If it's based on Ubuntu just update via the Ubuntu updater or if that's not there then update the sources.list and update via apt.

Probably though you can open a terminal and type do-release-upgrade that's the standard CLI way of updating Ubuntu

Gentoo, Rocky, Devuan, Guix

I installed Gentoo for the first time. Oddly satifying, even if it took a few hours. It's kind of obvious but having to sit through compilation is such a good motivator to actually learn and customize your system to your needs. You really feel it when you are compiling dist-kernel and you see a bunch of shit you know you don't need. It's so glaring I'm not sure I would be comfortable going back to a non-source based distro.

>>110152885
Fedora is good. Debian is also good. Everything else sucks.

>>110153365
I was totally bored by Debian and already a long time Gentoo runner when I decided to totally erase Debian out of my remaining systems. Best decision ever made.
Later on I tried Arch but did not understood the need while already on Gentoo. I never understood which gap Arch fills beside producing good Wiki pages.

>>110153223
I have a gentoo iso sitting in my downloads folder just gathering dust.
I think I'll try it, instead of trying to install useless unsupported memes like Apartheid Linux (how tf am I supposed to partition my disks without fdisk/cfdisk?)

So what's that "next kernel version causes black screen with amd gpu" thing? Should I wait for the consecutive kernel version or what?

I've been wanting to move to linux for months, maybe even a year now but I never do because I'm afraid I'll have do use something that is windows only and then be forced to format back to windows and also that I wouldn't like the linux settings.
so I was thinking, I should just make a VM with cachyos on this windows machine and use it until I get used to it, get all settings and configurations done and then save the cfg files and install linux bare metal.
But the actual question I have is: how well do windows 10 VMs run on linux? because I'd probably need a VM to run whatever .exe I wouldn't be able to do with wine, basically how well does windows VMs work inside linux? I do have enough ram for the VMs to work well.
amd cpu + gpu btw, 5800x3d, 9700xt

>>110152885
Getting tired in what way? I ended up on Fedora at end of my distro hopping journey myself. It's a very solid distro that requires minimal maintenance from user so if you are looking for something more hands-off than Arch then it's a very good choice unless you are deathly allergic to corporate involvement. A reliable and mostly up to date daily driver but not very exciting.
If you are tired in the "I want a new learning project" kind of sense then Gentoo would probably be your best bet. Also excellent distro to be on but hands-on instead of hands-off. Maybe try a new init system while you're at it.

That's how I feel
Gentoo is convenient I can easily patch programs and customise them to my needs, I can have imagemagick not build the gui or have audacious only build one of the gui toolkits it uses, can also easily build a system without wayland at all for example.
I used to compile a custom kernel but I recently went back to dist-kernel and for now I'm using /etc/kernel/config.d/ to customise kernel modules. Find it a lot less manual than building it completely and i have modprobed-db running every 6 hours so if I ever go back to a custom kernel I can just use that and my old .config as a base.
Gentoo is really great and I learnt a lot about scripting (writing ebuilds) and general system compilation and configuration through it. Also VCS with a custom local repo (I'm a nocoder so I only knew the basics beforehand for the most part)

Is dual booting not an option for you? I installed Linux on a second SSD on my system that initially only had Windows 10 on it, thinking I can go back there if I need to but I never found any reason to go back myself and after more than 6 months I formatted the Windows drive for more space to use on Linux. Turns out there are very few Windows apps I actually need. It's more like I was using those apps because I was on Windows and not because they are the best. And for the very few Windows programs I still want to use WINE/Proton works fine. What might need Windows (a VM is fine) is firmware configuration software.

I did set up a Win10 VM. It works just like a normal Win10 installation but it's not smooth like the host OS for me, interacting with it feels a little laggy. I think there might be a way to pass the GPU to the virtual machine to make it snappier but I never looked into it since I never did anything much on it other than change my gaymer mouse settings.

>>110153223
Gentoo always felt intimidating and I am happy on Fedora but I recently got a new PC and my old one is gathering dust (keeping it because in this economy and hardware situation it doesn't hurt to have a backup machine or two) so I think I will make a project of installing Gentoo on it and seeing how I feel about after using it some.

