>RAM remains unaffordable
>"No end in sight (for price hikes)" according to experts
>GPUs are more expensive than ever, and not better
>High-end GPUs discontinued without replacements
>Storage on an all-time high, forcing the use of cloud services
>CPU prices predicted to rise
>Old products being relaunched but still relatively more expensive than they were
I don't think PC Tech has ever gone through such grim times, it's always been exciting to look forward to the future, but now we just wish things were the way they were back then.

Is it truly over?
>>
Why do you care so much about RAM?
Pretty much any task these days can be done with 8GB or less.

And that's still a hell of a lot more than what use to be considered standard.
The N64 had only 4MB but gave us Ocarina of Time. Just stop being lazy and optimize.
>>
Did your old stuff break? I haven't bought a single new pc part in over half a decade and you shouldn't need to unless ur a smelly nextgen gamer
>>
these are the kinds of things people say right before an industry implodes

even if CXMT refuses to scale up and export, we will have a RAM glut in a bout two years

there aren't that many workloads that have switched completely to vector compute yet and Hynix/Samsung retooling away from DDR5 to DDR6 is going to cause a huge demand from hyperscalers as they begin to switch

the big problem is going to be CPU supply as weird as that sounds
>>
>>110108213
Greedy corporations have finally hold the userbase hostage and force it to pay premiums for inferior service.
>>
Good. If tech tards need a million GPUs to train AGI then they should have to pay the supply/demand tax. I can use my current graphics card indefinitely.
>>
>>110108236
Gaymers really need to stfu about these sort of things.

The point is that everyone is getting locked out of new tech. Some of us want to test drive AI locally and dick around with these new technogies, not speedrun OoT like an autist for decades.

One day just like that, we'll be back.

All the vibe coding jeets have shat up basic internet and operating system services so much over the last few years you need 16gb just to open two youtube tabs in chrome
>>
>>110108236
I'm actually kinda hoping they're forced to stop relying on selling games with latest and greatest I haven't been impressed with anything gamer tech related since 3d acceleration

Developers aren't going to start optimizing. They don't give a shit. Basic web browsing now eats up 5+ gigabytes of RAM and it's only getting worse (I was seeing closer to 3.5 GB before the recent Firefox update).

> Pretty much any task these days can be done with 8GB or less.

No.

The page https://github.com/NVlabs/Sana/tree/sol-engine/models/minimax_h3/Sol-H3-ComfyUI says “at least 90 GB of host RAM”.

gayming niggers should just rope
gaming is a poison and should be heavily restricted
>b-b-but im not a gaymer!!!
"old" hardware works perfectly, it's not 2010 anymore, you can run a computer with parts from 2015 and not notice a single hitch, why do you think companies now are making shit up for their requirements like fucking "tpm 2.0" and other retarded shit?

Which computer hobbies you can't do with 2015 hardware? Gooning to low parameter next word predictors? Staring at path traced shadows?

I live in 2026, soon to be 2027. I was 8 years old in 2015.

The future is now, unc

There are only a half dozen games actually worth playing and Minecraft is one of them.

I accept your concession.
The high performance category nowadays is pointless because even mid-range hardware from a decade ago can do anything any actual computer hobbyist could ever want.
The core issue happens when you conflate being a faggot gayming nigger who slurps shit about le ebin real time shadowz and act like that's what the hobby actually is about. How I feel so secure in knowing that's what you care about? Because the only two things "old" hardware can't do nowadays are LLMs and graphically demanding games. The former you'd be better off paying for a service on the few times you actually need to engage with it (or, if you can make money out of it, INVESTING into better hardware for local models, which then turns the price issue into a matter of ROI) and the latter means you never cared about computers to begin with, just buy a playstation.
>>110113017
All three playable on decade old hardware.
>>
>>110108213
This is time of tech renaissance
We have tech debt of about 40 years stacked upon our shoulders
Software has been kicked down the road and subsidized with Moores law. You literally had people bragging about making shitty code that would waste RAM and CPU usage just because they were lazy to code it better and then said "oh we will wait for a year and computers will get 2 times faster so no issues".

LLMs are able to reverse engineer, rewrite and optimize the code faster and faster. We will see future of everything being able to run on single board computer. Multicore processors will be utilized 100%.
>>
>>110113039
They werent playable on decade old hardware when the hardware was new and the emulators were new a decade ago. Compatibility did not get good until about 4 years ago when 5 Ghz CPUs became the standard

you're just a fucking retard
sure, pic rel is 200€ more expensive than what I paid for a year ago but if you can afford monthly payments for some cloud bullshit you can afford 600€ (or the equivalent of your meme currency)
I agree with you on SSDs, RAM and GPUs

It's amazing how a technology board can be so up its own asshole it struggles to understand technological use cases. I guess that's what happens when actual technolo/g/ists are chased off by election tourists and general newcancer.

The point is you are WRONG
Proven WRONG ans you refuse to accept that 15 year old hardware is eWaste
>>
>>110113077
you realize there's a lower bound to kalmogorov complexity right? you can't actually optimize something infinitely. you will never be able to run a trillion-parameter 8-bit LLM on an SBC unless SBCs get a fuckload more powerful.
>>
>>110113295
My point is that the time for optimizing software is now.
You will store all your data in irrational number storage to lower the disk usage
Your RAM and CPU usage will be so optimized that old phones will become trendy again
For trillion parameter 8bit LLMs there will be a small FPGA based PCIE adapters giving you 15 thousand tokens/s
That FPGA will be 1000 times cheaper than a GPU that was used to train it and it will be completely designed by LLM that uses it

Your mind is clouded by what was to ignore the possibility of what can be
Stay in the dust of cynical pessimism and being a naysayer

Why do you care so much about air conditioning?
Pretty much any comfot level these days can be done with just a ceiling or reciprocating desk fan.

And that's still a hell of a lot more than what used to be considered standard.
Pre-electrification only had passive cooling techniques for construction, or servants using manual fans. Just stop being lazy and adjust.
>>
>>110113377
this but unironically, imagine being dependant on air conditioning
>>
>>110113385
most of the world lives outside of the northern latitudes that are temperate, fag

aircon is very nearly mandatory for anything approaching a reasonable quality of life
>>
>>110113440
theres probably 1 air conditioning per 1 billion arabs and i dont think theyre all suffering
its a matter of adaptation, really, youd be fine after a month there

funny because expensive expensive

>>

what part of own nothing and be happy did you not understand? personal computing with local hardware is being deliberately killed off so you're easier to control.
