i might have been mad about this a few years ago but fortunately they have been shittifying the site into an algorithmic slop farm, and so the use it formerly served for me (following a few small subs to aggregate research papers and scientific news) is almost certainly better served by another means by now. so this will be a great reason to finally stop using it out of habit.>>110197794i could probably actually just ask gemini for a quick digest of the above topics for my daily shitter reading instead of using reddit, good point

I'm honestly okay with this, they realized my loid scraper token method was too powerful and they had to pivot to mandating logins. I'm sure they will eventually get around to implementing heavy reads tracking on the APIs (documented or not) and make scraping even more difficult. If nothing else Reddit knows its worth and that is commendable, and speaks to Reddit's self respect. Maybe 4chan Community Support LLC will follow in big daddy Reddit's footsteps but I strongly suspect the "ephemeral" (kek) nature of 4gag will continue to be spat in the face of by third-party archivers such as https://desuarchive.org and https://4plebs.org - btw I rewrote Asagi in Go using Gemini 4 Argon let me know if you want it.

I don't see this mentioned enough so I want to mention it here to spread awareness. Shortly before reddit's IPO they allowed accounts to hide post history. It was several weeks before IPO they gave accounts the ability to turn off your ability to see the account's post histories.I don't know how I seem to be the only one that sees the obvious reason they did this. They effectively killed the ability to discern genuine accounts from bot accounts. The most obvious reason is they aren't just trying to deceive users, they successfully deceived the shareholders. Reddit plays an illusion game fueled by bots to convince the shareholders the site is alive and thriving when it's effectively dead. The account requirement is part of the deception, forcing people to register just to check a tech support thread to boost the artificial numbers. It's all cum and farts is all I'm saying. Cum .. and farts.
>>110199459The morbid part is this is happening right as many jurisdictions pass force-doxxing laws for retaining or creating social media accounts in the first place. This will especially nuke Reddit unless they liberalize VPN signups; they were and are dependent on signups being as simple as a burner e-mail.

What the fuck's the point in certain subreddits requiring posts/comments to be in English, only for that rule to be circumvented via auto-translation? >>110197306What spurred the migration from Digg to Reddit, and why aren't there large-scale trends of users migrating to other, non-pervasive, non-corpo (for those who care) platforms? These days, I get the impression that user bases simply "dissolve" instead of migrating elsewhere--take this shithole for example. The only recent counterexample I can think of is Tumbler to Twitter, and that was a mistake in retrospect. >>110202789All of that training data is either new (filled with thirdies, bots, and slop) or already scraped 100 times over. Reddit knows this, that's why they allowed people to hide their own posting history, so you can't just pull up their most recent few dozen comments and run them through Pangram or something. All it's valuable for is current trends/events, but the former and latter are better done by other platforms. If someone already doesn't know about Reddit, they probably won't go on it without lurking, especially if doing so means a face scan, other than perhaps word-of-mouth. Discord is better for this even among nerds, let alone the normie FB/IG/TikTok crowd. This will, slowly but surely, kill Reddit. Strangle it to death. If you have to doxx yourself and so on, there's no reason to not just use Discord other than Reddit's historical corpus. This is blind greed, because Spez thinks he's Instagram and he saw everyone else doing it. If you can't lurk Xitter, the only way to be intrigued enough to sign up is to either use a frontend, or look at enough screenshots. How often do people share Reddit screenshots, other than the occasional mockery of an anonymous confession post? Who will join Reddit (unless they do something like "verify with app store, register on app with no scan, delete app, keep account" with a high doxxing commitment? The bet is they're reaching saturation (if you pay attention to one of the charts of the Q3 report, US users are decreasing, 53m to 50m daily, and they massage the numbers by lumping the rest into "international", without any distinction for the third world (worthless as consumers) versus the non-US first world.Given the rash of forced-doxxing diddy laws, expect first-world (and even some third-world) signups to drop like a rock sooner or later. >>110200120Unfortunately it's also become the only place with relevant discussion for a lot of niche subjects. As a big example I'm a machinist/CNC programmer and it's the only place you can find a decent number of people who are actively working in the industry and up to date on things, anywhere else is full of boomers who retired 20+ years ago or home shop hobbyists.
>>110197288This.People already spammed how Reddit will die and how they will boycott it when they did the API changes, look how that went.Just retarded darkies screeching at eachother when nothing happens.
>>110203199Looks like I'll be keeping an eye on this, then. Thanks, anon. I have a reddit account but haven't used it since 2016 when my first comment was filtered by some idiot bot. No thanks. I'll just lurk around and share my thoughts where they're more valued.
>>110203755I have plenty of hobbies, I just don't outsource my opinion to an advertiser-subverted algorithm controlled consensus machine.

