There's no risk in having an ability to accept connections. If you don't have a port (as in being "firewalled") you can only connect to peers that do have an open port. Like a phone that can only make calls but can't receive them.
>>
>>110220414
thanks for your reply
when i google risks of port forwarding it mentions exposure to internet scans and some other things
do you know anything about this issue and how likely it is to happen?
>>
>>110220452
Regarding the small IPv4 space: it's scanned continuously by various entities but they only do pings (which you don't reply anyway) and scan a handful of common ports. That means your obscure open port in the upper range wont even get noticed. And even if it did get noticed, so what? Now someone somewhere figures there's a BitTorrent peer at that IP. And if they wanted to pick up BitTorrent users they can do it by connecting to BitTorrent swarms anyway.
You typically see people picking random high ports such as 12345, 22222, 33333, 44444, 55555 or whatever.

>Does the quality of code matter these days?
Yes. Bad code + network exposure = service failures. Everything depends on online services now. People assume AI programming means idiots can be programmers, but in reality the cost of allowing idiots to work on software has never been higher. A lot of legacy software companies are going to fail, and taxpayers are going to end up assuming a lot of the costs in the form of """cyber-security""" regulation.

FHD doesn't have noticeable pixelation until you get pretty close or display size gets very large. Desirable screen size is a question of how much of your FoV it takes up from your preferred viewing location. rtings has a good article on this.

I'm not disparaging the size of the screen, but seriously why would you buy a new one to watch shitty broadcast quality encoded video when used ones do the same job and cost maybe 1/10th as much?

It's not impossible, it just takes effort and is also mostly thankless. You have to do it for internet clout with no compensation, but you also have to stay completely anonymous under threat of legal consequences which pushes away most of the usual attention seeking trannies. Oh and you also always run the risk of getting fucked if your opsec is bad.
So few people bother. He's not the only one, there was uhh skidrow I think until they got bored, then empress for a long while until he got bored, now this guy. Eventually he might get bored or give up, and someone else will probably decide it sounds fun and get on it too.

Way back when there was the entire "scene" of cracking groups and they were effectively competing with each other to show off their cracking skills. The difference is that denuvo is annoying and boring, the culture of c00l anonymous warez hackers is all but gone, and also law enforcement takes it a lot more seriously so it takes more effort to not get fucked.

It is deader and deader all the time. I wouldn't be surprised if 2 years from now there's no longer any human code review even.

I think the main thing the frontier models lack today is long-term context. I recently had to work on a large codebase I hadn't seen before, worked through a solution with an LLM, and honestly I had nothing to review in the LLM code because the main question I had was "does this fit the vision and context of the codebase, is this done according to the standards and practices in here?" which the only way to answer that is using human experience built over time. LLMs operate only in the present and discover their entire context fresh every time.
When working on a codebase I'm deeply familiar with, often an LLM will generate a good solution but I'll be able to provide some feedback like "actually doing it this way historically has made that thing more difficult so rewrite it doing it that way instead" for example, or "this interface will be annoying for users, because they might want to do that and that given our domain context" which are things the AI doesn't know, or didn't know to pay attention to.

There's attempts at "memory" but they all suck because it's still just a bunch of text files that the AI loads into its context, and then only if it can even find the right ones. I think if and when they solve memory in a way that lets you embed it directly in the model, human review will pretty much die. Running 10 parallel agents to auto review everything, each one with a full embedded history of the project's development and an intrinsic understanding of the userbase and usecases, will simply be more reliable than a human reading the code manually.

This is the exact argument Anthropic are giving in order to try to get open source competitors banned
The reality is that if everyone can run an AI model on their phones, everyone can also use an AI model to fix the security issues in their software. Right now things are pretty bad actually because AI software development is still slow, takes a lot of human review, and not every project is even using AI properly even for auditing. So one guy slopcoding a barely working exploit can still successfully exploit if it works just enough, and meanwhile boomer companies with slow moving processes just sit there while their upper management structure takes 6 months to go through the rounds of meetings until they agree to take some developers and put them on a team to run AI code audits or whatever.

