I'm not talking about a proprietary one later made open source, im talking about one intended to be open source & community developed from the start. Potentially with a governing non profit organization administering it, like there is with other free software alternatives (linux, gnu, kde, etc.).
It could be made self hostable by default but with popular servers hosted by larger organizations. Every server could be compiled with their own set of feature patches. But all servers would share the same fundamental framework.

Imagine anyone could make a patch that adds a new dungeon to world of warcraft or a new skill to runescape. It would be quite cool i think, no?
>>
>>110207444
Why not make it yourself? Just plug in Claude and let it rip dood.
>>
>>110207444
What's the point when hacking it would be trivial.
>>
>>110207444
because open source is just communism. if you dont have big dick making the decisions and clamping down on hoes. it just turns to shit. thats why linux went to shit once linus stopped being very abrasive. freetards just got lucky for so long that he wasn't a push over until recently
>>
>>110207444 (checked)
No use case.
>>
>>110207449
im not looking to do it myself im more just wondering why a project like this never came to be when we have free alternatives for every other proprietary software
>>
>>110207451
online games validate things on the server side
there is nothing to hack unless you have access to the literal server machine
>>
crossfire
fusionfall via openfusion (we have pretty much all the assets now iirc)
stendhal
and a few others probably.

because mmos are the hardest games to make from scratch and all the rich people are basically selfish pedofiles that would rather shit in the mouth of some minor amongst their friends on a yacht while fleecing the goyim to make their bank acc number go up even more than pay a dozen million and spend time and passion on making literally anything good for the general dirty peasant pleb public, let alone making a video game.
>>
>>110207444
>Imagine anyone could make a patch that adds a new dungeon to world of warcraft
Pservers do this already
>>
>>110207512
yeah but with significantly more effort than it should take. Also they get taken down eventually due to legal
>>
>>110207444
The real interesting thing would be a proper mmorpg protocol with a reference implementation, even better if it was p2p
>governing non profit organization
Gay
>>110207503
There's nothing hard about it.
>>
>>110207516
AI reverse engineering is fixing it

Technically every WoW Pserver that is running 3.3.5a and versions below is open sourced now.
>>
Ryzom is open source and still running. There was another one but it is not as popular.
>>
i don't think anyone plays mmorpgs anymore, that was a millennial thing and millennials don't have time to play games anymore and zoomers are playing fortnite and roblox on their phones

Ah runescape, now THAT was a terrible fucking "game"!
>>
>>110207444
open source only works for utalitarian things with no creativity involved like operating systems
"governing non profit organizations" have no creativity

>>
>>110207931
FOSS doesn't imply a governance model, lots of projects are BDFL and that's what work best in my opinion anyway.
>>
>>110207444
MMOs are gay.
>>
>>110207950
>governing non profit organizations
is what he said
there's no reason for a game to be open source when it's developed by a closed team
>>
>>110207985
FOSS has nothing to do with "governing non profit organizations" OP is a faggot for wanting that garbage.
>>
>>110208004
If you were developing a game with a closed team why would you make it FOSS
>>
>>110208004
>governing non profit organizations
i didn't mean they would own the software anon. I'm just referring to a group of volunteers who would manage the PRs and such like there is with every other large FOSS software. Everyone would be free to fork at any time of course.
>>
>>110208022
>a group of volunteers
why would anyone competent work for free?
>>
>>110208010
I have no idea what you even mean, FOSS is just any software that respects the four user freedoms, it says nothing about how you manage its development, plenty of good FOSS sofware with closed development like SQLite.
>>110208022
>such like there is with every other large FOSS software
All those large FOSS software are garbage exactly because they have powertripping volunteers organized around a bureacratic framework (usually a non-profit organization as you said), all the good projects use a BDFL or a freeform community.
>>
>>110208029
idk why dont you go ahead and email literally any of the hundreds of FOSS maintainers in existence and ask them why they do it
>>
>>110208054
And why would you "respect the four user freedoms"
What do game developers gain from that
>>
>>110208056
I can't be bothered doing that, I'm not a freetard, but as someone with a developed skillset I'd never waste my time working for free unless I was getting something else out of it
>>
>>110208058
Generally FOSS developers are also users of their own software, it is very much on their own interest to respect their own freedoms.
>>
>>110208093
I can play the games I make without following any of RMS's retarded commandments
>>
>>110207444
>why
>open source
it would be infiltrated and munged. as with anything, to be allowed to exist there has to be a way for the grifter overlords to extract life force from you and yours
>>
>>110207444
I have a text based MMO (MUD) that's open sores.

https://github.com/mars-mud/MARS

Though I've been on a 2 year hiatus from it.

MULTI ADVENTURER ROLEPLAYING SYSTEM. Mostly based on D&D3.5 with some AD&D and 5.0 stuff mixed in. I have a private version with multi classing and a bunch of other shit. Anyone who wants to clone it and play with it and do some PRs is welcome

>I don't like decision biggest project has made, imma fork it
>i don't like decision forked project made, imma fork it again
yeah so you'll end up with like a hundred different snowflake versions (mostly abandoned) and the player base fractured and split between them.
>>
>>110207444
MMOs are a business model. It's just incompatible with open source.
>>
>>110207444
Because you're not an ideas guy. The ideas guy doesn't exist. You have no talent and no skill and no vision to make anything interesting.
>>
>>110207453
>because open source is just communism.
Define "communism".
