>Bought smarwatch>Checked before what apps were available>Lots of things were supported that would make life a lot easier not having to take my phone out of my pocket>Turns out after I got it that half of them were abandoned for 4 years already because no one has a smartwatchI feel this is the issue with these things. They should've probably designed some kind of compatibility layer that allowed normal android apps to work on it at least in diminished capacity.
might still buy the pebble time 2
>>110233595They don't have much of a niche other than tracking your exercise for you, and playing music to your Bluetooth headphonesA few built in apps are pretty useful too, I guess, things like setting timers is kinda nice, they are really only worthwhile if you don't want to carry your phone but want the convenience of a phone for certain things
>>110233813Pretty much this. There are some interesting apps on them and some good uses, but it's one of those things where you already knew what you wanted out of it before you got it.
I would have a use case for very specific apps, so most i would write myself
>>110233595I started reusing mine recently, with AI you don't need any app developers. Stuff I made with AI in the last couple weeks>remote for tv>"ask chatgpt" app>a better timer app>something to control my Ikea light>a tile with shortcuts to common apps I useMobile developers are definitely cooked
>smartwatchLmaoImagine having to recharge your watch like a cuckUse solar powered casio like a real man
>>110233595I just use a cheap fitness bandIt gives me a timer, sleep and step tracking, a remote camera shutter and vibration on phone calls with a 10 day battery life, which is enough for me
>>110233691Pebble Time 2 looks interesting, e-Ink display makes perfect sense for watches and I'm surprised most manufacturers settle for OLED instead. But I don't want to pay 225$ for watches so I'll keep looking for used ones. Currently many faggots sell used Pebble Time 2 for even higher price than a new one, thinking they deserve a provision for handling import process or something.
>>110234238That's a good idea actually, I don't have the time to make this stuff myself but just vibe coding it could easily be an answer.>>110233813The things I was looking forward for was>The health bull, but it turns out many of the censors don't constantly measure in the background but actually require you to uncomfortavle stand still for 15 seconds.>Answering the phone from the thing, turns out to not be that ergonomic holding a watch in front of your face>Contactless payment without taking something out of your pocket, works like a charm>Doing Anki reviews on it, the software for that is abandoned>Easy shopping at my grocery store, turns out their support for their Wear OS app is abandoned too because not enough people were using it>Control music player, kind of meh because seeking has no smooth seeking so you're just left with holding down a button for too long to seek to a specific part and you can only control the current song, not actually search for an artist and play it without dedicated app support>Notification reading without taking the app out of my phone, works like a charm>Reading my shopping list without taking my phone out of my pocket, works like charmSo yeah, lots of abandoned stuff and it's all kind of meh
Main usecase I can think of for smartwatch is 2FA
>>110234434Oh yeah that too. Having to pick your pohone out of your pocket when you';re sitting on a chair is a pain. And they typically don't support that either. Would love to just get a notification on my phone when I make a painment from the computer, enter the gesture and that's it, instead of>Take phone from pocket>Scan bloody q.r. code>fingerpint>Now you can muh pay
>>110234238I've been looking into this myself, I had the same idea that now that I can pretty much vibecode any app i want for a smartwatch, then it'd be much more useful. After a lot of searching I figured amazfit might be best, wear os would likely be good too, but the battery life. No point in getting one if it gets so annoying to charge it. What do you have?
>>110234312lmaoi wish more smartwatches would use a Cortex-M/equivalent core and e-ink displayit just doesn't make sense to have a watch if you need to charge it every other dayNFC, wireless charging, and GPS would have been nice in the Pebble though
Smartwatches have zero usecase. All you're doing is strapping another tracking device to your body. If you need a watch get a regular ass watch. If you need a step counter there are plenty of pedometers out there that don't send your health data to jews.
>>110234897Xiaomi bands used to have NFC, but they scrapped it in global models probably so they don't have to deal with NFC certification. Also mind that every feature like NFC or GPS consume power and takes up space that could be used for battery or not at all to make the watch lighter. Sometimes less is more. I'm already not sure about Pebble Time 2 since it's two times heavier than my Xiaomi band and possibly couldn't be comfortable to wear.
>>110234911There are open-source apps like Gadgetbridge that give you full control over what your smartwatch does. What could smartwatch even do without internet connection?
>>110234758Fossil Gen 6, a very old watchI will use it for a while and if it continues to feel useful then I will upgrade Another app I made, I can take notes by simply talking. I have this watch tiles for shortcuts that I can quickly access and pressing a button and talking takes a note. It goes to my phone which transcribes it and uses LLM to fix it a bit and then syncs notes between my phone and watch
>>110234287"protection" yeah... all that watch protects is your virginity.
>>110233595I mainly use mine to confirm 2FA stuff, set timers, check the weather, screen calls, unlock my phone/computer, act as a remote for my tv, and play/control music when I’m skateboarding. Sometimes I put hiking trail maps on it.
>>110233595>fitness and sleep tracker>can pay with it>can set a countdowngood enough for me
>>110235866How much 2fa stuff actually supports it? The issue is lack for support for me.
>>110233595literally use ai to vibe code apps idiot
>>110233595>because no one has a smartwatchI think a lot of people have them, they just don't use them for apps much. similar to smart tv's. anyway claude exists write your own shit.
>>110239234I feel that if it were actually that simple and one could just make an anki app with it that actually works that it would've existed already to be honest. There has to be some catch.
>>110239308The reason a lot of obvious apps/features don't exist is because the time required to program them wasn't worth the relatively small demand. Now that the time required to make them is nil you have the chance to do it. Anki is a great category that is ripe for improvement but never got it because no one could fund it. Go make yourself an Anki smart watch app, I think it's a good idea. If you can be assed to refine it and make it good and reliable share it with others.
>>110239308Oh, and I've never made a smartwatch app but I doubt Claude has trouble there if it's android whatever. Anki is tiny and you can probably get a working v.1 in thirty minutes.
>>110233595>be me>go to thrift>find mi4 watch for $5>works great and track everything i needBest part is battery lasts 3weeks
>>110239377that one's already made though
i've been wearing smartwatches for over a decade. i've never used a smartwatch app aside from inbuilt stuff like the music player, timers etc. nobody does
>>110239369I'm saying they still don't exist even though they supposedly can just be vibe-coded and basically I don't believe it's actually that easy since I work as a programmer and we use this tech a lot to assist us, research things, and write boilerplate where it works fine but even with assistance I ask it like "How would you do ... with this library ..." and then it comes with an example that makes me understand the library, but 30% of the time it still contains a clear logic error in it or an edge-case it overlooks so I really don't believe it can actually create a working application without major logic errors at this point.
>>110240215nigga u can log into claude.ai and say "Make me an Anki-app for my whatever-brand smartphone" and it'll do it.
>>110240378So you say, but if it were really that easy it would be done already by many different people and given how many logic errors I see in very elementary functions alone I sincerely doubt it can actually do this.
>>110240588you WILL sign up and tell your thoughts to the butthole.
>>110240588you are a trolling idiot obviously but here you go: >>110239576
>>110233595I'm thinking of getting a used one for the heart rate and to track my sleep in pokemon sleep. Seems like I could spend $100 to get a nice but older model.
