Anons, please help me with my monitor woes

I want to use multiple displays with my laptop, where I have one cable going from my laptop to a hub, and then one cable from the hub to my main 1440p monitor via Displayport, and one from the hub to my second monitor via HDMI (it's old and has no DP etc input)

After a lot of searching, I found a hub that has a removable input cable (most have un-removable 2-3 inch long USB-C input cables, which is too short for my needs) and does 120hz at 4k (which I wanted for future-proofing), but when I try to use it, while the main monitor detects an input and turns on, it says no signal detected, while on the laptop screen, it has different windows constantly freezing and unfreezing, as if a external display was being plugged in and unplugged over and over. And if I unplug the cable, Windows still shows a second display being connected

I've tried to troubleshoot this, but:

>The USB C port on the laptop DOES support video, it has Displayport 1.4 support
>Both the USB C cable the hub comes with, and my longer cable power the hub, and HDMI from the hub to either monitor works with either cable, so it's not the USB-C cables not transmitting power/video or the hub being totally broken
>I've been using a USB C to Displayport cable to the main monitor till now, so my Monitor's DP input isn't broken
>I've tried two Displayport 2.1 cables and one Displayport 1.2 cable with the hub and monitor, so it's not a faulty DP cable
>I tried making my refresh rate 60hz in Windows settings to see if the hub/cables just can't do a 1440p 165hz despite what's advertised, doesn't fix it
>This: reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/1ppxm5v/external_monitors_blink_in_an_out_when_on_dock/?sort=top matches my situation almost exactly, right down to it being a lenovo laptop, and many replies suggest EM interference, but unplugging or turning off my wireless speakers, mouse, keyboard etc didn't help
>I ordered a 2nd unit of this hub, behaves the same

Any ideas?
>>
>>110095628
Also, here are some ideas I still have that might be the cause of the problem/might be solutions that I haven't tried yet or I don't have a way to test:

>I've only tried Displayport 2.1 and 1.2 cables, as I said, maybe I specifically need a Displayport 1.4 cable? But from the reading I've done, at least Displayport 2.1 cables should be able to do everything 1.4 cables can, so I don't think this is it, but unlike the stuff below, I COULD buy a 1.4 cable and try it?

>I have noticed that after setting my refresh rate to 60hz in Windows settings and plugging in and then unplugging the monitor via the hub, that the refresh rate gets reset to 165hz, so maybe when plugging in the monitor, it shifts back to 165hz instantly and I never actually was able to try a 60hz output to the monitor through the hub? But if so I don't know how to force 60hz, since I can't find a setting in the monitor's menus itself to set a refresh rate on the monitor's end rather then on window's end

>It's possible maybe this model of hub is just defective on all/most units with it's DP output, but the reviews don't mention that, and even if that is the case, I can't find any other hubs that either have a removable or a 3+ foot long USB C input cable, while also supporting 120hz+ at 4k

>Maybe there's a specific incompatibility with this hub model and my main monitor's model, but I don't have any other displays that accept a Displayport input to check if using my laptop with the hub and a Displayport out would work with a different display with

Again, if anybody has any other ideas, please let me know

>>110095267
At least with my monitor and cables and laptop, for whatever reason, VRR options and I think some specific color settings only show up in the Nvidia control panel when I'm using Displayport rather then HDMI (which is why I insist on using a hub that can do displayport to my main monitor and HDMI to my other monitor, rather then HDMI to both)
>>
>>110095688
I think it's because hdmi 1.4 is still kinda around, whereas old displayport 1.2 supports a lot more features

Bumping this from last thread:

Trying to figure out why leaving my laptop on, especially with a web browser open, leads to a gradual increase in idle CPU temps (just with that web browser, steam, txt docs, a torrent client, an image editor, some images open etc, nothing actually intensive) as time goes on, from resting in the 30s to 40s with random peaks to the 50s intially, to maybe resting in the 50s-60s with peaks in the 70s after a few days, and right now it's resting in the 70s and 80s with peaks into the 90s, even though I haven't actually started up many new programs, and my CPU usage at any given moment is really only 30% to 50%.