One of the fun parts is running a windows-only program and seeing it actually run or run even better on gnu/linux.
If only your CPU had an integrated GPU, it'd be a lot smoother if you wanted to use a VM. Do you have an old GPU lying around, even an rx 480/580? You could potentially passthrough with it.

>I'm afraid I'll have do use something that is windows only and then be forced to format back to windows
dual booting and vms. most applications don't need a gpu so a regular vm will do. if you need your gpu you should look at dual booting. i have two 512gb sata ssds for example. one has windows on it while the other has linux on it. my bios lets me choose favorites to pin settings to the start page so i can disable one or the other quickly for example. lets me distro hop and other stuff without having to worry about messing anything up.
>and also that I wouldn't like the linux settings
kde has every setting that windows lacks, hides or that has to be changed via the registry.
>I should just make a VM with cachyos on this windows machine and use it until I get used to it, get all settings and configurations done and then save the cfg files and install linux bare metal.
you can but i don't find linux vms all that useful. watching youtube? shitposting? what else is there to do? yeah you can look trough the settings a bit but that can be done on a regular install as long as you don't use arch and don't know how to set it up.

I'm using a systemd/Linux router PC with the following setup
>NFtables for masquerading IPv4 (no IPv6 connectivity)
>hostapd for Wi-Fi access point
>systemd-networkd sets up a bridge interface which enslaves one local wired Ethernet card + the Wi-Fi interface
>systemd-networkd also provides DHCP service
>systemd-resolved listens to 0.0.0.0 and provides local DNS
The last part gets all buggy at times and effectively stops resolving. Is this to be expecting and am I misusing the software somehow? The router's been running 11 days now and seems to work, for now.
If problems keep persisting, should I switch to something like Unbound or DNSmasq? If I'd switch to DNSmasq, should I also use it for DHCP or leave it to systemd?
>>110153223
The kernel part is really something else. Usually any random piece of software comes with zero to dozen configuration options while the kernel has literal thousands. And it's a magnitude worse as with some options you got to pick between yes/no/module instead of a simple yes/no.
Some feature being a module instead of baked into the image can prevent booting in a situation where you boot without an initramfs for example.

I'm glad I don't have to deal with this on Arch. On the flip side, I do have to deal with it in small bites when programs get breaking changes, but they're staggered (one at a time, and not often at all), rather than hitting me all at once.

Coming from Windows as a refugee, after not liking Zorin OS, I'm now two weeks into using Arch Linux. The learning experience so far has actually been fun, and it's surprisingly stable as a daily driver. It sounds odd to say about Arch, but so far everything just works - gaming, daily tasks, etc. I have it almost where I want it to be, but no OS will ever be 100% perfect and tinker-proof.
My only main question I have for the Arch users - how often do you use Flatpak? I have 8 installed programs for it and 973 from pacman. Just curious to see how many anons use Flatpak.

>>110157882
Arch's whole deal makes it that you don't really need Flatpak a majority of the time. If you want containerization you just need to install firejail or bubblewrap and run programs with those.

>>110157882
>it's surprisingly stable as a daily driver. It sounds odd to say about Arch, but so far everything just works
Yep, that's literally Arch desu. It is by far the most "just works" distro I've used.
>how often do you use Flatpak?
Literally never, I do everything I can to avoid it. Flatpak introduces headaches I don't want to deal with and 100% of the time anything I might get from Flatpak is either in the native repo, the AUR, or in the worst case scenario exists as an appimage.
I would strongly avoid using Flatpak unless you find you have literally no choice. It's a very all or nothing ecosystem, either move all your applications to Flatpak, or none of them.

>>110157882

>>110157933
That's my experience so far. It just FEELS great to use, and I think the fact that it's not a distro based off of a distro (eg Zorin being an Ubuntu reskin) also helps.

