It's quietly an end of an era. The last cable tv and internet provider in the UK (Virgin Media) has decided to scrap their cable network and switch either to their competitor's fibre network or their venture company's (Nexfibre) fibre network. Leaving the now 40 year old cable infrastructure behind. The last stand for the cable network was announced as a 2 gigabit internet service while the fibre network has the potential for 8 and in the future 100 gigabit.

The internet infrastructure in the UK is collapsing fast. Despite an initial burst of "altnet" networks the lack of funding has led to consolidation and mergers with most people now back dependent on Openreach based networks along with the UK's censorship and id regimes. The internet is no longer the UK's strong point.
>>
2gigabit is unironically enough for anyone.
>>
don't blame the tech for ISP jewery/politics, glad to get rid of cable over fiber
>>
And now Virgin Media is doing mass layoffs. It looks like the company is being stripped down to just being a reseller of other fibre networks now and they will probably soon replace their TV service with third party streaming apps.

>UK
Just let it die at this point

Aside from your ignorance of both history and the industry (such as the fact VM has used both TT+OR for leased lines for over a decade) - ‘most people now back dependent on Openreach based networks’ has always been the case, because OR has a mandate to be the provider of last resort in every part of the country.

The benefit of the British model is reflected in (1) the ability of consumers to take out service with one of thirty or forty ISPs, with varying contract terms and levels of service. Ranging from ISPs like A&A who shit on the government continuously and provide support over IRC, to companies like Sky who view broadband as a means to get you to buy a Sky Sports subscription. Followed by (2), the relative ease of setting up an altnet, which is why despite consolidation, there are still over 200 of them.
I don’t even know why you would give a shit about virgin media. Their network is shit, the first two levels of support staff are in Pakistan, their core in Manchester throws a fucking tantrum every month. Even despite that, their broadband offerings are a fucking joke when you compare them to startups like Olilo that can hang off six different wholesale providers, go up to 5Gbit/s, and offer services like sponsoring an ASN + IPv6 PA block via RIPE.

i used to work for an ISP (Pipex) and it sounds like you were at least tangentially in that industry at some point

I'm more a Chad Media guy myself

This. You can thank faggot gamers for this. They always "need" more.
>>
>>110214349
>faggot gamers
you don't need particularly high bandwidth for most gayms though. people were playing online games when the average internet connection topped at 5mbps. it's only ping that matters
>>
>>110210857
good
fiber is better than coax in every way
>>
>>110210857
there was never any coax in my area. Supported it at a site in Swansea in one of my old jobs and it was fine.
I've only got 500 down and around 80 up so could easily be done on coax.
>>
>>110214385
That doesn't stop faggot gamers from demanding it. They need the 10 Gbps because they just do okay?
>>
I've been using 25mbit cable for 30 years. 1.5gbit is available but it's over $100 a month fuck that.
>>
>>110214385
Aren't game patch downloads like 250 GB these days
>>
>>110210857
Some based billionaire who doesn't exist because tech is full of posers should buy up this dark fiber network at a clearing-house price. They can then set up a new internet on it.
>>
>>110215873
Yes, but servers and CDNs will throttle downloads anyway.
>>
>>110210857
fibre is a cable too
>>
>>110215758
Lol seriously? With how much time the average channer spends on the internet, having fastest internet to your home is basically the cheapest form of entertainment. How much time have you waited for downloads dude?

the thing is a lot of these third parties are only available in the big cities like london, birmingham, manchester and the surrounding areas. virgin media has the best offerings in places where only the major isps operate. sky, bt, plusnet etc half of these still sell 100mb as a standard connection which should be illegal and are considerably more expensive than virgin if you want actually usable speeds
>>
>>110210876
I have 10 Gbit at home (same price as 1 Gbit here so why not) and I agree, 2 Gbit is the sweet spot right now. Helps that 2.5 Gbit NICs are the new default, switches are cheap too. And Wi-Fi is starting to reach those speeds for the tards on their phones.
