>>110106214OSX 10.6 was actually really good but they both suck these days.
>>110106399This was part of Apple's push to pivot away from term "PC" for their PCs by branding them as Macs while everything else, mostly Windows, was given the moniker PC because it was a generic term.

>>110106214Mac if you want a companion for your iPhone, aren't a gamer, and aren't an engineer or scientist. Otherwise, PC.
>>110107354How did it backfire? It doubled sales for Mac computers, and when Microsoft tried responding to it, that backfired because of EXIF metadata that showed their response was made on a Mac

>>110106214PC guy, because he's the reason me and most other people who work with computers have a job. Mac has an alright design language I guess.
>>110106214You know what that reflected?Apple was trying to make their products look cool by creating this association between device and the type of person who would use one.And the reason why Apple got so popular was because they got lucky with a major zeitgeist change. People started becoming more concerned with their aesthetics back in the early 2000s. So owning a certain device that made you look cool became the norm. That's the context in which you should understand that advert. They were trying to make owning a classic PC look very uncool because it was associated with some boring office dork whose laptop didn't even look aesthetic and who didn't own an ipod and didn't even have le vibrant youthful hoodie look. And it worked. It injected this mindset into normies that they must buy iPods to look cool while they jog outside. The first advert for iPod had the owners displaying it ostentatiously like it was some jewelrsy of sorts. That's how it all started. And Apple planted itself firmly in the normies' psyche through this perverse blending of technology into an aesthetic smooth shell that would make you look cool if you owned it.
>>110110432Didn't work well enough to overtake Windows thoughbeit
>>110110438The market somewhat adapted and adding aesthetics to devices became the new thing. But then the differentiation strategy became: our products are also aesthetic but we don't go so far as to make our products firstly about aesthetics like Apple. But that's mostly in the past. Since Apple moved on to its own silicon, it's a different ballgame.Windows was never overtaken because the effects of first-mover advantage are hard to counter after the fact. Apple could only become relevant by focusing on software and ease of use and delivering this on tiny devices (ipods) and later smartphone. Then gradually attracting more normies through ecosystem lock-in, in relation to devices they already bought.
>>110110432>they got lucky
>>110110487Yeah I was there so I know what I'm saying. Before the iPod Apple was a niche company making computers for hipsters who liked having cute white boxes. Especially the rich bought them. Or designers. Sure they were also very used in advertising and publishing.Very niche, as I said.I know because I bought a Powerbook G4 back in 2004. When the iPod craze hadn't started yet.And I witnessed this change in the zeitgeist. Apple was specialised in building devices (mostly computers) with a heavy design bias. THey were primarily about aesthetics. That's why they made the cringe apple mouse without any buttons. Because Jobs told his underlings to stop trying to make what everyone else does and make something nobody else does.
>>110110542>Because Jobs told his underlings to stop trying to make what everyone else does and make something nobody else does.that doesn't sound like luck to me at all
>>110110542Apple was the one with first move advantage though
