linux is often overkill for small projects. like your picture could be done with a microcontroller and no OS at all. obviously if you're super lazy you could use linux on a raspberry pi instead, or perhaps if you want to add fancy animations and things (if you're deal with 3d hardware you probably don't want to do that bare metal)