This sounds like a memory leak to me, except this is CPU temps going up, not memory usage. Could it maybe be my RAM sticks getting hotter and hotter as the days go by and it heating up my mobo and CPU by proxy, maybe? My RAM doesn't have a dedicated temp readout tho, so I can't verify that, but my mobo temps are consistently like 1 degree below the CPU temps

Is there a tool I can use to like, show how much total CPU % processes of the same name (so all the separate web browser processes get grouped together) use over time in a graph, to see if anything gradually rises over a week period the next time I restart my laptop?

Or is there a tool I can use to force a given set of processes to stay under a certain total CPU usage %? as I said in that last post I did install process lasso, but it's CPU limiter only allows you to set a % per process, and even after I set one at like .2% per firefox.exe, and it started to limit them to 2 cores each, it didn't seem like it was making a difference and a few hours later it was spitting out errors about being unable to set those cpu affinity limits anymore

Also, I have no idea if this is normal or not, but it may be worth noting that the CPU is also running at nearly it's maximum clock/ghz right now too despite, again, only having a web browser and some other things open and running

I also included some values from hwinfo in case that says anything meaningful

According to the uptime in the task manager, this is with my laptop having been on for 11 and a half days

>Have you installed your chipset drivers

I have no idea, but if they don't come pre-installed on the laptop, probably not. I think I updated drivers once through Lenovo Vantage though?

>and are you using the balanced power plan?
Through window's settings, yes, it says "Balanced (Active)", but I know through Vantage I have the power/performance settings set to custom with everything set as low as possible, as seen here, to try to minimize power draw and heat and (the fan settings aren't in the screenshot) to have the fans kick in faster/more aggressively.

If I'm playing a game, I sometimes shift it to the default vantage setting or the max performance one, but that's not the case right now/within the past few months, and on that note, this issue I'm describing in >>110097348 is relatively recent, like it only started happening within the past maybe 3-4 months, wheras I've had vantage set up like this for 2ish years

Can your PC be too good/capable for the stuff you're trying to run on it?

I've been using a Stone Age four core Phenom II with a GTX 750 Ti for years, I got it off a friend. I'm finally in a financial position where I can build a PC from scratch, but the thing is, I'm not really interested in the absolute latest shit, probably just emulators and stuff released up until like 2020 (Halo MCC, XCOM 2, Crash remake, some of the new decomp projects coming out, etc.)

DDR4 RAM is cheaper, and AM4 would be good enough for the kind of stuff I wanna play, so I picked out a Ryzen 7 5700X. Then I saw the 5800X3D is only $130 more, and that's supposed to be like the best AM4 option possible, so I went ahead and switched orders. Everybody says it's pretty retarded to intentionally start on AM4 and handicap yourself, though, so I bit the bullet and ordered a 7 9800X3D.

Now I'm kind of worried that I'm using more money than necessary, and if I pair it with a 9070 XT or something, shit's all gonna go out of whack when I try to play Unreal Tournament 2004 or the original Star Wars Battlefront or w/e. I wasn't going to pair it with a big jumbotron, I was planning on a 27" 2560 monitor.

I know you can intentionally limit frame rates to make old games behave, but is it a lot of effort to fiddle with? Does it hurt the CPU/GPU to make it underperform most of the time? Should I just cancel the 9800X3D and go back to the first choice?

Your motherboard doesn't contain any boot entries for any of the EFI executables located in the drive's EFI system partition. Now what happens is the EFI firmware picks up the executable located at \\EFI\boot\bootx64.efi as a fallback entry, which in your case is the Windows loader.
So: you either replace \\EFI\boot\bootx64.efi with the Linux bootloader which could be something like \\EFI\whatever_Linux_distro\grub\grubx64.efi. Or you create a boot entry for \\EFI\whatever_Linux_distro\grub\grubx64.efi.
>>110101044
Not all implementations let you arbitrarily browse an EFI executable. Had a HP ProBook laptop which had it but that was the only case.

