READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

>have nicotine+ instance running for over a year to share my media library

Bro I've been on slsk for too long, I currently use nicotine because I like the interface. I've never heard of this client. I just started fucking with docker, this is now on the growing to do list. Thanks for the heads up yo.

Honestly, not a fan of slskd solely because of the interface. Very user unfriendly imo. Every element is fuckhuge, every (or almost every) list/tree defaults to open, the way the browser tree works is so ass backwards and unintuitive it's like it was done on purpose, and basic qol features like going to a user profile or browsing all of their shares from a download search result doesn't exist. I'm sure there are other things too that I've forgotten. Honestly I am very not impressed. The only reason I was thinking of moving from nicotine is that it has no bidirectional clipboard being a gtk thingy inside of a docker container, otherwise I wouldn't have even bothered looking for a replacement.

Last few parts to my first server are ariving in a few days. I'm quite happy.
Uses: Hosting private game servers, VMs, and as a renderslave for my blender animations (running with my main desktop through a manager)

Any reason not to run Ubuntu LTS Desktop on it? There's trendy stuff like Pop!OS that I tried before but idk.
I'll need Nvidia drivers tho, for the rendering stuff.

I've already been using stalwart since forever. It just works. That said selfhosting email is dead and for a local relay stalwart is completely overkill.

thats the problem.
i only sell locally accompanied by my 6'6 300lbs friend wearing black hoodies at 9pm in the most obscure alleyways. no issues, no returns.

Nobody within 100 miles of me would've paid 1/4th of what I sold them for, though. That's the trade off.

I'm thinking about removing my ISP's router/modem because it serves no purpose. Any good cheap modems that take a fiber SFP module and have an RJ45 port?

The last few weeks have convinced me that ubuntu's security team are fucking batshit insane with their package versioning when it comes to CVEs however.

>bundled UI
Bro, this is a single fucking ansible playbook that leverages dpkg. Scratch that. It's a NET-SNMP extension to a bash script to whatever NOC service you use, maybe a nagios plugin at best, and they're trying to bundle it as a seperate application.
>>
>>110179407
its some ansible playbook + ui for jeets
>>
>>110175275
Use SemaphoreUI if you need a gui for ansible
>>
>>110174569
Yeah I'd be leaving it on the server and forgetting about it, I'd do my dloading on the other boxes on nicotine. Still worth investigating with those numbers. I'd put my entire media collection on it not just music and watch those numbers fly!
Docker is fucking nifty, I love the concept. WHY DIDN'T I SWITCH FUCKING YEARS AGO, FUCK YOU MS.

Guys, when do you think Librrary will be released? I'm so tired of using multiple instances of Sonarr (1080p and 4k) and Radarr (1080p, 4k and special editions).

What model is it? It sounds like it might be a combination PON ONT and router, in which case it might still be possible to replace it, but you wouldn't be able to use a regular fiber Ethernet SFP.
>>
>>110178327
Makes sense
Can't issue a refund if you fear for your life
>>
>>110180333
Would it not be possible to just plug in the ISP-provided SFP into a tplink modem box?
>>
>>110173831
gotem
>>
>>110180426
Probably not, unless your ISP actually gives you a fiber Ethernet (rather than PON) handoff, or their SFP module is an "ONT on a stick" that speaks Ethernet to the port it's plugged into, or by "tplink modem box" you mean one of TP-Link's ONTs, rather than one of their routers or switches that are equipped with Ethernet SFP ports.

Identifying exactly what hardware it is (model numbers, or even just some pictures) that you currently have from your ISP and want to replace would save a lot of guessing.
>>
>>110179937
>Guys, when do you think Librrary will be released?
Don't know, don't care.
>>
You can tell Mikrotik started using AI from how extensive routerOS changelogs are now
>>
>>110181541
yea but at least they somewhat actively fix their firmware and UI vs other more expensive vendors who only release a biannual security fix, maybe, if you're lucky
>>
>>110179706
Then it'll be fine. It almost even feels like it was designed just to be a file host more than a client due to its flagrant disregard for ease of use in favor of detailed (somewhat) history graphs and lists and such.
>>
thinking of buying a Lenovo ThinkCentre M70q to use as a router and caldav server. it only has one Ethernet port though. can I just buy a USB to Ethernet adaptor and plug a switch into it or will there be some unforseen consequences? also can it act as a WiFi router too if I get the one that has a WiFi card

Is there a guide for babby's first webspider/crawler especially after cloudflare ruined the internet? (Anubis is fine you just /wait/).
What I need is plaintext. News sites, papers, books, sharepoint, confluence. Search results as the output of searx without me needing to paypig $0.1/site for someone else to crawl.
>>
>>110184904
do you have an actual use for it

literally every consumer router that offered some kinda usb NAS feature that I've tried never worked out of the box for me. it's a marketing gimmick.

i finally found a use case for this thing /hsg/
just look at it
it has:
> 2 cores
> 2 threads
> runs at 1.58ghz (with a 2.16ghz boost)
> 1mb of cache
it's now attached to an usb printer and runs cups and a docker container with scanservjs
>>
>>110182366
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the switch you buy is 801q compatible, you just made router-on-a-stick and you'll be fine.
>>
>>110187897
it also lacks:
> aes new instructions
> vt-d
> turbo boost
> hyper threading
but it has a tdp of 4.3w
>>
I was vibe-coding a fully local youtube frontend which uses yt-dlp to curate recommendations and download videos, but maybe there's something else like this already? Does anyone know?
>>
>>110187897
I've got a little shitbox like that, was planning on just using it for torrents, or a router.
