Now that the dust has settled, emacs or vim?

KWrite.
I don't need to turn a text editor into a fucking calendar when I can just look at my taskbar. Ricing a text editor of all things is like buying floral pattern toilet paper.

Please explain to me 1 necessary tweak I should have to make to a text editor just to paste something from my calculator app: not 2, not 3, not 4, just 1. And if such a capability IS the default functionality anyway, then you retards are wasting your fucking time.

Please explain to me how Vim or Emacs will improve my ability to jot down groceries compared to KWrite. Because if your computer gets in the way of doing something as simple as this, then your computer is shit and you can't get real work done on it apart from posting in desktop screenshot threads.

Based. nano when im lazy. simple as
>>
i just use vscode
>>
Emacs is forever. Vim is good to know but I wouldn't use it over emacs. Vscooooode is fine if you're a normie/retard.

emacs + evil = the best of both worlds. I get to use the Elisp ecosystem while using modal editing.

you guys should try helix
it's super neat
>>
>>110126641
What's the helix equivalent of emacs' `M-x ielm`?
>>
>>110126069
SPBP
>>
>>110125981
neither, vi is sufficient
>>
>>110126743
try ed noob
>>
>>110126641
I switched from nvim to helix just as an experiment like 6 months ago and I'm still using it now. I doubt I could go back
>>
>>110126682
frankly there isn't
the selling point of helix for me is that its entirely sufficient the way it is
you basically install helix, an lsp or two, and nudge a couple of settings and then you're done
i could easily imagine thinking helix was insufficient for whatever i wanted to do in which case i would simply use something else
>>
>>110127062
same. I actually don't like the way helix inverts the way selection and commands work and I really prefer nvims block selection mode over helix's multiple-cursors system. Helix does feel way faster on my x230 tho and most things feel better in general. I'll be sticking with it for the foreseeable future

nano

In terminal I just use nano because I never felt like learning one of the tryhard text editors.

Neovim.
>>
>>110125981
Depends on use case - vim for text editing, emacs for getting carpal tunnel syndrome

Just use echo and tee plebs
>>
>>110127110
i think i'm also super lucky that i actually love selection first
it just makes more sense in my head
multiple cursors can sometimes be a little bit like balancing on a tightrope and i definitely got pissed off at them at the beginning
>>
>>110125981
emacs if you're a giga nerd, and actually do some heavy programming
vim if you are a "nerd" or a casual programmer.

i'm a casual programmer, if i was more dedicated, i'd go emacs.
but vim works and the learning curve is ez

i need elegance AND practicality
all of them fall short

nino seems ok, but i haven't used it much to make a concrete decision.

If you use rlwrap you can get command history in ed and with rlwrap's outfilter you can add syntax-highlighting with GNU Source-highlight.

When I have the time I'd like to write my own rlwrap filter that adds some (limited) lsp support to ed just for the heck of it. rlwrap even works with cat > file.txt so theoretically you could extend cat with a filter to make it a more full fledged editor but at that point you might as well just write your own editor from scratch ofc.

Vscode, because the computer I'll be using will mostly be running windows anyway. And the servers I'll be SSHing into will probably only have vi/nano but that doesn't really matter since you'll just use scp or rsync to local anyway
>>
i use vi because client's servers don't have any fancy text editor.

when r u sshin and when scp? I failed the ssh class ;_;
what I suspect is that u ssh for all kind of file modifications not requiring file transfer and scp for specially large file transfers
>>
>>110130687
>when r u sshin
When you need to access a server through shell
>when scp
When you need to upload or download files to/from a server. But for large files, use rsync. The only advantage of scp is that it's less typing tho
>>
>>110125981
I always judge programs by their startup time and whether I can use them with one hand. Both fail miserably.

is modal worth it? i use the evil mode but i am wondering if default keybinds + CUA mode is better

like i know the vim keybinds but i dont know if they really are that efficient over CUA, and you dont have to context switch when you go to the browser etc

i often times end up staying in insert mode and using arrow keys to navigate anyway...

>>110130955
you can "cheat" this in emacs by using emacsclient to have instant startup times
>>

>>
>>110126069
by that logic why wouldnt you use vim? if all you do is just edit text, KWrite is too bloated for your usecase, you dont even need a GUI
>>
>>110131186
>KWrite is too bloated for your usecase
Why would it be? It's part of the desktop, has mouse controls, all the shortcuts you'd want, lets you drag and drop files or open a file dialog, and all the other niceties of a GUI.
>>
>>110130924
I bliv that scp has advantages over ssh file transfer, google it
>>
>>110126641
Why? Claude does everything for me.
>>
>>110131207
if your goal is jotting down groceries then you dont need a desktop at all, just use vim and a tty. anything else is just bloat that gets in the way between you and getting real work done, isnt this what you said?
>>
>>110130924
>>110131236
I googled it, apparently it doesn't at least at first glance
>>
>>110131266
A desktop lets me launch KWrite via a mouse, and it also allows me to look at the damn things which I am making note of.
>>
>>110131520
usecase for mice?
anyway the point is if you want to be smug and say "i dont NEED xyz" then the only natural conclusion is to use vim and terminal centric workflow which is what most vimfags end up doing.

you use kwrite, vscode, emacs for the conveniences beyond text editing, for you it might be mouse drag and drop, for an emacsfag it may be ielm
>>
>>110131616
I don't need a calendar to take notes. I do however need a mouse so I can highlight things, scroll, move the caret, or open files without typing in a bunch of commands.
>>
>>110131646
Something that vim does
>>
>>110131000
For people like me who have accumulated over a decade of vim muscle memory, having a solid vim emulation in emacs was a godsend. If you're not already all-in on modal editing, you don't have to force yourself to go modal. Use whatever style feels good to you.
>>
>>110125981
what do you mean “now that the dust has settled” anon? those are veeeery old technologies and most people made up their minds about it one way or the other a looong time ago