>>110158048
>I'm just hoping that half won't break anything as apparently they're integrated into Arch? (archinstall stuff)
Idk what you mean by this but if you swap them out for native packages the worst that would happen is they'd initialize fresh config directories, since flatpak has special snowflake directories instead due to its sandboxing. You can probably manually migrate them if you want to.

>>110158068
I'll give it a try in a moment. I made a backup as well just in case.

>>110158081
Backup of what exactly? I wouldn't be overly worried, removing software doesn't remove user configuration directories, worst case you can just reinstall the flatpak packages and it'll be like they never changed (unless flatpak is legitimately retarded and does nuke configs I guess).

can something break if i uninstall gnome-software?

>>110157882
Arch is very "stable" in the Windows user understanding of that term, but you get the latest software which often has bugs. Nvidia driver is a great example of that. Having their latest driver (or not having the latest beta driver) made me rage quit nvidia. They always include some nasty bug in their newest driver and then fix it in some beta release that doesn't hit the repos until like a month later and installing the driver from AUR is way too much pain compared to using mesa.
Anyway, I use flatpak for some stuff like Heroic launcher and protonupQT. For the sake of convenience, not much else.

On Gentoo, is it feasible to replace pip with uv for commom use-cases?

I don't do much with it besides the ocasional pip install --user for stuff that isn't in the repos, but that's the thing: the Gentoo wiki strongly warns that it can mess up your system if used wrong. So what is the uv equivalent of these safe user/local installs? Just make a single venv in .local/lib/python-uv and use it to uv install anything I want?

I ask not because I'm eager to jump in on the new thing, but because pip was the only thing blocking a depclean I wanted to run.

>>110160939

Now that KDE is forcing Wayland, how do I deal with the performance losses from XWayland, especially in games? Not all games support Proton's native wayland

Do I have to abandon Fedora KDE now?
They shoved in some new feature called "Virtual Keyboard" that causes major keyboard latency and is impossible to disable. Reminds me of Windows bloat. No one asked for built in "Accessibility" features.
I don't give a fuck if someone is deaf dumb or blind or crippled, it doesn't mean some garbage needs to be enabled by default.

>>110162846
What performance loss? Every time Phoronix has tested this they've found negligible difference and even sometimes slightly faster.

I wouldn't worry about anything that doesn't support the native Wayland backend. Those are bugs in Wine/Proton that will get fixed eventually and XWayland can be used in the meantime.

is there a way to remove the accessibility bs in ubuntu? Is it a package thing?
I'd like to run the 'server' version of the software, and only install the stuff I use. Unfortunately the easiest way for me to do this is start a new install, and just start deleting shit until it's basically hit or miss if I delete something I need.
Like, I don't need the games, and all the 'extra' shit that's added, like the default photo viewer, etc. I want to add my own, and completely remove the old stuff, but I don't know if it will remove dependencies on other programs or not.
on another note, is it easy to just swap out the GUI or window thing? I tried in the past with gnome and plasma and something else. It just installed a ton of shit that overwrote parts of others, and it just turned into a soup of all of them.

I thought KDE deprecating X11 support meant that they'd finally fixed all of the gayland bullshit, but no, I've had to reboot my machine 4 times now in not even in as many days after updating because my screens became unresponsive (and lost game progress) after alt-tabbing, my monitors can't come back correctly after going to sleep, and I got this retarded fucking "screen broken" screen immediately after updating. I get not wanting to maintain two code bases, but they should have fucking dropped Wayland then because it just doesn't fucking work. 20 years later and I'm worse off than I was before it was dreamt up.
I know I'm just screaming into the void and KDE won't go back, so I'm switching to Xfce, but this is just literally insane. I can browse any tech forum and see I'm not the only one having critical issues. How many more decades before everyone guiltily acknowledges that it was a failed System 2 "good idea" and we switch to X12 that was made with $20 of Claude tokens?
Can I fucking pay KDE to maintain X11 support? I will no shit write a check for $10k if that's what it takes.

Lots of good options.
Lutris is good but a bit clunky. Faugus is actually very good in its simplicity and the best way to install Battle.net in 2026. Heroic Launcher is good for the vendors it covers.
If you want to run standalone applications/games just use umu-run directly. Especially if it's a game, you're gonna have better results than invoking WINE directly.