Decompiling isn't inherently illegal. I have had no issue doing things like this myself. Perhaps you should start with experimenting having it use tools like ghidra or ida pro just for basic analysis and fucking around before you start asking "how i crack denuvo make game run?" or something. Lying about your intentions and why you are doing these things also helps. I can't make up reasons for why you would want to do this on the fly but if you understand legit uses for these tools you can do that.

>>
>>110102623
I already did. Right out of the US with my citizenship intact.

>>110102695
Perhaps rather than asking for a "mod menu" explain that this is an offline game with no microtransactions (even if that's a lie) and you are interested in finding values associated with specific things in memory. Like money, HP, etc. If you know anything about that you will know that the common practice is to deplete the value on purpose and try to observe where in memory it has changed. So you need to get it to chill the fuck out about that. Codex is probably going to work better than Claude Code cause Claude is a narc.
>>
>>110102695
While taking a piss I got an idea. Look for an existing trainer that is open source. Make sure it works etc. Then have your agent analyze it and explain what it would take to make something similar. After that tell it to output a .md file with instructions for an agent to analyze a game and create a similar trainer.

Reducing the power limit will mean that the cpu usage percentage will go higher as it's not as fast, no?
Sounds like the fact that your laptop goes to 90c is the main problem, even on the lowest power limit. I imagine the laptop's cooling solution is inadequate right out of the factory.
I would repaste/replace-the-thermal-pad, whichever it has. Dust the fan and fins. Maybe even put some extra thermal pads on hotter parts, connecting them to the outer case. Even if the laptop's case is plastic, you can lose some heat that way.

>Reducing the power limit will mean that the cpu usage percentage will go higher

Maybe, I don't know if the % is based on the actual maximum performance of the CPU or what the current cap is as set by the power plan or vantage, but in either case the thing I'm concerned about is the temperature, I'm just looking at the CPU usage % since I don't know of a better way to try to suss out why the temps are going up

If anything my assumption would be that hitting temps in the 60s, 70s and 80s while CPU % is at 30% to 50% suggests something weird is going on, I would have thought it would take CPU usage to be like at 70%, 80%, 90% etc to hit temps that high? But I don't know much about computer hardware so I really have no idea

For that reason I am curious for anons to comment on if the clock speed and voltage shown in >>110097631 are normal/expected given the CPU usage %'s i'm at and if my temps match those things.

>I imagine the laptop's cooling solution is inadequate right out of the factory.
I mean, I dusted the fans out a few months ago, and this issue also only started within the past few months, it's not like it's been a consistent problem since I got the laptop 2 years ago.

Temps rising gradually just from being left on with no extra things running over time I guess does sound like maybe an issue with heat dissipation, but wouldn't you still eventually hit a point where the CPU etc is at the temperature produced by the wattage being used and it wouldn't continue to increase? What I'm seeing in practice is that this gradual temperature rise from resting in the 30s-40s with random peaks in the 50s, to then resting in the 50s and 60s and having random peaks to the 70s occurs over like 3-4 days, and in this case even 2 weeks since the laptop was booted up, I actually continued to see a notable rise in temps just over the past 3ish days

I'd have thought it would hit that maximum equilibrium within like 12-24 hours, not over many days or a few weeks?

With yt-dlp, If %(channel)s, %(uploader)s etc aren't detecting the video uploader/author to be made part of the filename, is there a way I can "manually" tell yt-dlp that for this website, the author username can be found on X or Y part of the page's html or source or elements or wherever, so it can still add that info to the filename of the downloaded file(s)?

Same for, I guess, if for a given site it can't download or detect the video file? DownThemAll and Video Download Helper both can and it seems to just be a simple .mp4 url within the page so I don't know why yt-dlp is having a hard time

Well yt-dlp is open source. All of the scraper logic for different sites is basically like individual scripts. Something reliable that will be used daily, general use, heaviest lifting it will have to do is browser gaming and potentially bluestacks so a dedicated GPU isn't needed. Something simple since she is more used to PCs from the 90s/00s where it would just work out of the box without being bombarded by AI and other notifications (but I can always go in and disable that stuff). Plus if it has good cooling (I doubt she'll clean it) and a touch screen.
Can I please have some recommendations? Even if it only checks a couple boxes.