But once AI gets more widespread, it'll be able to defend against AI. Especially if it's open-source / open-weight and everyone can use it.
>>
>>110218098

Same for optical ones but I guess dust could get in the path of the diode and also fuck it up. I've never heard of them having issues with sun though, unless you've got some kind of retarded RGBT+ transparent keycaps letting ambient light shine into the optical sensor
>>
>>110225759
Because by that point people will have long since adopted minimum quality standards for network software and hardware. It's really not that difficult to build reliable computers. We know the tools, they're just damned labor intensive. If anything they usually make computers unreliable on purpose because it creates more jobs.
>>
>>110227286
I had to research a lot to figure it out but apparently, the baby server I'm on has no minimum and gives out rewards based on "estimated hashrate" despite that being much less than my actual hashrate, so I'm making a small fraction of what I expected.
On the bright side, getting an SMS might only cost 50 cents so things might still work out as long as they work for verification.
>>
>>110227307
Thanks for replying, but there are still things beyond malicious software, like being able to create contagious human viruses the likes of which we've never seen before, or the technology evolving to the point where it'd be feasible for someone to make an "ASI" or "AGI" or whatever name they use to call it in their garage.
I'm a layman so maybe reaching that point is impossible due to some limitation and I'm completely off? I don't know, it just feels like every day there's a new thing to worry about. Sam and Dario don't seem to be hitting the breaks on their "world-ending" product in any meaningful way so maybe there's something they know that we don't and I'm just working myself up over nothing.
>>
>>110228074
Context and training costs are hard limits. We need several more human generations to work on this, and the second one won't be fast coming because millennials control all the research and will for another 30 years minimum. OAI and Anthropic just want regulatory capture because it's the easiest way for them to avoid being eaten by FAGMAN.
>>
>>110228074
Generally speaking the companies with massive datacenters will always have an advantage. If anything the main thing to worry about IMO is a techno-oligarchy where OpenAI and Anthropic run the world, own pretty much most of the computing capacity in the world, and everyone else can't buy anything except locked down goyslab devices with minimal computing capability and rent everything from the cloud including their intelligence. If someone can make ASI in their garage, you can bet the government and the big tech will have ASI that's 1,000,000 times as powerful. If your personal ASI can recursively self-improve and become super-intelligent in your backyard, you can bet the government AIs will be improving a million times faster. In fact the moment where self-improving ASI is possible and starts recursively accelerating, the gap between the frontier and the remaining models should expand exponentially, so if ASI IS in fact possible and we do reach it, then local AIs will immediately become irrelevant.

Things like developing bioweapons might be the only real risk, if we still have the ability to have our own compute, corporate ASI doesn't take over the world, but we get local AIs powerful enough to do that: it's not very easy to make an "anti-virus" even if you have a more powerful AI. But I do think the average lone actor terrorist is unlikely to just have the equipment, materials and precursors to craft any serious bioweapon, even with unlimited intelligence. I expect the main danger might come from well-funded groups such as rival nation states.

I'm trying to decide if I should use it for backing up my two external drives (4tb each, neither are full yet) or consolidating them down to one drive for daily use. I use one for pictures and music, and one for tv, movies, roms, and steam games.
Ideally I'd use a 10tb drive for backing up my ssds as well, but I don't really feel like paying $500+ for that.
>>
>>110228279
Check diskprices.com. Back before the components crisis, about $14/TB was a good deal, nowadays it looks to be more like $25/TB. (Filter out SAS drives unless you have SAS connectors.) Yours is $28/TB which is not terrible, but it does look like there's some drives which you can even buy new at that price, so it's not a steal or anything.

In general the things to look at are
>SMART readouts, make sure there's no issues but also check e.g. total power-on hours to get an idea of its wear
>cross-reference with the Seagate official table of which drives are SMR, to make sure it's not
>do you even need to hoard 8tb of data for anything or is it a "just in case lol" impulse buy

SMR, for reference, is cheaper but makes overwriting data VERY slow. It's acceptable for backups or long-term storage where your data will pretty much be write-once, but it's always worth less than a proper CMR one.

If you do want the drive for backups or whatever, you can try asking your friend for a cheaper price. That or grab one of the deals from diskprices
>>

These are things you can ask an LLM if you want an easy answer.
>i don't think it has smr
I think you're right, so it's not bad.

>the drive on amazon which is going for $440
This particular drive is not any more or less amazing than most others, so again use diskprices as a reference rather than a listing for this specific model. Also compare used/refurb listings, since your friend is obviously not giving you a new drive either. For example apparently there's a new 6TB for $164 HGST drive which is a bit cheaper per TB - I can't see the actual prices on amazon.com because it refuses to show non-regional pricing, but click through to see the general prices. In fact I also see a used seagate ironwolf 8TB apparently going for $227.

tl;dr I think your friend's price is not a steal at all, but it's also pretty reasonable so not exactly a bad choice either. No reason to impulse buy, but if you want a new drive and wanna help out a friend rather than buying from some random amazon seller then sure go for it.