This was an issue with you doing a live upgrade straight from 6.7 to 6.8 without rebooting first.

They've already fixed this in 6.8.1:
https://kde.org/announcements/changelogs/plasma/6/6.8.0-6.8.1/
https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kscreenlocker/-/commit/0eb856189170f6e9cd0f3243605aef43fd537359

Don't do major Plasma updates without rebooting or restarting the session first.

Good distributions, like Fedora, will do offline updates with a reboot required so this never happens in the first place.

On Tumbleweed, dual monitor setup and have been using X11 with unlimited success for the past couple of years on KDE over a few different Nvidia cards. Drivers have occasionally been a ballache, but nothing really difficult besides the last changeover when I had to find the firmware blob to copy and paste. I'm not actually expecting real solutions and it's really just bitching, but Wayland is just buggy piece of shit that needs to be forgotten.

>>110164524
I'm willing to accept the lockscreen being because of not rebooting, but every other issue I've had has been latest updates, rebooting every time.

>>110164535
All your other issues are probably Nvidia. They dragged their feet for years kicking and screaming (the EGLStreams debacle and refusal to adopt GBM was ridiculous) and now their users are paying for it.

None of those issues happen on Intel or AMD. Honestly, if you want Plasma X11 back then install SonicDE:
https://github.com/Sonic-DE
https://www.phoronix.com/news/SonicDE-Improving-KDE-X11-Code

>>110164560
Appreciate the SonicDE suggestion. I looked at it a bit before updating (I really tried to give Wayland another fair shake after my last attempt a year ago), but Tumbleweed doesn't seem to have a package/pattern ready to go for that, so for now I think Xfce is going to be lower effort on my part than figuring out everything I need to do/download for the Plasma fork.

It looks like there's a community repo alveus:SonicDE that should take care of it, but that'll be an experiment for next weekend.

Back to bitching, seems weird that such a seemingly corpo-driven thing as Wayland doesn't support Nvidia well, which is arguably the most corpo GPU vendor.

>>110164621
It's less a case of "$DISTRO supports NVIDIA badly" and more a case of "NVIDIA supports $DISTRO badly".

They have been improving with every new driver release but it's obvious all they care about is AI now. The Linux desktop, and in some cases even Windows too, needs to take a backseat.

>>110164560
None of these happen on shitty ARM GPUs from companies with no money. Nvidia Linux drivers are an insult unless you live in lmao.cpp

>>110164276
>How many more decades before everyone guiltily acknowledges that it was a failed System 2
It wasn't. It's been working fine for years now. The problems it has are almost entirely due to applications and toolkits not switching over, the protocol itself as well as the implementation in most important compositors is fine.

>>110164696
It insists upon itself.

>>110164696
If you limit the scope to "Wayland is just a protocol definition", the concept of "it's working fine" becomes a little bit easier to swallow, but then you have to give up the fact that it's not really an X replacement, as it's been billed since inception, and then that really only changes the argument to "why would $APPLICATION give up a working X11 implementation for a broken Wayland implementation?". But even at that point, it's pretty reasonable to also accept that "the Wayland system", comprising of multiple applications in its stack, is broken compared to "the X system" which very well may be a far smaller stack when X itself does everything. In other words, Wayland "working fine" is purely a semantic argument.

>>110164642
Anecdotal, but I've got a cheap Intel SoC that also doesn't play well with Wayland that still need to use X11 on for screen wake reasons.

isnt it funny how the two main desktop environments, plasma and gnome, removed their x11 sessions but all their apps still support x11
we are still years aways from the wayland switch actually happening

>>110164815

>>110164815
>isnt it funny how the two main desktop environments, plasma and gnome, removed their x11 sessions but all their apps still support x11
Because the toolkit abstracts that like any good toolkit should. Nobody is writing apps that directly target Xlib or Xcb, not unless you're a masochist.

Future versions of GTK may drop X11 but Qt will keep it.