Find something with 16GB of RAM. Just about anything will do. Put Windows 10 LTSC IoT on it and activate it with massgrave. Yes, 32GB of RAM would be better but in this economy? I'm getting by on 16 myself and a bunch of the general purpose machines here at my work are the same model with a i5-12450H. Of course I'd like something better. But that will have to wait.

Depends what you mean by "fully idle"

like 5 minutes after turning the laptop on after all the start stuff has settled down, with nothing extra opened beyond what does automatically like steam, hwinfo, discord, my torrent client and background stuff, it idles between 34c and 37c, and can usually stay within that range even with an image editor, some videos, images, notepad docs, a pdf reader, and other stuff like that open, though in practice maybe it stays more around the high 30s and low 40s then

Opening a web browser will obviously spike the CPU as it's starting the web browser up (since I have like 1000-2000 tabs open), but after that settles down and the browser is up and running, the laptop will still stay in like the low to mid-high 40s generally, even as I'm clicking on stuff and loading web pages, with some spikes into the 50s

But then, again, within a few days of that all being open, even without me starting up tons of other software and with no games or anything running, temps will climb to eventually sit to be in the 60s with spikes into the 70s, and apparently after a few weeks, even sitting in the 70s or low 80s and spiking into the 90s, though today its back to the 60s and 70s so that might have just been a fluke

If you're gonna slop it up it helps if you know what the code you're looking at actually does so you can critique it before you push slop into production.

I mean, if the code it spits out is pretty advanced it will take a long time for to learn how to read it. And since AI is going at a pretty fast pace not sure if I will ever catch up
>>
>>110113674
You skim it and look to see if anything is especially off. Doesn't happen as much as it used to but it still happens. Describing problems while attempting to use something you don't understand does mean the AI can debug it's own shit but sometimes it fails. If you can spot the problem you can tell it what to do.

If you're going to primarily be using AI just try to understand the basics of the languages you want to work with. Scripting languages like python, PHP, etc are more human readable and LLMs basically defaulted to them because that's what they were really good at. But they're better at working with all kinds of things now and if you have a big pile of unreadable slop and something is going wrong you're just going to burn tokens begging it to fix it. I'm no programming genius or anything but I can at least dig into my AI generated codebases and get a good idea of where things are going long. The bigger the project the more modular you should try to make it too.

Seagate's one of the brands people talk shit about, I think there was a run of their 3TB "Barracuda" drives which was known for reliability problems a few years back, but it's basically impossible to predict how long any given drive is going to last outside of examining big market trends like that. I don't think they're better or worse than any other manufacturer. I bought one of their 4TB external "Backup Plus" HDDs brand new from Walmart like two years ago to use with an old Windows 7 shitbox at the time, and CrystalDisk says it's still in good health with my current build, so I think you should be okay.

>how long can it go without power, sitting in a drawer somewhere
Supposedly the oil that lubricates the platter bearings can pool and the bearings will seize up if an HDD is not spun up once every so often. In theory, either an HDD or SSD can last an extremely long time "in storage" if you just power them on for a few hours once every few months. Just don't manhandle them or shake 'em around.

If there's a way to prevent them from even being able to touch the wider internet it would be nice at least as security theater.

how to prepare for the ai-induced internet apocalypse. we can assume that ai will infect and hide in our computers with 0-day exploits and be able to take over the internet and bring on an information winter. how would I prepare about that, what hardware do I need, what knowledge should I hoard. just like how people have doomsday preparation like shelters with canned food, gold nuggets, ready backpacks filled with stuff nearly guaranteeing survival. we need internet and personal computing doomsday . something like post-ai fastman

ok the actual icon sizes is the same but the padding is tighter
and if I turn on the logo in 153 it is top left instead of centered so it does not center the shortcuts vertically either by pushing them down and the logo looks really messed up being top left like that

so while all the icons have the same size they feel much more cramped since they are not spread out

I think Inform 7 is declarative but not functional, it's very domain specific though. I know it compiles to either C or inform 6, an older more C-like/pythony language, which compiles to an interpreted z-code or something. It was made for interactive fiction so it's like one of those other ones :P