Better cooling. Smaller form factor for sticking on a shelf somewhere. Often more storage/expansion options or general upgradability.
It's not something you buy to plug a screen into, it's something you buy as a tiny server to run 24/7. You can run servers on laptops too but the screen makes them really wide and running with the lid closed 24/7 will often make them hot, and their cooling is often just shit in general and designed to maybe boost for half a minute and then throttle heavily rather than sustaining a workload.

Is Sam Altman right?
>>
>>110229130
Sam Altman is an intelligent person (you don't get to where he is by being a retard) but his job is to sell his own company to investors etc., so what he says is usually geared more towards what will provide the most profit rather than what's the actual truth.
>>
>>110222259
DOSBox-X is the easiest, it runs Windows 3.1 well with sound and mouse working. 86Box if you want accurate period hardware. VirtualBox works but you'll be hunting for video and sound drivers. Old hardware only if you want the real thing.
>>
>>110229174
Daily reminder that Sam Altman is a vicious sadist who raped his own little sister to watch her scream. In a competently administrated world he wouldn't be allowed to run a McDonalds. The less influence he has in your life, the better. If we ever wind up in an "I Have No Mouth" situation, it's going to be because of some giga-twisted incentive scheme Sam dreamed up to train AI faster.

>It's not something you buy to plug a screen into, it's something you buy as a tiny server to run 24/7
wat
they literally come with multiple displayports and regular cpus not server cpus like xeons
i think the fact that they're recycled more is why you can get a newer computer in a tinypc form cheaper
>>
>>110229826
Yeah they come with displayports for normies. I think offices love those for some reason. I guess you can use one as a home theatre PC, fit it under your TV (while a laptop would be awkward)? But in general there's no reason to use them that way.
>and regular cpus not server cpus like xeons
The only thing that makes xeons and epycs special is that they're huge. For a small, cheap, low-power home server you don't need a huge CPU; but "small server CPUs" don't exist, a xeon but smaller is just a regular CPU then. And so the regular CPUs in mini-pcs are perfectly fine.
>>
>>110229871
you can use anything for homeservers that doesn't mean they're servers they are regular computers
>>
>>110229897
A regular computer that is serving stuff is a server. An old laptop can be a server. But I explained how an old laptop is a bit worse at being a server, due to the annoying shape and the poor cooling. A mini-PC makes for a better server.

Just because it's not a rackmount shape in a datacenter doesn't mean it's not a server.

How the hell do I make a NEW BLANK gmail account with a CHOSEN email name on any device? Or am I just screwed by something in the backend?
>On android phone with normal phone number with working data on
>Go to login to google account
>"Create account"
>Put in phone number
>"Verify"
>Get SMS
>Put in numbers
>"Type an email adress" (an EXISTING one)
>Don't have any
>Type in desired gmail name just in case
>"Doesn't exist, try again"
>Make one up to see what happens
>"Verify the email with the numbers we sent to it"
>Obviously can't do that
>Can't leave it blank
>Only other option: Get text messages as notifications
>Ok
>Your new gmail adress is now g.co/903u5109u51j1o3ij
>Getting notifications is completely fucked regardless
Done this dozens of times for other people, did google change something other than requiring a phone number?
>>
>>110229816
Usual surface level answers:
1. Test typing HTTP instead of HTTPS in the URL for the website
2. Clear cache and cookies
3. Disable addons
4. Check firewalls, especially third party from anti virus, disable them
5. Search for "No proxy" in FF settings, should be set to.. no proxy.
6. Reinstall FF completely
7. Try Edge if you're on Windows for the heck of it

Never underestimate restarting the device.
What are you even using?

Weirdly enough, the battery in my phone stopped reporting correct values and is stuck at 15% charge. The battery level doesn't change no matter what I do. Think I can squeeze a little bit more from this lil' fella before dumping it?

firefox or brave?
>>
>>110232688
I've had that happen before, and it was almost always down to cold temperatures. If that's the case then there's nothing you can really do besides warm it up. I used to keep my phone on my router where it was warmer in the winter. I'd just let the battery run dead then go from there.
>>
>>110232713
Probably not an issue correlated with low temperature with me living in a warmer climate. Maybe it was because of the warmer temperature? Could be but I mostly stay indoors where the temperatures are room level
>>
>>110232766
Let the battery run dry regardless to let your phone know where 0% is desu.