>>110164815
>>110164838
That's another thing; the fact that xwayland is still basically a requirement for any Linux desktop really should be a wakeup call. If it's taken 2 decades and you can't replace what you originally sought out to deprecate, you really just need to go back to the drawing board. I don't really care if X goes away or not, but it's clear Wayland just isn't a good enough successor.

>>110164832
You need to actually be able to encourage people to take that leap by ensuring their shit won't break.

>>110162846
Honestly didn't even read the thread before my initial post, but the fact that I'm not the first person here bitching about it is just fascinating.

>>110164801
>and then that really only changes the argument to "why would $APPLICATION give up a working X11 implementation for a broken Wayland implementation?"
1. X11 is deprecated and will eventually die, you may be able to avoid switching over now, but one day you WILL need to.
2. The implementations aren't broken though, they work. I've been using Wayland daily since around 2020 and every missing feature I once bitched about has been implemented. I'm sure some people are missing some things, but 99% of users are not.

Your post also ignores the numerous issues X11 had, some of the ones that affect regular users is the inability to properly differ refresh rates between displays as the X11 output is one gigantic fake output, and HDR support.

>>110164866
>If it's taken 2 decades and you can't replace what you originally sought out to deprecate, you really just need to go back to the drawing board. I don't really care if X goes away or not, but it's clear Wayland just isn't a good enough successor.
You are literally insane if you think creating a new replacement (which is just going to try and redo everything Wayland did) is a better solution than pushing Wayland on people. I think you're lying, and you do care if X goes away and just want it to stay forever.

>>110164866
>the fact that xwayland is still basically a requirement for any Linux desktop
Not really. wine is the last holdout for most people, and they only kept legacy X stuff so long because xwayland works so well.

>>110164866
>That's another thing; the fact that xwayland is still basically a requirement for any Linux desktop
Except it's not.

Every GTK and Qt app has native Wayland support. Your browser has native Wayland support. Electron based apps (like Discord) have Wayland support.

Pretty much the only thing that still needs XWayland is legacy applications or things like Steam that are blocked on CEF having poor Wayland support (Chromium Embedded Framework has way worse support than Electron. They should really re-write Steam to not depend on such a shitty framework)

>>110164905
Wine has native Wayland support now and you can use it in Proton too. It's used by default if you have no X11 support.

>>110164915
Yeah because it's not finished, but it is legitimately the last thing 90% of users need to eliminate X support.

>>110164938
Depends on your needs really. Fullscreen games work fine, I expect windowed applications if you're running something like Microsoft Office or Photoshop or whatever will probably need more work.

i think its a joke that steam and valve proton still dont have wayland support
and even when they get it, they wont drop x11 support

>>110164893
>X11 is deprecated
"Some people thought X was too old 20 years ago"
It's not deprecated, my desktop worked better 4 days ago on X before I updated to Wayland.
>one day you WILL need to.
Yes, that's fine, as long as it works.
>The implementations aren't broken though, they work.
I mean I really don't know what to tell you, they don't. If it was a "just me" thing and I didn't read anything online about other people having issues I'd just figure out if I had some specific local issues, but it's not that, and I've tried Wayland multiple times on multiple platforms throughout the years. Wayland is not a mature enough ecosystem for how old it is, and is not particularly reasonable to force migration to considering the available alternative.

>Your post also ignores the numerous issues X11 had
It doesn't, I'm not saying X is great, I'm saying that Wayland trades a working (but feature-lacking) system for one that doesn't. The fact that X doesn't support multiple refresh rates is pretty much the sole factor I've kept trying Wayland over and over, but I always go back because it at least works and I don't have to kill my compositor or reboot my machine or do ridiculous tty shenanigans to get my desktop functional again. HDR support I personally actually prefer not to have, because it makes things look like shit, but I know some people actually like it so I don't even count that as a plus or minus.

>>110164901
I really don't think it's insane to stop trying to force feed people shit and cook up a different recipe rather than just try season the shit to make it more palatable. If Wayland was a 5 year old project, I'd say, sure, let them cook, but it's literally almost two decades old. That only NOW a major DE dropped X support, and it's still buggy, is a sign that it failed. How many more years is it reasonable to wait until it's as reliable as what it's tried to replace? If you can't utterly eliminate the competition in 20 years, your software isn't that good.

