How do I learn music theory when I don't understand a single video or tutorial
>>110118684learn the major scale and then start noodling from that
>>110118684Lock in on a genre you want to emulate first. Blip bloops for example don't use much music theory at all. It's all effects driven
>>110118684start with the fundamentals like in the lessons at musictheory.netthen learn to play a beginner piece and you will know what the sheet music says
>>110118684buy yourself a keyboardit won't really click in at all unless you have an instrument you can use to play along
used to do touhou-like game tracks 10 years ago with the Roland SC VST and FL20haven't touched a DAW since thengot a bit nostalgic listening to the tracks I madeis it worth it to check any other DAW nowadays? preferably with a good piano roll, good MIDI support (CC/parameters editor) and preferably open source?
>>110118684learn the fundamentals, specially what makes a composition tell a specific story. Music is more complex than "sad" chords and "happy" chords. Compositions tell stories, with different spectrums and hues, and some of them may be as complex and deep as a person. Don't get too heavy on the theory though, it's not like you'll be a classical composer. Just enough so that you can chew your own food without choking, so that you can get a tasteThen move on to your whatever composer/genre you liketry to recreate their compositions, dissect them, chew them thoroughly, spill their innards and see what inside. Hell, even change them a bit and try to see how small changes make it sound different and tell a different storyit's actually very fun when you get the hang of itAt some point you start develop a certain feel for it, and then you can start experimenting with your own original compositionsI have abstracted the minute exact details but I hope you get the message clearlytl;dr: music theory is just a toolbox, nothing else and nothing more. Don't think it will magically make you a better composer, you need to get the hang of how to use it properly too
>>110118684Notes are separated by distance, the steps are either 1 (semi-tone), or 2 (tone). The first note of a scale is called it's root.Major scale for example is:Root-Tone-Tone-Semitone-Tone-Tone-Tone-(Semitone)Octave And repeats up the keyboard or down the guitar neckMinor scale:Root-Tone-Semitone-Tone-Tone-Semitone-Tone-(Tone)OctaveIf you look closely, these two scales have the same pattern, just start at different places in the pattern. That's what's called a parallel key. There's 15 key signatures in total on a keyboard: (there more "modes" like Mixolydian, Dorian, Phrygian, and Lydian but these aren;t important)M is for Major, m is for minorSo if you see something like Cm7 or Gmdim9 these are just telling you what chords to play, and you can also do their inversionFirst one:C minor 7th; 4 notes: C, D sharp, G, A sharpG minor dim 9th: dim means diminsihed and so in music theory you can take the perfect 5th (the 5th note in the scale) and augment or diminish it a semitone (raise or lower). So the notes are G, minor third (A#), D flat, and A (note after the octave G)Most of what you find yourself doing with music theory is discovering chords and inversions in a scale, that make good jazzy chord progressions, and doing arpreggios. You can discover music too, and it may feel more magical to make a beat from ignorance and enjoying sounds instead of using theory.
prod is deadlong live /dmp/
hmm we're back
>>110118684Compose 10 songs by only using the black notes on a piano roll. You'll figure it out.
I made a lil loop that I think is kinda niceThoughts?Worth arranging into a full track?https://voca.ro/1cn7UhezbMwY
>>110118684You suck it the fuck up and learn anyway because AI can't make real music. It can generate, code and art but for some reason not music.

currently trying to recreate the song The Gathering Storm from the Skyrim soundtrack. jeremy soule's instrument/midi articulation is actually insane considering he made the song (and most of the soundtrack) all through midi & samples
Posted this on the vibecoding thread but I'm working on a polymetric sequencer plugin that sends midi table. Really like the sequencer thats in Pigments for its intuitive layour so wanted to do something similar but free to use with any instrument or feature. So far have implemented: >Key and Scale selector, including microtonal scales and a Free 0.1 mode. Added a bunch of scales into it which effects what pitch values can be set (and changes the ones already set to be the diff modes while letting you go back) >Lanes for GATE ON, Pitch, Velocity, Slide, Gate Length, Aftertouch Pressure (with glide length to show how long it takes to get to the value), along with up to 8 CCs for mapping to instrument parameters like filters and whatnot (altho you need a CC mapper to make it work), Vibrato/VDepth, modwheel, sustain pedal toggles, and program change to switch between diff channels. >Also each individual lane has its own clock divider, can you let select the note type>you're able to add pages and scroll through them individually too. >Swing per lane as well , >Experimental visuals that respond to shit in the sequencer >A dark mode that you can do by doing ctrl+scrollwheel, ripping off VCV rack with it but its max comfyI've uploaded it to GITHUB but its not fully done yet and I need to sort through the slopcode and nonsense comments, its working really well on my machine though and already able to do lots of sick sound design with it Stuff I want to add: >Chord lanes, or maybe make it so if you right click a Pitch Cell you can switch it to a Chord and potentially even input the chord manually with your keyboard and be able to specify the style of which the notes are played with diff velocity/poly aftertouch variations>Euclidean Generator >Ability to make the sequencer run in random (limited to the lanes length)>Ratchet>Probability?>anime mascot >my schizopost manifesto on the nature of reality What other features should I add?
