Anyone who thinks AI is the future should try following its instructions to update a Gentoo installation that's a few months old, with multiple conflicts and circular dependencies.
>>110228562follow instructions? how 2022. these days we're giving claude code unfettered root access to everything and just letting it handle it
>>110228573this
>>110228562Software will be sold as so easy to use, even your stupid ai can't manage to fuck it up. This will happen in the future.
>>110228562>Can a robot fix a broken Gentoo install?Can (You)?
>>110228562It can help if you give it enough context but yes eventually it will give you an information from a reddit reply that was 11 years ago that can't help you with your current problem and it will apologize and say you are right.
>>110229518Yes obviously
>>110229518Just uninstall loonix and install a OS that is not tailor made for virgin losers.
>>110232303Nice try Salty Nutella SAAR but I'm not giving you $200 and all of my data to slurp up.
>>110229518written like a true pleb that doesnt use AI and hasnt had their clanker apologize a dozen times these week already
>>110228562>>110229518Gentoo had no such problems until unironic trannies took over circa 2012-2013. It has been impossible to update if you didn't keep up every month at the latest ever since.
>>110233838I've run in to issues if I went a couple of WEEKS without updating. I've had to update every few days. It's actually really fucking annoying.
>>110228562I followed AI's instructions to coom 3 times in 1 day and now my PP hurts.
funny you should say that, because i just recently did exactly that. i'd been putting off doing a complete world update for months due to errors i couldn't figure out (portage output can be really hard to understand). i finally recently gave some of the output to an llm and it helped me figure out what exactly portage was saying
>>110233849It's why I moved away from it. Too bad, gentoo really was the best distro by far until then. At least with BINHOST because it's true some codebases are a pain to compile.
>>110233838>>110233849thinking about switching away for this reason, but I dunno what else I'd go for
>>110235963I'm using mx-linux, some people meme about slackware but I don't like that their solution is "just install all the software, this way you won't have dependency issues XD".There's also exherbos but I found it to be too buggy for my taste and never used it for too long.I'm not satisfied with any option. At this point I'd take something like freebsd or netbsd, but I need some pretty advance OS features it turns out.
>>110235963There are literally thousands of non tranny infested distros to pick that aren't Gentoo. Just back your shit up and switch to a distro that isn't a 2 decades old /g/ meme.
>>110236061Many people tried gentoo because of the meme, but the fact is it was a fantastic distro with many very unique advantages. This is what made us stick with it for so long even after the tranny infestation. There is nothing like it out there.>>110235963Oh, beside exherbo there's also funtoo. But I don't know where it's at these days and I thought it was too close to gentoo thus inheriting the same issues?
>>110233838The only time I ever have problems is when PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET advances too far because all the gentoo tooling is written in python so everything fucking breaks including portage.Total Pythonista Death.
>>110233838>>110233849I literally have a Gentoo system that went 3 months without being touched, I was worried I might have problems updating it because of shit I'd heard from other people. But it actually updated just fine. The only thing I had to do was update Portage before any other packages, but the system makes it extremely clear that you're supposed to do that. Before Gentoo I was using Arch which also had a reputation for breaking, although I never experienced any problems with it. I think some people just have a knack for breaking things, and like most idiots they tend to blame other people rather than themselves. Also, at a certain point, why ARE you going a month without updating? If it's some spare computer or server that only gets touched once in a while, you should be using Debian or something. That's exactly why it's a server distro.
>>110236632Found the astroturfing tranny damage control team lead
>>110228562OP, as someone who's been using Gentoo for a few years, here is some advice.Package conflicts, generally speaking, can be ignored. It just means a particular package isn't going to be updated right now. Usually if you wait a week or so you'll find the problem will have resolved itself. If I found out that I had a very persistent package conflict that didn't go away on its own, maybe I'd investigate and sort it out, but in my 3 years I've never had to do that.On the rare cases I get circular dependencies, Portage tells me exactly what to do to fix it, and every time I've tried it it always works. Not sure what I'd do if the recommended solution didn't work, but again, I'd probably just ignore it and it would go away on its own.Gentoo is, in some sense, the most Linux-like distribution. It doesn't dumb itself down for users, it chooses to display all the information. Some people can't really handle that. As a rule of thumb, as long as Portage still allows you to do a @world update, you don't really need to worry about any minor issues.

>>110236719ywnbaw troon
>>110233838>>110233849>>110235963Arch doesn't have this problem, I once didn't update my Arch machine for 6 months, did a pacman -Syu and everything worked.
>>110236767is it the same for funtoo?
>>110236780i've updated a 2 year old gentoo installation before. it did take a while, but mainly because i had to recompile basically everything
>>110236719>>>/lgbt/
>>110236767No, he wasn't right. I am >>110236632 >>110236674 and I hate trannies as much as the next guy. But some people are legitimately suffering from tranny derangement syndrome and bring it up in completely irrelevant contexts. When I'm making a post saying that I've gone 3 months without updating Gentoo and didn't have any problems, it is not an appropriate response to just randomly call me a tranny.
>>110236780Arch has a different problem: everything still breaks if you don't update every week but instead wait a month to update. Last time I tried it was sddm shitting the bed, then krashde not even starting, then xfce. So I said fuck it forever (again). And beside, I'm not using poetteringware or gayland.
>>110236807No idea.
>>110236838>sddm>kde>xfceLmao, sometimes I forget that there are still some retards out there using Linux desktop environments. Everyone with a brain switched to tiling WMs years ago. No wonder you're having trouble.
>>110236864>it works if you're a zoomer whose main device is an iphone and the computer is just here to look pretty while taking pics for tiktok
>>110236864I used to be a tryhard like this until I got sick and tired of how much faster it is to just click on stuff instead of being le heckin haxx0r and having to waste time typing out commands for things that take 1 second of mouse use to do
>>110236886Lmao, holy cringe. Spoken like somebody who's never used a tiling WM.It's the exact opposite. On a tiling WM you use a simple keyboard command to change window, it is fast and instant. Once you get used to tiling WMs, using normal desktop environments feels like using your computer in slow motion. You have to drag your mouse all the way down to the bottom of the screen just to change window.
>>110236906>trooningWMno thanks
>tiling wmemeyou know you can set shortcuts on a floating wm too right