>>110164915

>>110165001
Right, but if XWayland is present, even on a Wayland environment, the default is to use XWayland. If they believed it ready for Wayland this would not be the case.
I know I've encountered some bugs using the Wayland version personally (for me, related to the cursor and the window's active state). Also, Steam Overlay won't function if the game is run in Wayland mode.

>>110165013
>Also, Steam Overlay won't function if the game is run in Wayland mode.
That's not a Wine/Proton issue but a Steam issue in general, the overlay doesn't even work with native Linux games that support Wayland.

They need to fix that somehow but I don't know how they're going to be able to do it. Some custom Vulkan layer maybe?

So XFCE is better than KDE now?

Nvidia isn't some niche vendor. If the largest GPU vendor didn't work on the old solution, either, that'd be one thing, but a DE vendor really should pay attention to whether or not their decision to support a backend or not negatively impacts a significant amount of users. It's easy to say "my NEW solution is perfect, the world just needs to adopt it", but it's not a reasonable stance when you deliver software downstream of that.

Nvidia is the one that refused to support a standard that was widely adopted. The only people that can ship support for NVIDIA graphics is NVIDIA though.

There is the Nouveau and NVK efforts to provide first-class open source driver support for NVIDIA though which is what distros really care about since it's FOSS, even if users are still married to NVIDIA's blob nobody but them can fix and improve that.

Eventually, not yet though, not if you actually want to use your GPU for gaming, etc.

The last time Phoronix tested it it could play Cyberpunk on low graphics though which is impressive for a driver built completely from scratch with no input from NVIDIA.

Eventually it may be a viable alternative. People are trying to make NVIDIA as good as AMD but NVIDIA are bitches and driver development is hard.

I had a somewhat similar issue on Plasma 6.8 on Arch. Programs and wndows would default to the centre of monitor 0 and never remember their last opened location. If security is you obsession, unless you're willing to autistically research how to actually make your system secure, such as how to encrypt the disk, how to set up many security layers, etc, you ought to use fedora atomic or opensuse tumbleweed. (Atomic can be kind of a pain if you dislike having to reboot your system after anything whatsoever is installed and just not having access to sudo and regular package managers, but that's the price of autistic, corporate grade security)
If you want security and no SystemD (and I do get the desire. It's bullshit that the most secure non-systemd distro, out of the box, is void, and that shit just isn't secure.) you're gonna have to spend some time researching how to manually set up all the security layers that red hat and opensuse already did for you in something like Gentoo or whatever, and considering that that's an effort of days, if not weeks, and that you were going for mint, I earnestly recommend you either stick to fedora atomic or tumbleweed if you really want security and value your time enough to not waste it in OS customization.
There's also secureblue, based on fedora aromic, but I found fedora atomic a pain in the ass to use already, that asked me to reboot just to run fastfetch and to use a new virtual keyboard, and secureblue's supposedly even more autistic about security.
As much as I hate systemd, and I do (some systemd CVE broke my bootloader in an arch virtualization, 12 days after it had been discovered, no fix had been made even though all that was needed was to mask some useless service that ran at boot for no fucking reason and all I could reflect upon was "why the fuck does systemd even control boot? Why all of this bloat can just be masked and shit actually runs better without them? Just do one thing" and proceeded to install artix instead) the corporate world uses it, and the corporate world is the one with the open source security initiative, as their pockets are depending on it.

I must say... Boys, we're ready for the mainstream. Fedora updated to 44 with absolutely no hiccups, the artcraft apps are almost there and it seems like there's no stopping them (I opened Raw therapee, Darktable and GIMP and was so grossed out I uninstalled them). Appimages are bloated. They don't share ant files with eachother.

Nvidia issues no Linux have been known about for over a decade now, there's no excuse to still keep using it

My Arch is now at an optimal point. I just have one more hurdle to solve on KDE Plasma - disabling monitor 2 on my login and lock screen.
What's the best backup program to completely back up my OS and all files? Clonezilla?

