STOP USING DECADE+ OLD THINKPADS IN 2026!

If you are STILL using a Thinkpad T420/T430/X220/X230 or anything from that era, than WTF are you doing?

The ABSOLUTE OLDEST Thinkpad that is acceptable in 2026 is a Thinkpad T14 gen2 or anything with at least an 11th gen Intel CPU.

If you are still using a T420... just let it fucking go already. It's a useless hunk of plastic now.

I bought this Thinkpad t440p in 2022. It has been the best computer I've ever owned and I've owned much more powerful computers. Through thick and thin, the hardest times of my life, it has been with me. It really is my best friend.

>not canoeboot
>>
>>110234858
you can literally get a 11th gen intel thinkpad for 200 dollars that is better in every way.
>>
>>110234860
I've reversed the microcode (not completely, obviously) in k3

it's fine, it's literally just fixes for the haswelll architecture. there is no backdoor in the intel microcode and the intel microcode literally just makes the platform more secure. the management engine, yeah it is stupid, and I'm glad it's destroyed on my bios chip lmao

I did use to use canoeboot, actually. I've gone between the 2 and at one point even had skulls on this laptop. I learned a lot about coreboot with it. Still have more to learn with it probably, but I just don't see anything else bios wise it needs beyond the EC. I would have to get a JTAG and actually probably solder it to the EC to work on such a thing but AI could probably liberate it.
>>
>>110234873
i can keep using this one for $0
>>
>>110234873
Have you considered that not everyone feels the urgency for shiny new shit that you do? Have you considered that this is a really hard time for basically everyone right now economically and maybe spending $200 on a thinkpad would be unwise? The entire premise of the OP is tone deaf.
>>
>>110234876
>0$
not including the cost to upgrade the laptop in the first place, while the 11th gen thinkpad will work ootb
>>
>>110234873
>that is better in every way.
No sturdy metal frame. We have gone from a sturdy tank that falls down a flight of stairs and comes out with only some scrapes on the outside, to just another flimsy creakbook.
>>
>>110234881
just saying that if you're getting a thinkpad there's no reason to go for a decade+ model in $currentyear
>>
>>110234889
new thinkpads have magnesium for the bottom cover so that's a non issue
>>
>>110234891
There are actually lots of reasons;
-The parts are cheaper
-They're easier to work on
-They're quality computers
-The parts are plentiful, there is no shortage, entire pallets of these things exist all over America, lenovo built them for the entire country
-They are supported by coreboot and libreboot which matter for privacy, especially to journalists and especially right now

So many other reasons. Lots of valid reasons to buy an old thinkpad someone else had than to rush and prove your loyalty to the 11th generation of thinkpads specifically for some unknown reason
>>
I use a T480 daily and it's fine. I used an X220 for years until the battery connection became faulty and turned off half the time I picked it up. The bigger problem is honestly that they're old and things like the hinges and plastics break rather than performance. On my X220 the hinges were loose, one of the battery latches was busted, etc.
I do actually want a T420/T430 since I kind of want a laptop with a DVD drive so I could buy DVDs. Also I like the way the old ones look.
>>
>>110234898
Part of what made the old ones so sturdy was that it's the frame inside it, not just the shell.
>>
>>110234771
kinda not really. good luck getting HD H.264 acceleration working on that particular chipset on linux specifically (it was never that well supported). it's not necessary however, the cpu is more than powerful enough on its' own
>>
>>110234900
>The parts are cheaper
you're looking at spendinf 100$ minimal to make old thinkpads usable
>They're easier to work on
nope on newer think all you have to do is take off the back cover and you upgrade/repair what ever you want, while on old thinkpads you need to do a full system disassembly just to access the cpu
>They're quality computers
and so are new ones
>The parts are plentiful, there is no shortage, entire pallets of these things exist all over America, lenovo built them for the entire country
see my first point
>They are supported by coreboot and libreboot which matter for privacy, especially to journalists and especially right now
ok i'll give you that one but t480 also supports libreboot and is modern by comparison
>>
>>110234771
>>110234910
(and yes, i have tried. researching it you'll find it can do it with the windows driver, but that nobody really finished it for linux. this chipset predates decent intel video support in linux)

>STOP USING DECADE+ OLD THINKPADS IN 2026!
If your happy with what you have and enjoy your own computers speeds what's stopping someone from running the same PC offline for decades? A decade is usually the limit for most business models these days, but older machines are far more repairable than new ones. If you can save a laptop from the landfill, play retro videa, make FM chiptune and write documents then I say have fun.

>>110234755
>can you play back 1080p jewtube
What's stopping you from just not using the internet on an older model? I've seen devices from the 1990's run with rapid loading times offline. Some people have a hobby machine and a daily driver. If your dead set on using the internet, you easily keep up on a second machine and use the offline one as an air gapped work or DOS gaming machine.
