I've got a home server, 3x16TB drives for storage etc.
I've got a monitor with a Thunderbolt dock, 2.5Gb Ethernet, my 4k TV is daisy-chained off the monitor.
All I have to do is plug a single USB-C cable and everything just works.
If I didn't play games I wouldn't even keep a desktop PC.

My stepmom tried to buy a desktop pc but she says she won't do it again because it was too much work buying all the pieces and then she couldn't use 2 screens like she wanted because the mb she bought only has 1 hdmi port and her monitors only have hdmi inputs then my dad bought a vga to hdmi converter thinking it would fix the problem but that resulted in lower quality video so I advised to buy a gpu. the result is that the newly bought desktop is sitting at her desk unplugged and she's using her laptop plugged to a second monitor and kb+mouse

Having battlestation is still a status symbol and something people want. Every streamer having one goes a long way. Getting a battelstation for young people was always a big hill to overcome. Prebuilt sales are (or were before RAMfuckery) doing extremely well. So it's not the hardware dying, it's the DIY-space.

Also enthusiast tinkering, raspberry pis etc, is coming from below and up now. The DIY space just shifted away from the gam3r/high performance space which was always locked down anyways and won't fundamentally change until risc v or china does something about it. So don't doomcoom too much.

But it was dumb, I should have just built and SFF desktop I didn't even move around that much and I stopped bothering to take my laptop with me after the first few months, of course it didn't help that it was a gaming laptop that weighed like 3kg and was just loud and shitass hot all the time. In my family we've always had PCs since the mid 80s when my dad bought a second hand amstrad, my dad had his work issued separate desktop in his study, and work issued laptop.

I'm starting to see this be a huge problem on modern laptops. They're a fucking mess because usbc is already unreliable and now they are making all power route through the battery and using the battery as a capacitor bank for cpu boosting voltage spikes. A lot of thinner laptops do this and they will not even turn on if you pull out the battery. So you have usbc charging into the motherboard which has lpddr on it, the power ONLY charges the battery, the battery powers the laptop. The battery has safety circuitry in it. I have a yoga in my shop right now that's 1 year 5 weeks old and it refuses to charge the battery so it refuses to turn on. It has a power button on the side so my guess is the power button was being mashed in the bag, drained the battery to 0% (which I tested at 0.014v) and now it refuses to charge the laptop because the safety circuitry inside the battery had deemed it unsafe. That's just a theory because the replacement battery is in the mail. If that doesn't work I'll have to tell the customer I can send it to a board shop or it's dead jim if that isn't cost effective and I'll just clone your drive to another one without this horrible design flaw.