How can I make a text list of all my installed Debian packages, Flatpaks, and Appimages, if I needed to hop to another Debian distro for a do-over?

>>110172980
Ask your favourite LLM. It can literally make a script to save/restore that in 5 seconds flat. This is basic stuff.

Wayland sisters!?

>>110173168
>You also have to turn off your compositor to make HDR display at the moment and for proper multimonitor support.

Come back when you have tone-mapping working in a compositor like Compton or whatever compositor people are using nowadays. X11 sissies may disable their compositor and run with screen tearing everywhere but we don't do that on Wayland.

>>110164801
>Anecdotal, but I've got a cheap Intel SoC that also doesn't play well with Wayland
I think IDMs have a lot of room to fuck up with those. N100 boxes ime are all over the place depending on brand and model.

do i need to install the xf86-video-amdgpu package these days?
the arch wiki says its not recommended
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU#Installation
im gonna use xfce btw

I cannot support a Gnome enjoyer. No one should have to use that and I'm sorry you've developed stockholm syndrome.

Best beginner friendly Linux flavor for someone who wants to set up quickly and rarely touch the terminal? Assume someone is trying to leave Windows (not me, I've used Ubuntu since 2007) Is SteamOS's Arch fork open source now? I feel like SteamOS would unironically be the best thing for Windows users given Steam probably wouldn't want users to rely on terminal and has a fully fleshed out system, it'd have proton/wine out of box most likely, and looks to use KDE or Cinnamon so would feel familiar to Windows users. But last I checked it's only on Steam Deck and only the older Debian fork is open.

>>110173464
No. None of that shit is maintained and hasn't been commonly used for like 15 years. Everyone just runs glamour.

>>110173767
SteamOS isn't special unless you have Valve hardware. Have working drivers for everything on your PC and you never have to touch the terminal in pretty much any distro.

>>110173790
I touch the terminal all the time to install shit in Ubuntu. Is there a new visual package manager I don't know about that doesn't suck finally?

>>110173767
Use CachyOS if you want rolling and are happy to deal with the implications (not as bad as I make it sound), use Fedora if you want a more stable experience that may occasionally run into issues of having outdated packages and require Flatpak in its ecosystem. Use Mint if it's a browser machine.

You can almost entirely avoid the terminal, but I would be lying to you if I said you'd never have to touch it. The good news is when you do touch it it'll be rare, and likely involve copy pasting 2-3 lines into it and that's it.

>>110148777
mint sucks ass and is for grandmas pc, even then I don't think I'd to do that to grandma. Mint is for beginners! is the most reddit tier advice on here.

>>110173807
No, but a lot of people are so buckbroken by CRUD UI that they'll take an awful GUI over the terminal. That's neither here nor there. You don't *need* the terminal for that. Synaptic exists.

>>110173813
I've narrowed it down to sticking with suggesting Ubuntu, or Fedora. The new EAC for Linux only works with Fedora, Debian, and Ubuntu.

I just now realized how much more peaceful my life has been this past year since I switched to Linux. I haven't gotten a single popup/ad/notification about any OS upgrade/AI bullshit/cloud storage/Office subscription/etc, and I realize I forgot what it feels like to just have an operating system that serves your needs and gets out of your way. It's frankly amazing.

>>110172673
Don't disable the second monitor on the lock screen/login screen. I did it and it caused a LOT of problems. I'll need to look later but I ended up finding something that merely sets the brightness to 1% while in the lock screen, but even then I don't use that. Both screens duplicated and on are just part and parcel of Arch stability with dual monitors.
>Backup
Clonezilla 100% is the way to go. The other backups are Timeshift and Rsync.

>>110173848
I doubt this matters to you, because it probably doesn't matter to most people, but using that shit will compromise your secure boot for as long as you use it. Unless Fedora and co. somehow bundle prebuilt initrds.

>>110173907

If you're going to list rsync, have you discovered borg?

I'd assume the anti-cheat isn't Kernel level right? Surely not?

