>>110125621except it is a dvd, just a different kind of dvd. it is also ram, in that is supports random writes (it's hard-sectored unlike most optical formats)
But how can a 12 centimeter disk fit 4.7 gigabytes? Can't it only fit 12 centibytes?
>>110124391You'd think BDXL discs would be cheaper considering they're 2010 technology.

>>110129402A correction to my earlier answer. While checking sources, I found that independent research is less rosy about BD-R than the manufacturer estimates I gave you. The Canadian Conservation Institute says the longevity of recordable CDs, DVDs and BD-Rs is uncertain, and libraries and archives widely distrust them. It also cites a study finding that BD-Rs, both dye and non-dye types, were overall less stable than some CD-Rs and DVD±Rs (Iraci 2018). https://www.canada.ca/en/conservation-institute/services/conservation-preservation-publications/canadian-conservation-institute-notes/longevity-recordable-cds-dvds.htmlSounds like I am fine tho. Might make a second copy

>>110125609Same, blew my mind too. >A small and portable mini "hard drive" device that plugs into a usb port and allows you to read AND write? Whoa... It's the future! Granted hard discs did this too but they were stupidly small and by the time I used a flash drive (it was called a jump drive) hard discs were used by nobody anymore.
>>110130128thx
Years ago I bought some DVD-RAM discs because supposedly they are extremely reliable, more so than DVD+/-R. I found that some photos from 2008 got corrupted somehow, I dig up the disc where they're backed up.Turns out the disc has tiny holes in the reflective layer that render half of it unreadable, the half where the photos I need are.Thankfully I had another back up, but god damn. What I want to say is check your old discs, Anons and make backups.
>>110130312I have heard of disc rot and still haven't seen it one time. I know it happens but it must be rare. They must be manufacturing defects which isn't the fault of the technology. I had an ssd drive fail on me in less than a year. It's not inherent in the technology, that was a manufacturing defect.
>>110125609I remember a teacher telling me about his 64 MB stick while I was bringing a box of 5 CD-RWs to school to burn all the shit me and the homies downloaded. Then some child one or two classes below me stole the box. Only got it back because one of my friends burned porn on one disc and the thief's parents saw it.
>>110130332>that was a manufacturing defectThat doesn't really make a difference when you're trying to recover data from the disc and half the sectors are unreadable. I had 3 of those Panasonic DVD-RAM discs and it was only this one that had a problem and only in the part that mattered, what are the fucking odds...
>>110130312Still unsure if good or bad that I deleted all my photos when I depressed and read marie kondo.Kinda good tho. You never look at them anyways and they are jusst a burden. MEMORIES MATTERno??/
>>110130332>I have heard of disc rot and still haven't seen it one time.I've seen hundreds of cases of disc rot. You have no idea how bad it used to be.
>>110124131>4.7 niggerbytes baby
>>110130403I am a sentimental guy so for me they matter, a lot. Everything is in IMMICH now, the digital photos go back to 2005. The photos that are on film are also digitised using the original negatives, turns out the printing techniques they had back then weren't perfect and there's a lot more detail on the film itself.Home videos are more of a challenge but we're getting there. This will be a treasure that my whole family can enjoy for as long as I live and hopefully after that.
>>110124208no one ever used that shit, dvd-r was king
>>110130481Because it never got as cheap as DVD.
>>110130312i don't see any holes in your pic. you do know the regular pattern you see there is what dvd-ram is supposed to look like, right? they're the sector boundaries
>>110130744I'm not retarded, the holes were tiny and you could only see them if there's strong light shining through the disc.
Reminder to backup family photos and vids on DVDs because it is the most reliable storage media to last decades and potentially centuries. Literally better than physical photo albums.
>>110124208soon to never be made again
>>110130429now why would you say such thing? hmm?
>>110130764shoulda used dvdisaster (pads disc images with additional ECC before burning so you can use any otherwise unused space for extra protection)
>>110130943I used it to try and recover the disc, but it's not like I can go back to 2009 and re-record it.
>>110130369I had some mini-CD-RWs.They felt great to carry around.
>>110131316They're cute, I don't know why but optical media still feels like "the future" to me. I didn't even have a stereo that could play CDs growing up, my first PC didn't have a CD drive either.
>>110131276yea, you could try ddrescue, or other drives if you have any others that support dvd-ram, i've had luck before reading bad discs with different drives.>>110131316i had a couple of those sony mini dvd-rw's they made for their camcorders which had that super hard coating on the back, almost impossible to scratch. i think they used the same coating later on bluray but i'm not sure since i literally never ended up buying any bluray stuff
>>110131338I tried a few different drives, I was considering applying some sort of reflective coat/paint on the disc etc.In the end what saved the day was the fact that those photos were also saved on my parents old PC, which I had backed up on my home server (though I never bothered to inspect the contents of what's backed up before this incident).
>>110131344close call, then. nothing like even the threat/feeling of losing something important to make you rethink your backup solution
>>110131356Most people don't back up, some even consider Facebook and other social media to be a back up for their photos.
