AI Overview

yserver is a modern X11 server written entirely from scratch in Rust. Created by developer Jos Dehaes with assistance from the AI coding tool Claude Code, the project aims to provide a practical display server for modern Linux environments by completely dropping decades of legacy X11 baggage.

Core Approach: Dropping the Baggage

Unlike X.Org, yserver is not a 1:1 clone. It explicitly removes obsolete X11 features that modern applications no longer use:
• Dropped: Multiple X11 screens, non-TrueColor legacy visuals, indirect GLX, endian-swapped clients, and the old DDX driver ABI.
• Architecture: It directly interfaces with hardware via DRM/KMS and Vulkan 1.2. This bypasses traditional middleware layers for a cleaner, more secure path to the GPU.
• Execution: It utilizes libseat for rootless seat management and operates on a single-threaded core for predictable protocol behavior.

Features & Tested Environments

Despite being a young project, yserver has progressed rapidly to support major X11 extensions:
• Supported Extensions: RandR (fractional scaling/rotation, gamma correction), DRI3, GLX acceleration, Composite, XINERAMA, XKB keyboard layouts, and XFIXES.
• Desktop Parity: It can run fully functional desktop environments like MATE, Xfce, Cinnamon, and Plasma, as well as window managers like Openbox, Compiz, and Awesome.
• Compatibility: It successfully runs Steam games, CDE/Motif apps, and has been ported to support FreeBSD and Alpine Linux (musl).
• Hardware: Compatible across AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, Snapdragon X1, Apple Silicon, and virtio-gpu.

Dunno but X11 is so old and yucky now and wayland is gay something new needs to be designed from scratch

I unironically miss when Rust was associated with trannies instead of vibejeets.

I'll stick to xlibre thanks all IA projects only for ported game executables not for OSes or general software.

Poojeets have seamlessly melded into most tranny spaces. I think that says a lot about both of them.

HEY. How dare you step on my perch! I'm the self-designated yserver shill here.
>>110107466
Just two weeks ago, xorg had 12 CVE's published against it.
Not a big deal, right?
Well, they cut a release "21.1.25" which contained the needed security fixes, except it accidentally broke the DDX driver ABI, making things actually worse lol.
So you had for example Arch shipping a broken package for a week+, until they bothered to backport some fixes.
yserver neither had the CVE's, nor relies on DDX drivers.
Putting that aside, yserver gives you a modern rendering architecture (the good parts from some wayland compositors) while still retaining all the X11 features.
It's not something you must use. xorg still just works (release woes aside) after all. But it's a very nice, and original, option to have. I'm running it right now, and it appears to be working just fine.
>>110107471
The developer appears to be competent and very attentive to user reports. But waiting for 2-3 months to see how it matures is not a bad idea, of course.

This is like the third attempt to fix X11 with AIslop, and like the previous attempts it will be abandoned when the >dev stops getting attention or runs out of credits.

Why are the Rust cult members the only ones who go around saying they wrote everything in their special unicorn language? I don't go around saying I wrote something in C#, C, C++ or Pascal. Seems like a dogwhistle for the unhinged community.

Good to see he's still going. The problem I see with LLM assisted repos is not that people can make it compile and run, but if they will actually bother maintaining after they make a big r*ddit post about it.
>>
Do I even need to say why this is bad?

1. Vibe-coded
2. Rust, which has a lot of problems. Compiler is slow, community is Gay AF. I don't have anything with gay people, it's just that most are fucking retarded.
3. X11, even if it's slow, has legacy garbage, it''s pretty good. And x11 > wayland cuz most software needs XWayland and Wayland+XWayland is slower than X11.

But problems with X are in its design, not the language it's written in.
>>
>>110110427
so hopefully soon we'll have new better vibecoded display servers, better designed - because Wayland is sabotage of Linux too
>>
>>110109108
Literally not a problem in the current year of our Lord if you're using the best models.
>>
>>110108871
Because being written in Rust means a class of issues basically don't exist. No one cares about your GCd nonsense or crashy C++.
>>
>>110108871
Why can't C devs do it? They wouldn't need to hide anything, right?
>>
>>110107466
Wayland doesn’t handle programs controlling your computer
This is important if your arms don’t work and you need a program like Talon to click on buttons for you

doesn't mean connectors (monitors) or DISPLAYs. either it's a stale entry, or a "feature" no one of us ever seen lol.

>>110109820
>like X11
IT IS X11.
If anything doesn't work, it's a bug (which will be fixed in <48h).
>>
>>110112546
No it's not. OP mentioned that it's written entirely from scratch, that obsolete features have been dropped, and that it's not a 1:1 clone.
That means that some X11 features might not be implemented yet. This particular feature is not supported by wayland, so the devs or their AI might have considered it obsolete. It really depends on how they decided on what features to drop.
>>
>>110112963
X11 is a protocol, genius. And it is an X11 implantation. So IT IS X11. It is not Xorg.
The readme is probably stale. Anything people use will be implemented, or probably already implemented.
The thing you specifically asked for already works (obviously). I just wanted to provide a more generic answer that covers more questions.
And the project builds in under a minute, so you could literally try it out between writing two /g/ comments.
>>
>>110107694
xorg is over 20 years old. why is a window manager still getting a dozen CVEs after 20 years. insane.

It's the same with Go, Zig and other modern languages.
>dogwhistle
This is not what dogwhistle means. No one is trying to imply anything, it literally outright states what language it is written in so other developers that use said language will want to check it out to see how they did it.
>>
>>110119584
the github language graph at the bottom shows it though
>>
>>110120499
Yeah it does.
