue. You're not supposed to use the fucking package manager on some shit router with fuck all flash store. You're supposed to compile your image with all of the shit you want already built into it.

I would only recommend using the Apk package manager if you're doing a custom x86 box like I am, otherwise just save yourself the hassle and use the image builder.
>>
>>110093828
>Skill issue
Yes, thanks for confirming to whom OpenWRT caters to. If it can brick itself from a firmware update, it's bad software. Just because there's an obscure piece of documentation telling you not to do it or else it'll happen doesn't excuse your dogshit software and it's retarded developers.
>just save yourself the hassle
And buy hardware that can run software that actually works, and isn't written by complete muppets that'll constantly shift the blame on the end user for not doing their job right.
>>
>>110093879
>If it can brick itself from a firmware update
Package manager != Firmware update. If you do it properly with the image builder and re-flashing it or using Owut then that won't happen:
https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/installation/sysupgrade.owut

And yes, OpenWRT does expect you to RTFM. It's not crippled at all, it's actually very powerful and they don't hide things or limit its functionality.

If you want babies point and click GUI then yeah, something like Router OS is probably better for you.
>>
>>110093920
If the package manager can brick your router, it should stop you from doing so. Period. Otherwise don't have it at all. It's not that hard to add a few lines of code that check if the free space is less than what's going to get installed. If anything it's telling of the quality of the entire project. A tinker toy for jobless retards like (You) to stroke your ego with.

Meanwhile RouterOS is deployed in commercial settings where no one would ever think of running anything OpenWRT based it's such a bad project. The embodiment of everything bad there is to FOSS. Including (You).
>>
>>110093953
Running

>>
>>110094052
You still don't get it, you're not even supposed to be using the package manager. You're doing the thing that hurts and then complaining when it hurts.

If you upgraded the firmware properly then it wouldn't have bricked in the first place.
>>
>>110094068
>you're not even supposed to be using the package manager
Then including a package manager is poor design, simple as. Either way, OpenWRT takes an L.
>>

>>
>>110093967
Yes, I get it, you're an insecure manchild so you equal the ability to fuck things up to something being meant for "adults", because it doesn't "handhold" you. That's not what it means. A toy is a piece of software that can brick a production machine due to it's developers being incompetent twats that expect everyone to know how to navigate their clusterfuck.

If I run
/system/package/update/install
on RouterOS, I won't end up with a bricked device, because RouterOS is a mature piece of software written by paid developers for use in commercial setting, so they make sure it can't fuck itself over due to user error. You can remove the firewall configuration on an edge router and get assfucked, that's on you, sure. But it won't brick itself because you've done what you'd do on any other device.
>>110094068
>you're not even supposed to be using the package manager
Ah yes, you're not supposed to expect the thing that doesn't fuck your shit up on any other machine to fuck your shit up. It's a (You) problem and a skill issue for not knowing that. You should've known that from... somewhere, since no piece of documentation of OpenWRT points to that.

That's neat, OpenWRT should do this.
>>
>>110094383
It DOES, that's what Owut is doing:
https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/installation/sysupgrade.owut
>>
>>110094377
Just about every router OpenWRT is targeting has a package manager in it's WebUI and it's expected of you to use it to update it, and it's expected for it not to brick the device. Therefore, OpenWRT is trash software.

But keep insisting that it's not a fault of OpenWRT, it's really entertaining.
>>
>>110094394
Cool, all they have to do is integrate it into the package manager then.
>>
>>110094396
The page to download packages literally warns you that they can break your system:
https://openwrt.org/meta/infobox/upgrade_packages_warning

>>110094412
It's a separate tool for flashing firmware. The package manager doesn't know how to manipulate partitions and re-flash firmware with a new image, etc.
>>
>Open-wrt this
>Open-wrt that
What about dd-wrt, (advanced)tomato?
>>
>>110094439
Also, what about fiber routers?
>>
>>110094434
Apparently, there are layers to this shit, but the initial statement that "you're not supposed to use the package manager" doesn't seem to be true either, since it only talks about upgrading packages, not installing them.
It's a mess either way.
>>
>>110091201
>capability to produce them which is just as important as making your own steel or having your own energy sources
woah cool it with those antistockholding remarks

>Because it is a security risk to rely on foreign circuits that can embed vulnerabilities.
Ignore that idiot. It's mostly because the fucking manufacturers take forever to ship anything, as do the companies that handle the packaging and the board manufacturing and the assembly.
Everything's taking far longer than it should and nobody's fessing up to why!

That's a 10GbE router, those are pretty expensive.

>>110090991
>Can I have a frame of reference of what they usually cost?
$39 for a hEX lite (single core, 64MB RAM only) or $59 for a hEX (dual core, 256MB RAM).
>>
>>110093596
>If you think OpenWRT is crippled it's a skill issue.

I remember back in the wrt54gl days, openwrt literally halved the throughput of the router. Never bothered checking it ever since.

>MikroTik hAP ax3.
You mean hAP be3. The ax3 only has 1GbE ports and one 2.5GbE (the fuck is the point of that?), the be3 is finally 2.5GbE on all ports.
>>
>>110097442
it is known that mikrotik is for thirdies for a reason. jank, brittle hardware and software.

Which is unobtainium, and as usual, has early adopter WiFi issues. Which is why people tend to choose Unifi for wireless and MikroTik for the wired parts.

Not really, that stupid asus in OP is slower in the real world than a $99 hAP ax2

Cmon, this is a pro/industrial version and I think the price is pretty reasonable for what it does. Pop this on top of a tall building and you have wifi coverage for a couple of blocks around. I wonder how many devices you can serve with it.

still on direct ethernet gang, top of the line wifi is always overpriced.

Just spent 3 hours untangling fiber cable, worth every secs
>>
>>110093879
OpenWRT's main weakness is updating itself, yes. Other than that though it's very good. The Realtek switch market especially has been getting a bunch of love in OpenWRT thanks to a couple schizos and Claude/ChatGPT.
>>
>>110097561
It probably needed some proprietary firmware crap or something. Can be a problem with the shitty offloads, etc. It's fine for capable hardware though.