>>110131338They were so based.>>110131333>I don't know why but optical media still feels like "the future" to me.Because they are so flat and cheap. You could stick one of those business card sized mini CDs onto a pamphlet and distribute data that way. You could send them in an ordinary letter. You don't have to get it back, because they are so cheap.Flash drives never had the same appeal to me, because you usually need them back. If you lend someone a CD-R and he is a nigger and doesn't give it back... who cares?
>>110131429No I mean the way they refract light makes them look futuristic, even if CDs are like 40 years old, combine it with a small form-factor and it's peak sci-fi technology.
>>110131429it's still like magic you can fit 1.4GB on a tiny disc of plastic with an aluminium film glued to the top that costs hardly anythingand yea, they were great for sharing stuff since you can just burn something and give them the disc to keep. nowadays you can get very cheap bulk shitty usb drives that can be given away but only really recently, there was a long period where only optical discs could do that>>110131443thin-film interference will always look cool
>>110131491>nowadays you can get very cheap bulk shitty usb drives that can be given awayThe cheapest ones are about $ 4.50.Meanwhile with CD-R, you bought a 25 disk coil for 8 bucks or so?If tech for this purpose would have evolved, we would have cheap durable SD cards (full sized, not micro) for 25 cents now.
>>110131687you can get them cheaper than that, though not as cheap.like a random ebay listing here for 100 of them;256MB, A$162, A$1.62ea, A$6.48/GB512MB, A$190, A$1.90ea, A$3.80/GB2GB, A$277, A$2.77ea, A$1.39/GB4GB, A$315, A$3.15ea, A$0.79/GB8GB, A$335, A$3.35ea, A$0.42/GB16GB, A$390, A$3.90ea, A$0.24/GBwhile your cd's are 32c/disc, each disc is only 700MB (yes i know there's other ways you can format them), that's 46c/GB, which is actually more expensive per GB if you work it out that way, and really, these days you're not fitting a lot on a cd anymore. still the king when it comes to small stuff though, what if you /do/ want to physically hand someone a 100MB file? the usb drives don't get very cheap per unit, even the tiny ones
cd
if hdd prices continues to go up i have no choice but to start burning out bd-r of my movies when drives start failing
Do we still get coasters from burning discs? I used a ton of CD/DVDs but never really got into the habit of burning them.
>>110132029With modern codecs you could easily recompress them and burn them onto DVDs, and they will still look significantly better than streaming services. Permanently storing BD-REMUX versions of films is overkill.
>>110133016i would prefer to play the discs on a 4k/bluray player in the living room.if i have to spend time to burn out these movies i would prefer they could just work
>>110133451so look up what codecs your bd player supports and use that? keeping uncompressed bds is straight up autism unless you for whatever reason have more storage space than you know what to do with so you keep them to encode them using some codec that may or may not come out in the future. realistically though h264/h265 is all you need. if you put your encodes on a local share av1 is cool too if you can afford the compute power to encode all your stuff in it since i imagine more and more devices will come out with hardware decoders for it.
>>110130312>>110130370>>110130764Out of curiosity were you using the newer higher speed ones? I've heard of a few issues with some of the later generations near the end of life when the quality control started slacking. The old 1x and 2x ones (that had smaller capacities) are functionally indestructible in my experience. I used 8 dvd-ram disks as my rotating offsite backups for company financials for over a decade, and they were not treated particularly well. Used them for a shitty camera system I ran on worksites to catch employees stealing tools for 10 years after that (full write every 2 or so days).Only retired them because I have way better camera and security equipment these days.
>>110135615They were Panasonic 2-3x speed discs, I think I bought and burnt them in 2009 since the photos on them were from 2008.
>>110124208"Verbatim"I will be taking some time to appreciate that name.
>>110133016>Permanently storing BD-REMUX versions of films is overkill. For now!Back in the day, when you had the choice between getting a reencode that fits on a CD-R ($ 0.25), or a remux for the DVD-R ($ 1.50), most chose the CD-R, because it looks just as good on the DVD player for the shitty TV.All those 700 MB reencodes are unwatchable now.
>>110136296The problem is that the "now" doesn't look like it's about to change any time soon, hard drives are twice as expensive as they used to be. There's also the matter of "good enough", those 700MB RIPs were shit even back then, even on standard definition CRTs the low bit rate caused visible blocking/artefacting. Comparing a 1:1 blu-ray rip to the same file converted to 1/4 of its size with a modern codec like AV1 is closer to downsampling a 24-bit 96KHz flac down to 16-bit 44.1KHz. I still download the absolute highest quality when I want to watch a film, but if I'm going to store it permanently so my parents can put something on to watch on Jellyfin I ain't doing that.
>>110135813Yep, that would be the later batches with the QC issues. That sucks, man.DVD-RAM was such an amazingly good format. Real shame that it fucked up the branding and caused confusion. It was years ahead of flash drives until the 2010s for most stuff.
Who else gave their Windows Vista PC a BSOD on boot for installing Nero?
>>110124131>HDDs are expensive>SSD prices went through the roof>bluray discs are expensive and ew companies produce them>DVDs are cheap but store 10GBs maxWhat a shitty state of things Fuck crypto and fuck AI companies.