File: file.png (145 KB, 723x833)

145 KB PNG

>>110174007
Yeah, the new EAC v2 that Epic is pushing out isn't Kernel level. If a company as big as Epic is adapting it for a game as big as Fortnite I assume other devs will adapt it; unlike the previous EAC for Linux which also wasn't kernel level and had no ways to stop tamperers; making it basically useless.

Am I missing something here as to why it'd fuck up secure boot?

>>110174019
Can you give me a QRD on borg?
(Also Arch - KDE Plasma Wayland here)

>>110174059
>>110174094
No, but it requires your kernel and bootloader to be signed by RedHat/Canonical/Etc. with no custom signing keys present in the EFI vars.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to pre-sign an initrd/initramfs as it is created by the system, for the system, and is often modulated by the user for their needs, only they can sign it. So your initramfs cannot be signed, nor can you use UKIs (because they bundle this user-built initramfs), so the boot chain will be inherently insecure forever.
Great for anti-cheat companies ensuring you haven't tampered with your kernel, terrible for users wanting secure boot to protect them from malicious boots. For example, I could create a tiny Linux distro that uses a bootloader and kernel signed by RedHat on a USB, boot it while your back is turned, this distro then looks for and mounts your EFI partition, analyses the initramfs, then modifies it to inject whatever it wants into the system (decryption key sniffer, or something deployed into the live system with root privileges), as if you never had secure boot at all.

>>110174112
Encrypted, deduplicated, incremental backup system that can backup remotely to anything with ssh. It's sort of a similar experience to btrfs snapshots, but encrypted and remote. You can restore specific backups, or even just mount/browse them for specific files.
It's based software.

>>110174168
I should actually point out that the initramfs cannot be signed generally anyway, as nothing in the chain verifies the signature, that's why we typically use UKIs to ensure the chain is secure instead.
The exception is Limine, which doesn't actually verify the signature either, but it stores its hash in its config file, then stores its config file's hash in the bootloader itself, which is signed, then panics if the any of the hashes in the config don't match.
Unfortunately, since again the initramfs is generated by the user, there's no way to know the hash of the config before the files hit the user's machine, so RedHat and co. can't sign the Limine bootloader itself with its config hash present inside it.

recommendations for a SpaceSniffer like GUI app for linux?
what's a good file explorer to use? the one in ubuntu sucks. I used kde plasma in the past, that one at least showed thumbnails correctly.

>>110173837
I'd install Arch for grandma and made it automatically run updates daily or weekly.
I've personally had that setup with KDE and it just worked, can't recall if I ever even had to manually fix a failing update.
t. eventually installed Gentoo
>>110173767
The joke is you likely WANT to touch the terminal, especially for installing software as the few "app stores" in the existence suck more or less.
(and what's more convenient for checking the available drive space than typing "df -h" to the terminal?)

>>110174271
Filelight or baobab.

>>110174281
Thanks!
these 'app stores' are so garbage, can't wait for AI to unfuck all this bullshit in linux. been using it for years, but it's just such a pain in the ass to find some of the most basic things.

>>110174178
Alright, I'm giving it a whirl.
Cheers

How the fuck do you undo knowing/using i3/emacs workflow/keybindings when on work pc? It's been incredibly frustrating using windows, even work ubuntu sucks because I cant install i3. I feel like I sabotaged myself because it sucks

>>110173767
Whatever you do, avoid Peppermint OS like the plague. I spent forever trying to install the fucking thing. I have to assume the devs are either malicious or incompeten. During installation if you're using a usb thumb drive, the lock screen eventually pops up from idling and there's just absolutely no way to get out of it if it happens to you and it pops up late just to fuck up your install when it's 90% done. You can go into the settings and disable it to stop it from happening, but it's bullshit that you even have to do that. Oh, and if you don't have an internet connection while installing, it just doesn't install grub, and it doesn't even tell you anything. You boot up and you're greeted with a blinking _ for eternity. Absolutely asinine, like they never even tested it.

>>110175149
Look into GlazeWM if you want to try out an i3-like experience on Windows.