>>110197331Reddit is working on an AI powered auto mod bot to replace the one 99% of subs currently use. There's been a lot of bitching about it in the mod support/news subs
>>110203639Use a redlib host in a country that doesn't require it.
>>110203700Nigga it's an astroturfed advertizement platform at this point with all the subreddits infiltrated by marketing shills. Everything that made it honest or edgy is gone. It's all fake and gay now that it's sterilized to be corpo friendly. People make shit up just for upboats and karma

>>110203832I make or find a thread on 4chan. I ask friends and other people I've met who share my hobby. I research and compare specs objectively. Failing those, I just make a best guess and make it work. I don't need to hyper-optimize every choice about the things I do for fun, and certainly not against a supposed rubric that's prone to influence by sponsored interests and social/culture warrior types. You could say I still get the trickle-down effects of it through other people, but at least I'm the one that decides who among those to lend more credence to.
>>110198202Was thinking the same. Maybe make them solve a captcha to vote. Then you can use that as a captcha farm.
>>110203920I think the biggest value in sampling forums like Reddit is snuffing out faults or potential issues, which aren't apparent from specs or paid reviews alone. For the same reason I like reading Amazon's product reviews, even if I don't buy anything from there if I can help it. Funnily enough Amazon has also begun to A/B test hiding reviews unless logged in.
>>110197288Twitter also backtracked it or did not implement it because I have never had a twitter account and I can still view posts people link me, and they also still embed in discord usuallyIf reddit goes to the workflow of: you Google something, you click the result that links to reddit, it just shows a login prompt instead of the content you wanted to seeThat will severely lower real traffic
>>110203894Rip 420chan
>>110203973They backtracked that because Google and co. threatened to remove them from search results. So now you get a post and like three replies, and an instant login wall.Spez's post waffles similarly about linking/search hits, probably for similar reasons.

>>110204162I tried using r/hardwareswap for direct transactions instead of relying on the marketplace Jew as a middleman, and my experience was poor. I dunno how users regularly buy/sell on there without getting scammed or frustrated from all the bullshit present; all but, like, one or two replies were obvious scams from desperate ESLs using compromised accounts. One of them even tried adulterating a previously used image with AI lol. At least you can dispute it with PayPal in the event you get baited, but it's still a pain in the ass having to sort through all that time-wasting shit. I'd just like to avoid having to give ebay my dox and avoid all their fees.
Does this mean Google will stop using reddit threads as search results since you need to be logged in to use it?
>>110204493I think they still have the deal where gemini is trained on reddit of all things, so shit will mostly likely continue spitting out links and references from there
>>110203832>>110203920Lemme blogpost an anecdote that shows my perspective on the "consult Reddit" idea. I went to Japan with a longtime friend of mine. He's the type to go on Reddit and ask Claude about everything. We'd arrive at a town, split up sometimes and meet later. In Kyoto he wanted to hit the shrines so he checked Reddit and asked Claude to put together a plan and fucked off. Meanwhile I picked a direction and walked. I found a breakfast spot with yummy homemade cherry jam. A cashier at 7-11 taught me how to recharge my IC, and I learned I could withdraw cash without fees from my American debit card at the ATM. I found a school class writing and drawing pictures of the plants around the canal area, an older student in surprisingly good English told me about their assignment. I had enjoyed a bath in a ryokan a few days earlier, so I looked up and found a public bath downtown. I put aside my reservations and had an awesome bath with my nuts hanging out like the 30 salarymen around me. An older man showed me where to get a drink of water, and the area with other bath types like a big clay pot. The food court just outside served yam ice cream, and I learned the custom of having bottled milk and the automatic bottle washer return. In the evening my friend came back so late most places were closed and he couldn't find a place on tabelog. I suggested he join me at an udon place I saw a block from our stay. He was skeptical but tired from trekking shrines all day so we ate. The curry udon was great, and the owner had all sorts of niche punk band posters pinned up. He saw we were clearly American and his only customers so he put on some of his favorite American punk for us.Anyway my point is I didn't check Reddit or anywhere except google "baths near me" and I had one of my most memorable experiences of the entire trip. Meanwhile my friend's Reddit consensusmaxxed day blended all together and left him with sore feet for days. Thanks for reading my blog.

>>110204535Fake and gay.
>>110197265Does this mean this piece of shit will finally stop clogging up search engine results with its garbage useless threads?
>>110204532How will google crawl and source these answers if they are behind a login wall? I hope it ends up like instagram where none of the content is indexable and you never see it on google results.
>>110204535First, fake and gay. Second, it doesn't sound at all to me like he had a bad time. You sound afraid to go on a walk, and extremely self-centered (to the point you don't seem to care whatsoever about whether your friend even enjoyed himself enough to so much as ask. Likely he talked about it and you cared so little you don't even know what he said).

>>110204580>>110204636You don't have to believe me but I speak openly and honestly. I respect my friend and he had some good ideas too. But he straight up told me he was sick of shrines for the rest of the trip.Despite that we would stop by the smaller ones that randomly showed up on our routes, which honestly were more appealing. We got a lucky number 7 fortune from one, and a group of girls that was getting theirs helped read mine and congratulated us. You can have a nice time if you leave your little bubble, anons.
>>110204653Why don't they pay for Instagram then? Especially considering how huge it is.

Paying a subscription to google just to be able to access reddit links sounds like something that would only increase the use of alternative search engines.