Aint ""0%"" a fixed cut off voltage? And where does the percentage even come from? Isn't the device only aware of voltage?
(I have this 4 year old electric moped and I hate the percentage display, why can't we have voltage for all battery powered devices? The small lithium ion battery is already showing marks of wear and percentages are seemingly a bit more out there compared to when the bike was brand new)
>>
>>110232972
Voltage readings depends on load and even the fanciest of algorithms have some margin of error, the only way to get a perfect reading is to unplug the battery from the system before reading.
>>
>>110232972
Batteries also have internal resistance which changes as the battery ages, and depending on load and environmental factors. The charge controller has to look at the battery voltage, which like other Anon said is never a perfect read because it's under load, and guesstimate about where real energy capacity is at based on the system's max energy draw and what it thinks the battery's internal resistance is at the moment. This is why it's good to let devices run down until they shut off sometimes if their charge indicator gets erratic. Though in your case it's probably thermal or the battery is about to die.

Why does SVT-AV1 (I don't know whether it's the encoder or AV1 itself) blur so much? Even with some experimentation with various parameters, it still seems so blurry. I know older encoders like x264 were notoriously prone to macroblocking and would frequently waste energy on high frequency information like grain and other noise, but final encodes still look much better to me because of how much sharper they are, even if that's at the cost of some errors here and there. Is AV1 just blurry or what?

CPU should be good quality, GPU is bad quality but more efficient as it doesn't use the CPU.

Is there a danger to capping your GPU's max power to 90% ? I presume not, but I wanted to be sure. I wanted to use it to render Blender stuff for hours at a time, but I don't want it going supernova. I just don't know if capping it will cause issues in the long run.

libsvtav1, it runs on the cpu
>>
Why the fuck did they stop making streaming dongles?
>>
>>110237548
No but it usually makes it less efficient. Just use your hardware. Modern GPUs don't cook themselves unless they made a really bad assembly error at the factory, and you want to find that while it's in warranty.

>>
>>110238911
If anything it'll be more efficient, you will only lose a couple percent fps in benchmarks while reducing the power by a decent amount. You can get fan speeds quite low by combining it with an undervolt
>>
>>110239015
>Are there black Friday deals on used laptops on ebay?
eBay has run deals where you can apply a coupon to a purchase with a set percentage off up to a set dollar value. Not sure if it's something they do for BF.
But if you mean door buster deals, it's possible some of those refurb sellers will run some sales to clear stock.

Except you're still keeping the entire system in high power state for longer so not really. Reference boards are usually tuned for optimum unit compute / W, especially at the higher end. Undervolting is legit free efficiency if you can get it though.

I figure if I cap the GPU at 90% (meaning it won't go higher than 90% power), it'd stay cooler. I mean it already runs relatively cool when rendering because of the case it's in, but I figured a bit of extra caution couldn't hurt.
>>
>>110240150
Temperature isn't a reliability concern for those things unless you have a FET not making contact with gap filler or something like that. Voltage over time is what kills the chip, but that takes 20 years or more. Most likely your shitbox PSU kills it, the fans die and you can't be bothered to replace them, or it sags itself to death.
>>
>>110240126
In software you could do it with equalizer apo on windows, and pipewire on linux. You can probably set a keybind too somehow.

But, what is this name?
>>
>>110240950
I think this is the css theme, but I'm not sure how you would use it, it's the whole theme including some generic stuff. https://s.4cdn.org/css/spooky.715.css
The 23 different skeletons are in this folder: https://s.4cdn.org/image/skeletons/23.gif
You would need a userscript to add the skeleton img element in the body element tho
>>
>>110241217
I guess you could use a uritransform to replace another theme like so:
||s.4cdn.org/css/tomorrow.716.css$uritransform=/tomorrow\.[0-9]{3}\.css/spooky.715.css/

in this case, the tomorrow theme

I also made this userscript to add the skeleton back:
// ==UserScript==
// @name Get fourchan skeletons back
// @namespace http://tampermonkey.net/
// @version 2026-11-04
// @description try to take over the world!

const maxFloored = Math.floor(max);
return Math.floor(Math.random() * (maxFloored - minCeiled + 1) + minCeiled); // The maximum is inclusive and the minimum is inclusive
}

//styles for if you aren't using the spooky css theme
GM_addStyle(`
